The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural–fantasy horror television series developed by Kevin Williamson, based on the book series of the same name by L. J. Smith. The series follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who falls in love with vampire brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). The series also focuses on the lives of Elena's friends and other inhabitants of the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. The series is a mix of teen drama and the supernatural.

Has anyone been watching this? It seems to have mixed reviews, but some of the critical response leads me to think it might be worth watching a couple of episodes to test it out...

I used to read these books in grade school and I was really surprised when they announced they were making it into a tv show. Then I realised they were just trying to cash in on the whole Twilight thing.

The books were great when I read them - L.J. Smith has a lot of trilogies about vampires and witches and stuff.

I was going to watch it, but never did. It seems to be doing okay though, and what I've read about it makes it sound good, lol.

Now usually this is where I chime in to say it's shit, everyone nods and says yep this is Marcus modus Operandi...

No, it's truly shit. It would not exist without Twilight. Think about that.

it existed BEFORE Twilight, dingus. Learn to read. It was a series of novels that came out before Twilight was written. :p

The TV show is what I was commenting on.

It doesn't necessarily mean that the show is crap. Just because they're trying to cash in on the recent Twilight-created vampire craze doesn't mean that the show they've created is on par with Twilight in terms of quality.

I haven't seen it or read the books, but I'm just saying.

edit: I should probably confess I'm the one person who loved the show Moonlight (another vampire show) and was sad when it got canceled after one season. And I was the one person who loved Invasion (cashing in on the LOST/sci-fi serialized drama craze, way back when) and was sad when it was canceled after one season.

The same could be said about True Blood, and what I've seen of that I've enjoyed.
