View Full Version : A lunch break is two hours at minimum

There were very good reasons why Henri kept his class schedule clean around midday, or at least one very good reason. Lunch. It afforded him time to walk home and make his own midday meals.

Breakfast was usually as simple as some pastry, a coffee, perhaps some fresh fruit or even crepes au fromage et jambon. Often hastily taken over the newspaper or a book and with a steady diet of cigarettes. That was a thirty minute affair.

Dinner was, unless the occasion demanded, a simple dish or two with a potent apertif to wash down the day, and was also accompanied by a steady diet of cigarettes. These days Henri slept earlier.

Lunch, however, was had when the day was firmly in one's grasp. Ideas were fresh, the sun was bright, and taking time to do it justice meant that the rest of your day, in turn, stood to benefit from you being able to do it justice. It was also, by contrast, a meal he never took alone if it could be helped. Wine may be served, but the discussion was to be the apertif. Sometimes students were invited under the auspices of "office hours". Sometimes faculty came to his home. It was always understood that, while his lunch break was famously long, it was also usually productive in some respect.

The run-up to lunch was no different. Henri stood in his kitchen, cigarette tight between his lips as he ran a bread knife through a re-warmed baguette in small diagonal cuts. His guest would soon be arriving, and she was a familiar one. Familiar enough that he'd even trusted her to go by the market and pick up a few things before stopping by.

Her trip to the market had been particularly successful, and Evelyn smiled to herself as she made the return trip to Henri's home. The two small bags she carried weren't too heavy, and her step was even and measured. It had been a long time since she'd shared a meal with her old friend, and it would be such a refreshing experience to once more relive what she knew to be a thoroughly enjoyable daily routine.

From what she could remember, Henri had been a wonderful cook; of course he was French, so perhaps that had something to do with it. Though, it was also entirely possible that he simply took pleasure from the act of preparing food, with nationality having no say in the matter. Whatever the case, Evelyn knew that whatever meal they were to share this day would be delightful.

Stopping at his door, she lifted a hand, finger depressing the door chime. They had grown close once more since her return, spending hours in conversation and introspection, but there was still a reservation she held. Whether he wished her to simply stroll in through the door or not, this was his home. His sanctuary.

And again she smiled, looking to the side as she waited, her thoughts taking her back to the countless hours they spent in Paris, sitting for hours on end at any cafe they happened upon. They were good memories.

From his vantage through the porthole window in the kitchen, he could see her silhouette darkening the window in the door.

"The door is not locked Evelyn, come in!"

He let his voice raise to reach her so he would not be interrupted in his task. Pausing momentarily to tap his cigarette against a counter-side ashtray, he turned to the oven to check on the heavy ceramic pot left idle in a braise. The coq au vin was lazily bubbling inside, the low temperature wine sauce slowly tenderizing the quartered rooster he'd bought at discount from the uptown Mexican carniceria a day prior and put in the oven before leaving for work this morning.

Henri turned to see a familiar face in his kitchen, which he greeted with a smile and a small kiss to each cheek.

"You are five minutes late, but I am ten, so I think we will spare the fuss."

Evelyn gave a small chuckle, moving past him to set the bags on the counter. A wry look back to him, and she set about unpacking, ever mindful to place her purchases carefully in line.

"Prosciutto," she started, her grin still remaining. Asparagus, onions, red bell peppers, fresh rosemary and thyme, and arugula soon followed. True, there was not a lot, but it was enough, and she knew that Henri would use everything that she'd bought.

Like it was a ritual, the immortal compressed the two plastic bags into a small ball, then placed them in the rubbish bin.

Enticed by the aromas from the stove, she hovered over the pot for only a moment, taking in the scent. It was wonderful.

"Coq au vin? I've not had this since," a pause as she remembered.

"Since Paris."

Veritas

"It was on sale."

Henri confessed as he smirked, which nearly risked leaking into a smile. Talk of Paris would lead to too much nostalgia, too fast, he thought.

"Ah, good."

He carefully unwrapped the paper shroud holding the prosciutto together, and leaned forward to smell the scents of wine, spice, and curing agents in the paper-thin Italian ham.

"Wonderful things to teach me there are no absolutes in life. Nearly everything Italian is merde. Italians are feckless lazy oafs who smell always of body odor and petrol, but somehow they make prosciutto and have some other merits, so they are absolved."

Extinguishing his cigarette, he slid the rubber bands off the cluster of asparagus, running a finger along one stalk up to the purple-tinged spear tip. He moved to the sink and began to wash them.

"Would you cut the onions please?"

Evelyn Cato

There was a moment's hesitation as Evelyn allowed herself the rare opportunity to tease at him.

"Surely you haven't gotten tender eyes with age," she said, pulling a knife from the drawer and moving the onions to the cutting board.

Veritas
May 7th, 2010, 03:41:13 PM
"Certainly not."

Henri cast a look over his shoulder at her as he shut off the tap, drying the asparagus in a towel before setting them on the counter next to her.

"I only have two hands, after all."

He turned towards the fridge to remove a crock of chilled smoked salmon and capers, along with a small puck of tripel créme Brie.

"And my policy is to let immortals handle any sharp objects if given the choice."

Evelyn Cato

As she went about expertly cutting the onion, Evelyn gave a half-turn of her head, looking at what Henri removed from the refrigerator. It was enough to make her pause, and she gave the slightest of sighs before returning to her work.

It wasn't long before she had finished her task, and making sure that not a single bit of cut onion had fallen from the cutting board, she gently set the knife down.

"I hurt just as much as you do if cut," she mused as an afterthought.

Veritas

"Certainly, but I would think with dozens of lifetimes of experience, that you've still come out with ten fingers speaks volumes, would you agree?"

Again a near-smile, and Henri dutifully took up the knife to shear the bottoms off the asparagus.

"I often wonder if you have so much talent in so many things that it would be a chore simply to remember so many proficiencies."

Carefully, Henri began to wrap strips of prosciutto around each stalk of asparagus, mindful to set any small scraps to the side on a dish.

A hmph, and Evelyn rested an elbow on the counter as she watched him work. He'd not lost any amount of his passion for food preparation in the years that they'd been separated, and she gave an inward smirk at the observation.

"Well," she began in a rather clipped - if not poking - tone, "for one thing I've cut asparagus enough to know that you've sliced off far too much from the base."

For as much as he might seem to enjoy this newfound opening to needle at her 'experience' and whatnot, she too had found an equally enjoyable hobby in nattering back at him.

"If you miss the woody base of the stem so dearly, I will make sure to send the scrap home with you."

For emphasis, Henri held up a piece of the severed vegetable to Evelyn for her approval.

"This is the first lunch of the month that has not been a guided study lecture. I am amused to see that heated debates are still on the menu."

Evelyn Cato
May 8th, 2010, 07:02:26 PM
Her inward smirk showed itself outwardly, and she gave a half-hearted shrug of indifference.

"Do with your leavings what you will. I've enough food at my own home to be satisfied without bringing more back."

Her gaze moved from him to the refrigerator, knowing that he undoubtedly had what she wanted kept safely inside.

"And our wine?"

It was the one thing that she'd allowed herself to become rather... juvenile about. A weakness that she allowed.

Evelyn Cato was what one might consider a wine thief.

"I would suggest the pinot noir on the counter. It is the same winery used for the coq au vin."

He looked at her with a knowing expression.

"But I suppose your penchant for merlot is as constant as your immortality, and I took that into account as well."

He gestured to another bottle, tucked nearly out of sight behind some other sundries.

Evelyn Cato
May 15th, 2010, 06:37:00 PM
A wide smile, and Evelyn reached out to grasp the almost hidden bottle.

"I'm touched that you remembered," her eyes scanned over the label. "It is nice to see that age has not dulled all of your faculties."

Without giving him a chance to respond, she turned her gaze once more to him.

"Glasses. And the corkscrew - where are they kept... ?"

In the midst of washing the bell peppers, Henri paused with a distracted look to his face.

"Dining room hutch."

That done, he arranged the bells onto a tray and ran them under the broiler. Keeping the door open, he watched the veggies like a hawk, quick to turn them as the skin began to blister and intermittently char.

"Do you have any plans for your summer hiatus?"

With nothing to do now but to keep the peppers from burning under the blue flames of the broiler, he lit another cigarette and made small talk.

Evelyn Cato
May 15th, 2010, 07:04:38 PM
His words were true, and she returned shortly with two glasses and the corkscrew.

"I have not decided yet."

The glasses set gently on the counter, her next task fell to opening the bottle of merlot.

"Perhaps I will travel. It has been a long time since I saw America. It would be interesting to see how she has grown since our last meeting."

A brief look was sent to him from over the tops of her eyes as she flipped the corkscrew lever with very evident ease.

"Why do you ask?"

Veritas
May 15th, 2010, 07:09:18 PM
"I ask because it's pertinent."

It was a strange question to him, but they'd always differed in tact. Their next most important event was that very hiatus.

With tongs, Henri deftly moved the peppers as they reached the threshold, keeping them in motion with one hand as he tucked his cigarette with the other.

"I too have been thinking of travel. I am as of yet undecided to what scope or purpose. I think I would like to spend time fishing, but I am loathe to be reminded too much of Marseilles."

Evelyn Cato
May 15th, 2010, 07:17:30 PM
Evelyn arched a single eyebrow as she poured herself a glass of wine.

"And if you travel, will it be to somewhere outside of the country?"

She watched as he worked, blinking while taking a sip.

Veritas
May 15th, 2010, 07:22:59 PM
"I think not."

At last, Henri deftly snatched a trio of piping-hot and gently-smoking bell peppers from the broiler, and dropped them carefully into a waiting paper bag to let them cool. He killed the gas to the broiler, checked the coq au vin, and with cigarette pursed between his lips, removed the dutch oven at last to rest on the stovetop.

"I can afford the frivolity, but I have no desire to become a tourist. I am already a stranger in a strange land, so to speak."

Evelyn Cato
May 15th, 2010, 07:31:26 PM
"Aren't we all just that."

Stepping close to stand beside him, she watched with an interested gaze, every so often sipping from her wine.

"Not abroad then... "

She seemed to mull over the opportunities.

"I hear that the Pacific Northwest is a nice place. Seattle perhaps?"

Veritas
May 15th, 2010, 07:35:29 PM
Henri said nothing, tapping on his cigarette as he gingerly removed the char-flecked and shriveled peppers from the bag, easily slipping the stems and seeds from them as he tossed the tender flesh into a waiting food processor.

At last, he looked up.

"I was thinking west, yes. Seattle, you say?"

Evelyn Cato
May 15th, 2010, 07:49:04 PM
She gave an almost flippant wave of her hand.

"Merely a suggestion. I've never been there, but I hear that it is a very beautiful city."

Leaning back on the counter, she watched his back as he began to blend the peppers.

"Of course, that is only one possible destination out of so many. Where you choose to spend your time is up to you."

A few moments of pause as she gave a quirk of her head, taking another drink.

"Though if you wish, you are always welcome to travel with me."

"I was thinking of driving the Pacific highway. Stay on the move, stop when I'm interested."

He casually plucked needle-like leaves from a sprig of rosemary and pitched other accompaniments into the processor.

"Seattle, I think, would be a good place to start."

Evelyn Cato
May 15th, 2010, 08:07:17 PM
Though he could not see her expression, the satisfied smile that she wore conveyed her satisfaction at his wandering thoughts.

"It is always good to not limit yourself to one place of interest. See all that you can and never for a moment think that you've found the end of your journeys."

Another sip, and she rocked forward to stand up straight, one hand going out to lightly give his shoulder a pat as she moved to step by him.

"It isn't healthy."

"I have had every incentive to slow down."

Henri looked disdainfully at the cane he had propped against the living room wall, which he typically used for extended walking.

"I refuse. A habit from the Gendarmerie perhaps."

The lull of conversation was used to add olive oil, some sherry vinegar, salt, and pepper to the processor, and to zip it up to pulverize the contents. Two cloves of garlic were added as an afterthought and the blades kept turning. Walking towards the threshold of the kitchen with his pronounced limp, Henri gestured to the Pinot Noir.

"Will you be so kind?"

Evelyn Cato
May 15th, 2010, 08:47:57 PM
"I always am."

With little effort she plucked both the wine and the empty glass up, careful to balance the full one she already held.

Following after him, Evelyn went on.

"Your persistence was not from the Gendarmerie I do not think. Aided by, perhaps, but I recall you carrying that particular 'habit' long before then."

"I was young and had no money. It was pragmatic then."

Henri returned to the food processor and shut it down, spooning the thick sauce into a crock and finishing it with pine nuts. He passed it to Evelyn with the unsaid request to set it on the dining table while he continued to finish up in the kitchen. The asparagus and prosciutto would be nearly finished in a few minutes, and everything else was essentially done. He allowed himself some wine at this point.

"I have had numerous opportunities to rest on my laurels, especially since the shooting. The incentives to do so are tempting, but I fear that if I take them, I will be unable to do anything else anymore."

Evelyn Cato
May 16th, 2010, 04:16:13 PM
Her task of placing the red pepper sauce on the table was easily done, and she returned to the kitchen - she'd left her wine beside her plate, knowing that Henri would rather she have two hands able to receive dishes to set out.

"And when you do take them? What will you do?"

Veritas
May 16th, 2010, 05:33:32 PM
Bread was passed along to Evelyn, along with some prepared egg noodles for the main dish. Likewise, the salmon ceviche and brie were dispensed, and at last, the coq au vin. The final touch was to remove the asparagus, and at last, lunch could be served.

Henri could at last sit, and heavily contemplate Evelyn's words.

"How casual it must seem, you to ask me this?"

Evelyn Cato
May 17th, 2010, 04:49:39 PM
"I see nothing 'casual' about what I ask."

She pursed her lips, and there was a hint of the slightest rebuke in her tone.

"I am curious to know your answer, that is all."

Veritas

He took on a slightly incredulous expression.

"I cannot say. Is it existentialist of me to have simply neglected to tend to the inevitable?"

He sipped at his wine and reached for a slice of baguette and the tripel crêmé.

"I am afraid of this terribly."

Evelyn Cato
May 18th, 2010, 09:11:22 PM
For her part, Evelyn plucked two stalks of the wrapped asparagus, setting them on her plate before taking a piece of the baguette as well, content to wait until Henri was finished with the brie.

"... do you feel your life unfulfilled then, to have this fear?"

Veritas
May 18th, 2010, 11:13:03 PM
"Not particularly. But it is my life. I have only this finite time. One shot and only one."

The frenchman spread some brie over a slice of baguette and had a bite of it. Pausing, he sipped his wine and shook his head.

"I have regrets, but I think few for a man my age. But even if I had none, I think I would still have trouble accepting a day I no longer draw breath."

Evelyn Cato
May 19th, 2010, 08:22:53 PM
She pulled the brie closer to her plate, and with the knife provided, began to spread a small bit over the top of her baguette. A few silent bites, and Evelyn leaned back in her seat to look at Henri.

"I would be concerned if you did not have any regrets."

She took up her glass, sipping.

"Very few men are accepting enough to be ready when their time comes; even those who have lived nearly a century. There is always something else to be done."

A smile.

"To pull your last breath while in the pursuit of something you wish to see and experience is not a bad thing."

Veritas
May 19th, 2010, 09:03:42 PM
The salmon ceviche was soon dispensed onto another slice of bread, and pressed a stray caper to his finger, bringing it to his lips. Pausing, he shrugged.

"I think any regrets I have kept by this point would be irreconcilable to begin with. Ideally, my death will be chance and unseen. I have no interest in languishing in its expectation."

Evelyn Cato
May 19th, 2010, 09:42:53 PM
A smile, and Evelyn plucked one of the asparagus stalks from her plate, biting off a small bit from the very tip. She watched Henri as she chewed slowly, a smile creeping onto her face.

"That is a good outlook to have," she finally offered.

"But enough talk of endings - let us speak of beginnings and any other manner of less downward talk."

Veritas
May 20th, 2010, 10:47:45 PM
"Beginnings, hmm."

Henri nodded, glad to be cleared of the morose.

"I think a trip out west would also be a good opportunity to look for new potential students. Perhaps what I'd be interested in is rather a working holiday I suppose."

Evelyn Cato
May 21st, 2010, 05:00:07 PM
The concept was one that gave her pause, and swallowing, Evelyn gave him a sidelong, appraising look.

"Is that so?"

A coy smile as she popped the last of her asparagus into her mouth, chewed, and washed it down with another sip of wine.

"I suppose I should not be surprised. Even so long ago you were never one to be still for long."

Veritas
May 22nd, 2010, 08:04:12 PM
Henri looked somewhat surprised.

"Is that not what we are doing?"

He knew what she meant, but he had some enjoyment at teasing at her paradigm. Reaching forward, he procured a pair of asparagus stalks of his own, cutting them into neat sections with his knife.

"Even leisure has a, shall we say, pragmatic reason. Things you neglect for want of the time to think of them, you now have time to think about. That is why this is important. We talk, you see. Some would consider this to be time wasted."

Evelyn Cato
May 22nd, 2010, 09:16:20 PM
Evelyn made a face as she took another piece of bread, spreading a small amount of the red pepper pesto along its' top.

"It is sad, but for some people, they would look at what we are doing right now and believe with all of their heart and soul that we are sitting idle, doing nothing."

Veritas
May 22nd, 2010, 10:01:13 PM
"And in some way, perhaps it is true."

Leaning back, Henri sipped his wine.

"Think of this. What can I say to you that you have not in some way already heard? What can I ask that I cannot simply compel without risk of having no answer? To the prudent and efficient, perhaps they would be correct in their assumptions."

Evelyn Cato
May 24th, 2010, 04:10:35 PM
"Perhaps. But perhaps no matter how many times I hear something, it is the manner of telling that offers more than the subject at hand."

Evelyn smiled at the thought of it.

"Most times though, I find that it is the company I enjoy most. What we do or do not do matters little to me."

Veritas
May 25th, 2010, 10:26:51 PM
"Then you would be a conoisseur of perspective."

Henri carefully served the main coq au vin to Evelyn at first, and then to himself.

"I have a more antagonistic relationship to it. There is truth, what you, I, others would say of something to be true. A human consensus, I suppose. You could then ask myself, yourself, and three other people of this truth, and the truth, as it were, would be different according to each. Truth is no longer a binary, it is now subjective. Not through malice or intent to mislead, but because we are simply different."

Henri briefly fussed with his main dish, spearing off some tender wine-soaked meat for a bite.

"Perspective, then, represents nails in a board, all at differing height. I aim to hammer them down to level."

Evelyn Cato
May 28th, 2010, 08:40:30 PM
This made her pause. Evelyn set her fork down, staring at Henri with a puzzled expression.

"When all the nails are level, life loses its' essence."

She leaned forward a bit, toward him.

"The how and why of it all comes from such diversities."

Veritas

"I am a detective, madamoiselle."

He looked nearly glib as he took another bite.

"I may not be paid for that task, but I remain as such, and will always be."

Evelyn Cato
May 29th, 2010, 10:59:36 AM
Arching a single eyebrow, she went back to her meal. A few moments of silence passed between the two before she spoke once more.

"I dare say you've not changed; even your ability cook has remained the same."

It was an almost teasing smile that she cast his way, and reaching out, Evelyn gave his hand a gentle pat.

"Were but all men like you."

Veritas

"Ah, but then you would become bored of this."

He looked at her in a similar teasing manner.

"And boredom would be terminal in your state, paradoxical as it may be."

Evelyn Cato

A small laugh, and Evelyn conceded with a nod.

"You may be right."

Looking over the spread that Henri had prepared for their lunch, she leaned back in her set, taking up her glass.

"Of course if our lunches are always as diverse as this, then I expect boredom will have a hard time of rearing its' head. Fear not Henri Bertrand - I will never grow tired of you."

That mysterious smirk which she reserved only for him, and Evelyn sipped at her wine.
