View Full Version : Dental Procedures

Years of neglect of my teeth has lead to a number of very lovely dental procedures over the past few months. I've just today had my third and hopefully my last root canal done, with the post-op post, crown preparation, and some fillings in my future. But I thought I would go ahead and create a poll thread so we can vote on what everyone's least favorite part of some dental procedures are.
EDIT: My personal choice is the black gel during the second crown prep appointments. It tastes so awful, like something between coffee and oil, and it just fills your mouth right up. I always eat something deliberatly too spicy just to get that taste out of my mouth.

Root canal is generally the worst if the nerve is so inflamed that the anesthesia is not working..

Thankfully I've not had any problems from my teeth. I did get the ole' wisdom tooth yank-out about a year and a half ago or so, but other than that nothing major.
Loratabs are very nice. I like them a lot :)

Worst thing I've had done would have to be the wisdom teeth pull. Simply because my operation was a little, whats the right word, messy?
I had a third front tooth (mutant!) that was still in the roof of my mouth. It never ended up coming down (obviously since my other adult front teeth were sitting there). So the surgeon had to slice three times (he missed the spot twice) into the roof of my mouth and pull it out.
Then for my wisdom teeth (I only had the bottoms) both teeth wouldn't come out. So he had to break them and remove the splintered fragments.
Needless to say painkillers were my friend for the next week and a half.

My doctor gave me the option of general or just the numbing. I went general without a doubt. I'd been having friends at work regale me with their horror stories of being awake for the procedure, and hearing the ungodly racket that goes on in your mouth when wisdom teeth are being extracted. Needless to say I was not keen on experiencing that ^_^;

I did local for all my wisdom teeth because I'm a man and I like the sound of rending bone and flesh

Droo I know what you mean - I've had moulds taken a few times of my teeth by my orthodontist, and its quite an experience. Not awful though.
I rather like the dentist. :ohno The worst was probably my braces though, getting them tightened. But in the end it was all worth it, so I don't complain too much (plus my parents paid a lot of money for it!)

One of my wisdom teeth has come through; the other three are on the way, but luckily they seem to have found enough space in my gums, so it looks like I won't need anything pulled.
I had a couple of fillings, but I think those were in my kid teeth - I don't remember the procedure - so they're gone now. My mouth is more or less dental problem free. Woo!
Doctors scare the willies out of me, though; not quite as much as regular doctors, but I avoid going as much as is humanly possible. >_<

I've had a decent amount of dental work done lately to prepare my teeth for braces. The worst part of any of it for me is the shot into your gums and the pain in that area after the numbness wears off. Though the second worse is the tightening of the braces I now have. >_<
I kind of liked getting the mold taken of my teeth, actually. It felt like biting into really goopy silly puddy.

Careful. I was in the same situation, and my teeth had all come through, but there was a small flap of skin partially covering each tooth, and despite my efforts to keep things clean back there, a bit of food got under one of the flaps and became infected. My whole jaw hurt, and when I went to the dentist he said that while I had plenty of room in my mouth for them, they had to come out else I'd have to deal with constant infection which had the possibility of leading to worse stuff.
After everything is all said and done, I still kinda miss my wisdom teeth, and it still feels funny back there when I run my tongue over the healed holes, but it's better in the long run. Plus I don't ever have to worry about getting fat off of pudding and jello cups. It's been over a year and a half and I'm still sick of those stupid things.

I was just about to post a barb about Jenny never having teeth problems, only to find out I did a year ago. I'm so proud of my past self

:lol
well, I've never had a tooth removed, had any root canals, crowns or anything like that. I'm still young though so there's plenty of time for me to fulfil the stereotype!

The only dental procedure I've had was braces/retainer, but honestly they should have waited until my body had stopped growing. When I have kids they're gonna have to deal with possibly crooked teeth until they're over 20.

I still wear my retainer. It's the only way to ensure your teeth don't get crooked again.

I've never had braces/a retainer although quite a few people when I was at school. The dentist always said my teeth were straight enough that it wasn't worth wearing anything... although they'd probably be hideously crooked by US standards :mneh

I think the reason they start dental work when people are young is because kids are still growing. So their Jaw/teeth are still malleable enough to shape without any big consequences.
I'm one of the few who had braces in my 20's and one of my dentists biggest concerns was my jaw. If it didn't move the way he needed it would have to be broken and reset. BUT I was lucky with newer technology my jaw moved like it was supposed too.
I guess with technology having braces when you're a kid might start to become a thing of the past. Although the chance of having your jaw broken, stapled back together, with the risk of nerve damage causing permanent numbing... I don't know if that's a risk I would want to take given the choice.
On the flip side I remember getting to cavities and having them filled. Only to have those two (BABY TEETH) fall out a few months later. Son of a bitch dentist.
