View Full Version : 70 minute YouTube review of SW Episode I - TPM

Most of you may have already seen it, as it seems to have been posted nearly everywhere else over the last 2-3 months or so (maybe even here, but I couldn't find any thread about it so I'm posting it now). But if you haven't, you've got to watch this. :)
The guy runs an outfit called Red Letter Media, which amongst other things does reviews of films. His schtick though is to review them via a character alias, often under the guise of 'Mr Plinkett' who is inspired from Buffalo Bill/Hannibal Lecter.
Here's his TPM review - be warned it's 70 mins long (though it is thankfully broken up into 10 min segments). I have to say that humour aside he pretty much nails every single problem with the film. He's currently working on a review for AOTC (and then presumably ROTS as well).
Oh, and it's also fucking hilarious :lol (seriously, how would YOU describe Qui-Gon to a non-SW fan?).

Every single point he makes is true and he's very surprisingly insightful about movies and story telling. The voice nonewithstanding, his knowledge clearly makes him worth listening to.
And the absolute gutting of that worthless sack of shit known as TPM is just brilliant to boot :D

Admittedly the voice he uses can be a love/hate thing - I found it hilarious personally. As I said in the original post the character is inspired from Buffalo Bill of Silence of the Lambs (hence why you see gags such as the hooker tied up in the basement - if you check out his other videos he continues the gag such as revealing how he killed his ex-wife etc).
Surprised at the lack of comment here :( - was the voice that much of a turn off for people? At TheForce.Net this review sparked a 10+ page debate as to whether his criticisms of TPM were valid or not.

It's been posted before, I think...plus I'm pretty sure most of us here think TPM was a turd of a film :3

Anyone who actually defends that utter turd of a film needs a good kick in the genitals, not debated and half taken seriously.

Yeah, this is a long rant, but a rather entertaining one at that (very funny). It's also spot on discussing and analyzing several weaknesses of TPM. Highly recommended.

Wow, I must be blind. :lol
Edit - to contribute a bit more, his youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/RedLetterMedia) is well worth visiting, because there are also Star Trek movies and Avatar reviews up there, and he is working on an AOTC review..

I am yet again surprised and impressed that when you get past the jokes and muttering, how genuinely insightful this guy is. And the hooker running gag is in itself a great point on the middle act of a trilogy. He really has done it very well.
part 9 by itself is the best part and truly good at dissecting AoTC
Edit : Cant wait for his dissection of ROTS. I wonder how he'll handle the clear absurdity of Anakin's fall?

Mr Plinkett's review of Episode 3 is now up: Linky poo (http://www.redlettermedia.com/)
I'm only half way through the 1st video so far. Nothing LOL funny yet, though I'm enjoying his gratitude that Han Solo wasn't in the prequels. :lol

And yet again he nails what made everyone uneasy and why in reality once the hype died they are all just steaming piles of shit AND justifiably rips the SW nerds a new asshole.
He is still highly insightful about moviemaking too.

Holy shit Cat rape! out of nowhere!
Absolutly, completely and totally pulls apart ROTS, shows exactly why it stinks and then he goes and shows how to actually do menace and suspense - You can without mercy be critical but the way this guy SHOWS how easy it is to do the points he is making is what is the best about the reviews. He's showing exactly how bad Lucas truly is, how lazy and unthinking - then pulls in two minutes a shot that is better than is anything in ROTS!
This should be called moviemaking 101 and then shown in film schools, it is that good an essay on how a good movie should be made.
Masterclass of an essay in film, this has to be watched by anyone - execpt if you want to cling to the thought any of the prequels have any worth at all.

I watched the first part but now I'll check out the other two parts. I find the review drags somewhat, I mean it is an hour long after all, but his Buffalo Bill voice doesn't annoy me as much anymore so it's bareable - especially when my head and heart are crying out "Yes! Yes! Yes!" at every point he makes, plus he's funny!

If anyone finds it hard to sit through the full 90 mins (or so) of the entire review, just watch the 3rd video - in that one he pretty much sums up all his critiques about ROTS, the prequels overall and Lucas' filming methods in general. Worth the watch.
Admittedly though I think his TPM review was his magnum opus - his AOTC one plus this ROTS one are also very good but there isn't really anything new gag or joke wise.
One thing I quite enjoyed was how he brought up points I never considered, such as who actually commands the Republican forces (honestly, who???), plus also how awkward it is seeing Padme and Anakin all lovey-dovey on the balcony on Coruscant with everything else business-as-usual barely a day after the planet was attacked and the Chancellor kidnapped. o_O

I don't know why I found it so funny in particular, but I laughed my ass off at the 'tiny Han Solo' section. Just seeing that kid super-imposed on every scene... cracked me up.

Admittedly though I think his TPM review was his magnum opus - his AOTC one plus this ROTS one are also very good but there isn't really anything new gag or joke wise.
But he was more insightful, which to me was far better. He dropped the gags and simply got to work pointing out things that you never thought of - listing the things NOT in the movie that made it better was inspired. Shot/reverse shot also really was a great point as well CAT RAPE and the way he just shows Lucas for being incredibly lazy.
Just so many things he picks up on like Life goes on completely unaffected when there's a war? that should have been changed and you wonder what on earth everyone was thinking. There is a frigging war going on above their heads and Padme is in her luxury apartment as if nothing is going on?!?!? Where's the damage to the planet?!?!?
Plus he didnt target the low hanging fruit of absurdities.
