After last years extremely entertaining drunken voice chat (http://www.sw-fans.net/forum/showthread.php?t=19546), I'd like to motion that we - the posters of Europe (and any non-Euros who are fancy stepping into this continental clusterfuck / cultural time-warp) - take up the challenge of the Eurovision drinking contest for 2010! http://www.eurovision.tv/page/home

Since Norway won last year, they will be hosting the contest this year and it will take place on Saturday May 29th. Here is this years entry from the reigning champs/chumps:

I'd like to think that we stopped trying, once becoming pals with the US made us the pariah of Europe. Either that or we don't want the cost of being the host nation - but considering we pay part of the bill anyway, I think the truth might just be that we are awful.

Awful in a boring way, as opposed to lots of other countries who opt for the bat-shit insane approach to their entries.

Can Lordi re-enter? They need to

In theory, you may enter the contest as many times as you like. Johnny Logan even won twice. But I don't think Lordi plans to re-enter.

Finland's entry is god awful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK0tV3m4Irc), but wins points on comedy value. :lol

Lordi and Aqua, and ABBA all entered as successful music acts, iirc. We need to enter someone internationally successful; that way when the Uk gets no votes It'll highlight how futile trying to win Eurovision is, so we can quit investing tax payer's money in a lost cause. <_<

ABBA was somewhat successful in Sweden prior to Eurovision, but Waterloo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGs7dTjUsXw) was their international breakthrough. Their debut album Ring Ring was initially released in Scandinavia only, and in limited territories. In fact, they tried to enter the contest in previous years with 2 rejected entries, and 2 songs which failed to qualify in the Swedish finals. After Waterloo, they started topping international charts and had a successful tour, and the rest is history. Celine Dion was a complete unknown outside the French speaking world before her Ne partez pas sans moi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pEYw8PcBas) in 1988.

Random Eurovision geek trivia. :)

I think it is the same here in Germany although we have gone both ways in the past... I mean being awful and and the bat-shit insane approach.

I think Germany (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esTVVjpTzIY) is considered one of the better entries this year, actually (in a non ironic way). I don't think it's going to win, but will probably do ok.

Personally, I find the entry from Armenia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8dvxUv3XyY) rather catchy (do I need professional help?) :uhoh

Ugh... is it that time of the year again?!? Oh boy... I'll definitely try to be there for the drunken chat this time... :lol

You'd really think someone on the panel of German judges for the local contestants would take a hint from the fact that the last two German entries came in at #20 or lower.... this year's German entry is... uhh... I'm not even sure how to describe that adequately...

What sort of a weird accent is that?!?!

Eh... it's not all super bad like the last two entries - at least the song is catchy - but the weird accent is just really really irritating. It's not even that it sounds like someone with a heavy German accent trying to mask it, it's just ... a really weird accent.

Next to that old German entry, tho, this year's is fantastic o_O ... what were they thinking?!?!?

You use their new (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13526_3-20005293-27.html) service "Spotify Open", which requires no invite:
http://www.spotify.com/int/blog/archives/2010/05/18/open-and-unlimted/

(Edit: That has a limit of 20 hours per month though. In order to get an invite to the unrestricted free service, you need someone with a paid subscription to invite you. I am also on the free service like Jen)

In other news, looks like I probably won't be able to make the drunken voice chat the 29th, because I got some cheap last minute ticket to Mallorca. I'll bring my laptop, microphone, and hope there is a wireless Internet service on the hotel just in case, but can't make any promises.
