Will Smith is one of the most successful actors of the 2000s, and was labelled by Newsweek in 2007 as "the most powerful actor on the planet". Which of his films from the last decade is your favourite?

Independence Day, of course!

Independence Day, of course!
Though it is probably my favourite Will film... Independence Day wasn't this decade, Droo. ;)
...man, that makes me feel old. :(

Independence Day, of course!
Epic Fail :lol
As the Captain said that's not from the last decade (ie. the 2000s) - it was released in 1996 to be precise.

Bad Boys 2 hehe
I loved the first one and the second one was a nice way to get in touch with some old friends. :)
Certainly 7 pounds (that is missing in this list), Ali and the Pursiut of Happyness are much better choices since they have a lot more drama and better performances but I have to stay honest here. I enjoyed all of these movies but Bad Boys 2 is just a funny ride that I will take more than once.

Sorry - the original poll had 12 options (I think) but we're restricted to only 10 here on SW-Fans, so I just took the top 9 then put in 'Other' to cover the rest.

The only one that's memorable, that I've seen, is Men in Black II and that's not a shade of its predecessor. Will Smith is a great talent but I think his films are pretty unremarkable.

Voted I Am Legend. Everything about the movie was lackluster except for Will Smith's performance, which was brilliant. He single-handedly took the movie from mediocrity to actually being haunting and powerful, up until it turns into just another action film.
There was nothing he could do to save MiB 2 or I, Robot. I didn't see anything else on that list.

I haven't seen most of these, but I do like Will Smith a great deal...really liked Hancock.

I've only seen 2 films of Smith's in the last decade - Men in Black 2 and Hancock, neither of which I thought were really good (the latter I enjoyed until it fell apart in the last half). So I'm abstaining from voting. :(

And here I was going to take a shit on this poll and look I got my thunder stolen :(
You can legitimatly find reason to say ALL those movies are utterly awful and Will Smith is not worth watching.
really liked Hancock.
There's a good movie in there .... if you surgically remove and nuke the last 2/3rds.

Yeah every single one of those movies are shit.
Really one of the few Will Smith movies that was great was Enemy of the State and that was because of Gene "Motherfucking Tinfoil" Hackman
Droo
Mar 12th, 2010, 07:39:56 AM
Oh yeah, Enemy of the State was good too. Although probably wrong decade again? :uhoh
Anyway, he has the reverse effect of Nicholas Cage to me, in that I really like Will Smith, just not his films. And for an example, I echo Firestorm's sentiments about I Am Legend, poor film overall but his performance in it is excellent.

I'm kinda with you on that, Droo. He redeems I Am Legend and Hancock for me: the story is pretty much a steaming pile, but his portrayal of the character makes the movie enjoyable.
I think that's why I like Men in Black 2. It's the same story as movies like Dodgeball: they aren't "good" by most standards, but if you aren't expecting something Oscar-worthy and you just wanna sit down and watch something that won't require you to think too hard, it works well. Makes for good "Sick Day" watching.

I generally like his films but I find him an incredibly jarring presence on screen. Funnily enough, I like the look of his character in Kick Ass, probably because it closely resembles my perception of him.
And as for Men in Black 2, I just liked it for the pairing of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones again. Mainly for Tommy Lee Jones though. I love him in those films.

The wicker man. Ghost Rider. Windtalkers. Next. Bangkok Dangerous. All horribly bad movies.
Nicholas Cage is a very hit or miss guy. He can either be absolutely awesome in a role or freaking terrible. There is no moderate options for him :lol
And I gotta say I like Will Smith. I really enjoyed a "The pursuit of Happiness"

My point is that his Alabama accent is literally the shittiest take at a southern accent I've ever heard.
Nobody in Alabama talks the way he did, much less anybody from Mobile. His accent was some sort of downs syndrome caricature of an antebellum Georgian drawl...or something.
You carpetbaggers may not notice, but the southern dialect is regional, and by no means is the same in each state.

It amuses me to hear accent criticisms from a member of a nationality renowned for interpreting any British accent that isn't Queen's English as "Australian". :lol
I'm sure you're more discerning than that Charley... just chuckling at the irony.

I don't expect anybody other than southerners to really understand my rage at that shitty movie though.

Errr..... no. When subjected to a real Aussie accent, every single Merican asked me "Are you from London...?"
The single time they ever got it was when "G'day" was thrown in and then "OMG Do you know Steve Irwin??????". In fact the ONLY time in my adventures around the world I have been correctly located was in general NZ and Canada.

I did notice that. And I have to say I like me a good ol Southern lady accent.

No? Isn't that exactly what he was saying, just in reverse? He was saying American's confuse English accents for an Australian accent. Naturally, when such an American hears an Aussie talk, they'd be inclined to think it was British. In any case, I'd certainly have no difficulty identifying an Australian accent, although I daresay I could possibly confuse it for a New Zealand accent. Same with general American and Canadian accents for me.

Canadian accents are easy - you just have to keep your ears peeled for the "eh" and "aboot." French-Canadian is easier as they talk like crazy people.
I'd be a bit lost trying to discern between New Zealand and Australian, unless the two were talking to me at the same time. Then I could probably tell which was which.
American is also easy. We all talk like cowboys. :clint

Why yes it would be. I'm pointing out real Mericans think England first, not Australia as he stated.

There is actually a very big difference in certain words - Listen for the sux (six) Fush and Chups (Fish and Chips). Stryne (Aussie accent) is less slurred and Ostralian uses more slang and less ehhhh bro.
And absolutly nothing referrign to sheep shagging.
Oh yes, Kiwi's have a small brother complex about Australia, like Canadians do to the USA

It's cheesy because of the kid, but I really enjoyed Legend of Bagger Vance. And I don't even like Golf! It's just a good movie.
Even tho the accents are all over the place.
((One of the most abused accents in film, is the Texan accent. It's been a subject of mass irritation since I was about 7.))

I perfectly get that, but I can't turn my brain off if it's literally shorting out from the worst Alabama accent attempt I've ever heard. You must empathize with me, because know for certain there are some monstrously dreadful fake german lilts that get tossed about cinema and small screen nearly constantly too.

I understand Charley perfectly. What happens to him, happens to me with Fargo, some say a great movie but I just can't get past the ridiculously overdone Minnesota accent. Sure, people say "Ya, you betcha!" but it's really not the second word of every third word coming out of people's mouth.

Most of the time I take it in jest - it's just overblown and exaggerated for comedic value in my opinion. I doubt the writer actually thinks 'yeah, everypne from here talks like this all the time!'.
Except Liverpool. The scouse accent is very very very consistent with some of the less-evolved members of Merseyside. If you've seen The 51st State, watch Rhys Ifans - I'd say at least 70% of people in Liverpool talk like that all the time.
Incidentally Rhys Ifans does the best scouse accent I've heard from a non-Scouse actor. You'd be forgiven for thinking he's from The Pool. :p
