Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has today announced Lord of the Rings: War in the North, a multiplayer action-RPG hybrid for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Based on Tolkien’s epic fantasy novels, War in the North takes three players online to form a fellowship and fight Sauron’s forces in the north of Middle Earth.

The game is in development at Snowblind studios – best known for producing the console title Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance back in 2003.

“With The Lord of the Rings: War in the North we are taking a mature approach to the widely celebrated property with authentic portrayals of battles and all new storylines,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

I really like the idea of a fantasy based RPG with (some) multiplayer capabilities coming to consoles. If for no other reason than I get a kick out those sort of things and think me and my one (future) roomie will probably end up playing together over Xbox Live, cursing at each other and the big uglies we have to kill from opposite sides of the house. :lol

Hell, we kinda do that already with the L4D games and Borderlands so something like this could have a lot of potential, I think.

Just have to keep an ear out for more actual game mechanics information to see if I'll actually like the way it plays or not...
