Shigeru Miyamoto is getting a BAFTA Fellowship!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/video-games/7306468/Shigeru-Miyamoto-honoured-by-Bafta.html

Shigeru Miyamoto – the influential Japanese video games designer behind titles such as Mario Bros and Donkey Kong – has been honoured by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. He will receive the Fellowship at this year's Bafta Video Game Awards, which take place on March 19.

"The Fellowship is the highest accolade the Academy can bestow on an individual for their creative work," said David Parfitt, chairman of Bafta. "We are honoured to have Miyamoto with us to accept his award. With previous honorees including Hitchcock, Kubrick and Pinter, it is only fitting that Miyamoto be recognised alongside these other pioneers for his groundbreaking work. He helped to develop an entire creative industry, and is still a major force in its continuing success."

That's awesome. I honestly can't think of anybody who deserves it more.

On a similar note, I read that Hideo Kojima received the lifetime achievement award at the GDC 2009 awards. Some people absolutely loathe the Metal Gear series but I'm a huge fan and was very pleased to hear that'd he'd received the recognition I feel he deserves. The Metal Gear Solid series is one of my all-time favourites with the original PSOne game being in my personal top five. I love the over-the-top, convoluted plot as well as the cinematic cutscenes which are pulled off with as much pomp and flair as any hollywood blockbuster and then some. Even the tongue in cheek humour is great - it constantly breaks the fourth wall and even pokes fun at and plays on itself. I consider it a work of art and although I consider Sons of Liberty the weak link in an otherwise flawless saga, every game is just brilliant.

Some reviews consider MGS4 his Magnum Opus, but I adore the first PSOne title, especially it's Gamecube remake. I recently downloaded the MGS Database which is free from the Playstation Store and have really enjoyed reading through the files on the various characters and fictional organisations and factions - and events - mentioned throughout the series. Like Keyser Soze in The Usual Suspects, there's a real sense of notoriety and fear surrounding some of the characters - most notably Revolver Ocelot who is feared in the West as Shalashaska. I love the names!

From what I've read... Activision is claiming breach of contract and insubordination on both of them... Their countering saying that the accusations are unfounded and unproven, and that they were fired so that Activision wouldn't have to pay up millions and millions in royalties.

Also read that in the lawsuit the IW guys are sueing for control over the Modern Warfare name, which is interesting if they get it. Means any new games would have to be produced by a different company.

Question for me, would be whether or not the name goes with the story or if they'd have to start over.

Oh and I'll toss in my "Not Surprised" given that it's Activision.

I like this new decade: It is a lot more funny to bash Activision Blizzard instead of EA Games.

Activision used to be the nice guys but once they started to make too much money and got greedy they lost their way.

What really makes me disappointed about Activision is that they and Blizzard have lost so many big developers at first and third pary titles. Bill Roper and John Carmack used to be big names and were connected to Activision's biggest titles in the past.

Me too :). I haven't played since Civ 3 (was going to get #4 but never got around to it - now that #5 has been announced though I think I'll just wait for it).

Apparently, Civ 5 is going to have hexagonal squares. O_o

on GT TV and this week's discussion is about interactivity in story telling.

One of the doctors from Bioware is at the show and he makes some nice points about Natal support in RPGs that made me wonder if Natal could be more than a Wii gimmick...(...that I will end up buying anyway because I am such a M$ Fanboy :rolleyes)

On the other hand one of the God of War developers has some good arguments against such an aproach.

But you better watch this video for yourself and maybe some of you want to discuss this topic a little bit.

Anyone else hear about the new online Battlestar Galactica MMO (http://www.bgo.bigpoint.com/)?

From what I've heard players will get to choose between human or Cylon and it'll be largely based on ship combat. Interesting concept.

I know. >_<

It was originally conceived before "Season 4.5", so they didn't know about the ultimate series finale. Presumably then, they'll have to contrive some sort of *other* convoy / fleet for the characters to be part of... there just aren't enough Vipers aboard Galactica - let alone anything else - to support an MMO.

To be honest though... what would players actually do? It's not like you can easily transition between planets as part of the game narrative...

Screw it. Do a Caprica MMO. Or a "first Cylon war" MMO.

Or NEW CAP CITY! :eee

Sony announced it's motion device yesterday called "Move". Interesting, but from everything I've read so far it almost sounds like a souped up Wii remote on a system that allows better graphics and games.

But they are first out of the gates with this seemingly, unless M$ releases Natal before Sony releases Move sometime in the fall.

Mind you I think Natal has more potential if they really can get something working where you can play without having any type of controller, be it a wand or mouse or anything... Especially if they can get it to work with shooters much in the same way that was shown in the movie "Gamer" but without the whole controlling real people thing.

:3 Nothing else matters to me right now...

Portal 2 (http://gameinformer.com/mag/portal2.aspx) is gonna happen.

Oh... and apparently Valve is bringing Steam over to the Mac platform at the same time with Portal 2 as their first release to be simultaneous for both platforms... Sadly I don't think this will retroactively bring all the games on Steam to Mac (at least, not right away... *crosses fingers*), but it makes me wonder if they'll make more of an attempt to make most games on the PC convertible over to the Mac through Steam at that point. I rather hope so... yep. I said it. :P

US, March 22, 2010 - If you're an avid online gamer chances are you sign onto, say, Xbox Live most nights and jump into a game of Modern Warfare or Gears of War with either your friends or some random players. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the majority of gamers you encounter are dudes, and probably immature dudes at that. What if you could pay a bit of cash to play Modern Warfare with an attractive girl? Or maybe relax with a casual game of checkers while you video chat with said female? A new social service launching tomorrow, March 23, called GameCrush (www.GameCrush.com (http://www.gamecrush.com/)) is hoping there are gamers out there willing to pay for the opportunity to play with girls.

Fans of the Fable series may be happy to know that your choices have an even greater impact on the visuals in the upcoming third installment. As a ruler, your decisions will impact the world itself as once-affluent regions could end up in poverty and vice versa. Also, as well as your general appearance altering based on your good/evil and pure/corrupt ratings, your weapons will also change. If you use swords for flashy combat, it will be long and slender, whereas those who favour axes and clubs will find they get large, spikey and cumbersome. And how you use the sword will also affect it. Defending people and only fighting evil will cause it to be pristine and even emit a Holy glowing effect like the Master Sword, but use your weapons for nefarious purposes and it will drip with blood and other stuff.

I adore Fable 2, and I really can't wait to get my hands on No. 3!

Fable 2 is cool.

I loved to have two wives living right next to each other so that everytime I come back home they start bitching around. Lead to a lot of unscripted comedy.

I am looking forward to Fable 3 because like in Fable 2 it will feature a Coop mode and there are not enough RPGs with coop mode. I still think that Oblivion would have been a lot more enjoyable with a coop mode because this world just cried for being shared with a friend.

Heheh, you give the 40k RPG "Dark Heresy" or "Rogue Trader" a shot? I play test the games and hang out with the devs on a regular basis.

Fantasy Flight Games (Starcraft the Board Game, WoW the Board Game, Citadels, Wings of War, Twilight Imperium, Tanhauser, Tides of Iron, the afore mentioned games, etc) is based out of Roseville, Minnesota. And I live about 5 minutes away. :p

IMO, the RPGs have done a great job keeping the atmosphere and using a unique dice system. Instead of making a DC check that you have to roll equal or hire than (ala D&D, and most RPGs). Percentile die (2 d10s) are rolled and you must roll equal to or less than your characteristic value for the skill (Weapon skill, Ballistic Skill, Preception, Intelligence, Strength, Toughness, Willpower, Fellowship) with modifiers based on talents and skill proficiency. For each full 10 you roll under, you get a "degree of success" and usually end up with a bonus of some sort.

....Not to mention the critical hit chart, insanity, and corruption are probably the most brutal sustem (and violently entertaining) of anything RPG I've seen.

So Peter Molyneux anounced that Milo is infact Skynet and Lionhead is just a meat camp for the machines.
You do not know who Milo is?
Watch this video and read the article below, FTW!

If the BBC is to be believed, Peter Molyneux said in his Milo TED talk yesterday that Microsoft has no current plans to release Kinect child-sim Milo & Kate.

Taken directly from the BBC’s report (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10623423): “At the moment, the technology is still in development and Microsoft has no plans to release it, he said.
“However, he hinted that the game was designed to be used for millions of people and therefore could one day become a commercial product.”
The news casts yet more confusion on the game’s proposed fate, following comments from Xbox production boss Aaron Greenberg last month (http://www.vg247.com/2010/06/29/microsofts-greenberg-milo-absolutely-still-in-development/).
The exec was seen saying in a video interview that Milo is “not a game that we’re planning to bring to market,” before later issuing a statement saying, “It is just not a product we plan to bring to market this holiday.”
Child’s play
While Milo’s future was yet again thrown into turmoil, however, Molyneux showed plenty more of the game in his TED talk yesterday, dropping first information on story and confirmation that Milo himself will learn via a Cloud-based system.
Milo is a child who’s just moved from the UK to New England. The game was played for “less than 15 minutes,” according to this Forbes report (http://blogs.forbes.com/velocity/2010/07/13/milo-and-kate-live-demo-cool-creepy/?partner=yahootix), but showed scenes in which Milo argued with his parents off-screen. Milo’s mother and father both work, apparently, and leave Milo alone for long periods.
The player – an “assistant” according to that piece – was seen talking to Milo about the argument and offering encouragement. They cleared up Milo’s room for him while he was away; the child noticed and thanked the player.
Molyneux said that Milo learns through a Cloud computing system, so as many people will hopefully play the game, Milo’s intelligence will grow.
“This is technology making use of collective intelligence for play,” said Molyneux.
Tell me about your father
The Lionhead boss explained that he wanted to make this game for two reasons: firstly, to recreate memories of interacting with his own father and, secondly, to inject self into games.
“TV, music games, most of media, doesnt include me and I loathe that,” said Molyneux. “I wanted to create a character that would notice me and look me in the eye.”
He said the system exploited psychological techniques to fool the player into feeling Milo is real.
The software allows “complete control” over facial elements such as blushing and even the diameter of Milo’s nostrils, which Molyneux said could denote stress.
“Most of it is just a trick – but it is a trick that actually works,” he said, as reported by the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10623423).
The Lionhead chief said that Milo doesn’t take long to get to know you.
“After three-quarters of a hour, he recognises you,” he said.
“I can promise you that if you are sitting in front of this screen, that is a truly wonderful moment.”
Molyneux also said that later stages of the game, which were not shown, allowed a player to explore the landscape with Milo more freely.
“There are lots of adventures – some of which are quite dark,” he said.
Snail’s pace
As reported yesterday (http://www.vg247.com/2010/07/13/molyneux-demos-milo-at-tedglobal-2010/), the volunteer cheered Milo up when he became sad, and even asked him to squash a snail which after a moment of hesitation, Milo complied.
“I love these revolutions and I love the future that Milo brings,” said Molyneux.
A video of the demonstration is to be posted on the TED Blog (http://blog.ted.com/) later this week.
Molyneux’s presentation was part of a session (http://www.vg247.com/2010/06/29/molyneuxs-milo-kate-ted-talk-detailed/) called “Human Systems”, which also featured talks from Matt Ridley, Steven Johnson, Chris Wild, and Annie Lennox.

Epic let's you decide over the fate of the last Carmine brother...
...So are Gears of War players a buch of jackasses?

Here's a new one. In an effort to drum up financial support for gamer charity Child's Play, Epic Games and Microsoft are giving fans the power to decide something rather unusual: if Clayton Carmine lives or dies in Gears of War 3.

The Carmines are the Gears equivalent of South Park's Kenny--they don't catch many breaks, and end up dying in every game. But if enough people decide to let this third brother, Clayton, live in Gears 3, then he actually will. The catch is that this isn't a funded fan poll or a debatable issue on a message board. Your vote on the matter of Carmine's life and death will be counted by an Avatar t-shirt purchase or an in-person physical purchase at San Diego Comic Con.

First I've heard about Infinity. I love the idea already:

"Like Elite, Infinity will offer a vast number of systems and planets. The universe will consist of approximately 200 billion star systems each with an assortment of planets, moons, and smaller bodies in addition to other phenomena such as nebulae and black holes. Procedural generation is used to create this vast universe on the fly as the player moves throughout the galaxy. This does not mean that each player will generate a random universe to explore on their own, but rather that each player's client will generate a universe identical to everyone else's, creating an effect similar to the non-procedural design of most standard MMOGs. In addition, the engine has the ability to automatically adjust planetary level of detail so that the player can seamlessly move from orbit to ground level without loading screens. Unlike in many space based computer games, realistic scales and distances are maintained, and planetary bodies move realistically about their stars"

The Sims Medieval was anounced:

The destiny of the kingdom rests in the players’ hands. Will players build up their kingdom through internal expansion, or perhaps look for a more imperial type of domination, expanding their rule by conquering territories? Will they take on quests in pursuit of fame, or focus on the health and wellbeing of their people? The choice is theirs! With the start of every new game, players will be able to select a new ambition for their kingdom, and embark on a new set of stories.
Everything in The Sims Medieval is crafted to create an immersive medieval world, from the quest-based gameplay, to the medieval objects such as swords and stocks and thrones, right down to the warm look of the characters, and the painterly approach to the world itself. Players can choose to customize every new Hero that comes to the kingdom, including selecting their traits and their fatal flaw. Players get close to their characters, not only sending them on epic quests, but also making sure they carry out their daily responsibilities such as healing the sick, trading for exotic goods, or forging armor. From having a baby to competing in a royal tournament, what happens to their Sims is up to the player. The time of romance and chivalry is back with The Sims Medieval.

I always thought that the idea behind the sims was to get a new audience consisting of teenage girls and casual gamers. Now turning the Sims into a RPG sounds intresting but is this really a smart idea for a business model?

If you care about the tech behind games you should take a look at this game. Hydrophobia is to my knowledge the first game that really tries to have 3D water physics and it looks pretty awesome.

This is infact one of my biggest complains about Bioshock. If you set it under water then your biggest enemy should be the water once it is unleashed but this never ever happens in Bioshock...

Hey this really looks like a Duke Nukem Game! I promised myself not to get hyped for the duke anymore but this looks really promising on the interactivity level and in the end Randy Pitchford is behind it and he made games like Brothers in Arms and Borderland.
And Brothers in Arms is one of the few game series that my brother plays from start to finish in single player and this is an honor only a few games get from him. I actually enjoyed Hell's Highway a lot myself since it was not the average WW2 game.

In the letter, Gates states:

Now I ask you--does a musician have the right to collect the royalty on the sale of his records or does a writer have the right to collect the royalty on the sale of his books? Are people who copy software any different than those who copy records and books?

Another statement made by MITS predisent Ed Roberts also refers to thieves and parasites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Hobbyists#.22Thieves.22_and_.22para sites.22).

So J.J. Abrams wants to produce a Half Life and a Portal movie. I kind of do not see why you would want to do those titles as movies. Both games' greatest strength is gameplay not story. Don't get me wrong here both games do a great job in "story telling" but in a way that it works perfectly for a video game experience.

Obviously none of those games is a true cinematic experience like a Max Payne or Uncharted Game so the writer will have to add in and take away a lot of things from the original product to make things work.

For example Cell could not be mute in a movie and most of the riddles would be absolutly boring for the audience since Portal is kind of based on the idea that you look at the room for a while do some trial and error and then move on to the next challenge. The whole thrill is solving the riddle but the audience does not get this challenge and so the concept of the game would not work for the movie.

The only way in which this movie might work is a PG version of the Cube with Glados and P-Body but without Cell and the companion cube.

That's assuming it's set inside Aperture Science labs. It could very well take place after Portal 2 and continue from there - possibly even bridge Portal and Half-Life as hinted at with the Borealis in Episode 2.

Initially, I'm skeptical about this announcement. Half-Life is my absolute favourite gaming IP and I adore the story and characters. I don't want to see them spoilt by an unnecessary movie. And there's a dilemma in the choice of protagonist, at least for me. It HAS to be Gordon Freeman, it's his story. Why else focus on another person. The supporting characters would be there, but the focus is on Gordon's adventure. And thats the problem - he's a mute protagonist. He's YOU - the player! Add an actor playing him, speaking in their own voice, and that ownership is taken away from the gamer. I can't see a way for it to work that will satisfy my own view of the character

This is mostly me raging, but I redeemed a code and key for a free download of Farcry 3 with my graphics card. I have to go through Uplay since I suppose all of the Steam keys were used up.

Uplay can kiss my ass. I hate this site and the code won't redeem. Not only that but every time I go to another page on the uplay site or anything, I have to sign into my account all over again.

This is a waste of my time and I'm not gonna go in a circle just to have to sign in over and over again.

I'll just make a Steam account and wait for Farcry 3 to drop in price before buying it.

So, there's a Stargate SG-1 game coming out. It tells a new story, it's voiced by the proper cast... and it's an iPhone app, with really rubbish graphics. Why expend that much effort and voice cast expense on something you're only going to be selling at $4.99? Clearly you think there's enough of a demand for it to pay to make it... so why not pay a little more, make a better quality game, and sell it at a higher price? :cyduck

It makes about as much sense to me as that stupid-looking DC Street Fighter type game. :grumble

WOW if Microsoft is not able to get some positiv press for the Xbox720 soon they might convince me to change camps to Sony or go back to PC Gaming.

I am not 100% sure if the whole always online thing is annoying me that much since I am just 1% of all my gaming time offline but there should be at least somekind of option to activate a game with your cell phone if you are at a place without a local internet connection like grand mother's house.

The whole no used games discussion does not really affect me since I do not really buy used games but my friends will be pissed since I am the one who normally buys and plays the games first and then borrows them to my buddies.

Microsoft might really make the same mistakes like Sony did on the last generation.

Yeah I've been watching things too. Not super closely but close enough.

I don't care about the always online thing either, but I think they are stupid to think that everyone always has a connection. I know that I have cable internet (when I'm back in Canada at least), and when the cable goes down for some reason the first thing I am likely to do if I can't watch TV is to throw a game in, but if the cable is off, then so is the internet.

And I really dislike the no used games issue. I don't buy a lot of them, but I do buy games that are sort of on my second tier of interest. Games I might just try, but I won't shell out $60-70 for them.

I don't know what the price breakdown is like on a game, but if they can bring down the price of a new game to like $30-40 (probably not realistic) then I wouldn't care as much.

Guess we'll all just have to wait and see.

OK I am a Microsoft Fanboy. I admit it upfront here ;)

I liked what I saw yesterday but not for the reasons I was looking forward to this presentation.

The Xbox One is not ugly but it is indeed a BOX :)

I hoped that Microsoft would show some actual gameplay of next generation games that I would love to play but they did not show that as well.

They spent a good deal of time with sports in TV and Games and I did not really give a damn to be honest.

They showed TV Services that will not work in some parts of the US and most likely never make it to Europe/Germany with the same amount of content.

OK I can do Skype with the Xbox now... meh. If I can do Hangouts count me in.

So I got a bunch of stuff that I really did not care about at all but I was still pretty much sold in the end because they showed:

Tabing between games, movies and apps on my console. I play a lot of games on the second playthrough with a laptop infront of me for achievement hunts. Now I can tab to the built in IE. So my favorite feature from Battlefield 3: the Battlelog could be implemented on the Xbox One... AWESOME!

But how do I control my box then? With voice commands and kinect gestures that actually make sense and look natural: Pointing, swiping, dragging and pulling.

Kinect is now using active infrared and therefore is able to work in the dark. So I do not have to lite my living room like the set of a JJ Abrams movie? AWESOME!

Kinect is so accurate now that it can track my fingers and eyes, recognize my mood and measure my pulse. That's great because I had my two best experiences with kinect doing sports and playing Zombie Survival Horror Games. The response time is now 60ms so playing hardcore games with this will still have a slight lag.

The controller has no touch pad but they moved the guide button away from the analog sticks so no more accidental guide pop ups in the middle of a MP battle. Plus they added rumble packs into the triggers (LT and RT) so that you can feel the recoil of a gun in the trigger. The icing on the cake is the already high response time being increased by 15%.

And then they showed Steven Spielberg's face that anounced a Halo TV Series. For the Halo Fanboy that I am Xmas came early this moment. The only thing that would have made this better would have been Nathan Fillion and Tricia Helfer on stage anouncing that they would reprise their roles as Seargent Buck and Captain Dare.

Now the less Fanboy me looks back at the press conference and thinks. OK you expected to see a lot more games at Microsoft's press conference but it seems like this press conference was not really aimed at me but the mainstream press and the press got something that Google and Apple tried to sell us for nearly a decade now: An "Apple" TV Box that works (or maybe it does not work).

I honestly expected a device like this (without gaming abilities) to come from Apple at some point. So if MS was only able to build a good Phone and a better Windows 8.

TL: DNR
Oldschool Box and oldschool controllers make me happy and I get a device that "redefines" TV on top of things.

OK Microsoft got trolled by Sony yesterday at E3...

If Microsoft only listened to their fanbase.

If they just changed always online into log in once per month and the used game policy into something everyone understands. I like the share your library with up to 10 family members idea and that you only need one game copy per 2 Xbox One systems if you are playing with "your family" but the whole reselling aspect seems to be really important to a lot of gamers.

So they support used games, demand no online connection, and for $399? That's game, set, and match. Sony have just helped a large percentage of the gaming community decide which next gen console they want, and rightly so. Also, I really appreciated Sony's emphasis on indie games for the PS4, it really helped sell it as the gamer's games console. Highlights of the day for me have been the footage of Watchdogs, Destiny, and Tom Clancy's The Division. I'm not a console gamer anymore, but some of the console-exclusive stuff I saw had me tempted.

Yeah it seems really lilke Sony and Microsoft reversed their positions from last gen. Now Microsoft is trying to sell us an entertainement device and Sony is cheaper and tries to be more hardcore.

I think the $100 diverence will not really make the difference like the 599 and 399 difference between Xbox360 and PS3 at launch. Since every Xbox comes with Kinect but not every PS4 comes with a motion sensor the real price difference is than a lot smaller if you were going to buy the new kinect anyway.

In the end it will come down to games and your friends. Somehow I do not see all the Call of Duty players on Xbox changing camps to Sony where they would have to create new profiles(with Real Names???) and find new people to play with.

Sony really showed player support here and I wonder how the publishers will react to this. The question is if that will mean more exclusive titles for Microsoft in the long run?

But I guess MS will have to eventually abandon its reselling plans although that means that people like me who never buy used games and love the idea that you will never not have to put the disc back into the console after installing it once.

I think the thing that bugs me about Microsoft is that it's getting closer and closer to PC gaming with each iteration. First it was hard drive storage, then online community and netflix and such, and now online is essential, there's one time installation...

I already have an xbox controller for my PC. Aside from the Kinect, a little convenience, and exclusive titles like Halo... would people not be better off spending 400-600 upgrading to a gaming PC? Seems like everything is converging in that direction.

I just read an intresting blogpost that defended MS DRM policy for the first time in a way it actually makes sense. It all comes down to one sentence:

WHAT IF MICROSOFT IS AFRAID OF THE STEAM BOX?

Steam basically has got nearly the same DRM rules like the XBox ONE and once the Steam Box finally joins the next Gen Battle. They would have to compete with Steam sales. Think about it: Publishers love Steam because you can not resell games you bought on Steam. That is why PC gaming has become so cheap during last generation and this is why Gamestop makes no money with trade in PC games. Nobody on the PC complains about Steams DRM anymore so once the Steam Box comes out no one will expect them to do offline distribution as well.

This all makes more sense if you keep in mind that this is happening on the handheld market as well right now:
The handhelds from Nintendo and Sony have to compete against Smartphones that receive their games from the cloud and can't be resold as well. The PS Vita and 3DS can not really compete with the Android and IOS devices with their current business model.

^^Were you going to buy a Xbox One in the first place Droo?

Actually this whole change destroys me and Charley's godfather family plot!

To be fair if Sony came up with a 24h check in rule I would be less worried that I would check in not often enough I would be worried that PSN might not be there to accecpt my check in. I have not forgotten about the PSN downtime from last year and yesterday's "please avoid our firmware update".

The thing is Microsoft tried too hard being Valve by using their system but adding a trade in system that was too hard to communicate.

I still think that Xbox as a brand is still closer to my vision what gaming, multiplayer and multimedia entertainement is about than Sony. I use my Xbox for TV, TV (no Sports) and no Call of Duty but certainly Destiny, Titanfall and whatever Ubisoft does.

I like Smart Glass, I think their controller is closer to what gamers really want than for example the WiiU one and I think no one ever asked for a share button on a gamepad. The Idea of cloud processing sounds like a great idea from my perspective.

I trust in MS vision for Xbox Live since the service is still the best one you can have maybe next to Valve's Steam. Maybe Sony's new streaming purchase will help them to catch up in this department but I highly doubt that this will affect us in europe any time soon.

^^Were you going to buy a Xbox One in the first place Droo?

I followed E3 with the mindset that one of these consoles was a real possibility for me based on the strength of the catalogue of exclusive games they boast (unavailable on PC). If I were to make a choice, it's quite an obvious one to make, based on what I've seen. I now refuse to buy anything from Microsoft anymore, including Windows, and no, that is not just because of the Xbone debacle. They seem to have a genuinely resentful attitude towards the consumer. The thing that stops me from putting my money where my mouth is that I too remember the PSN disaster and I'm hesitant to buy the PS4 until I can be sure the network is in order. For now, I'll just remain a proud member of the PC master race!

So we are actually more on the same page than I assumed. I like the Xbox One Game Catalogue so far but there is no game here that is a system seller and I have not seen the PS4 one last week. Right now I just regret that I do not have a PS3 because of Last of Us and Two Souls.

Destiny sounds badass but that is a multi platform title.

I guess I will buy my next system after E3 next year. The internet forgets fast. So the whole landscape could look completly different next year.

I agree, the war of the consoles won't be decided by pre-orders or Day One sales, there's no doubt about that. It's a marathon, not a sprint; time, performance, and exclusives will decide which one comes out on top in the end. I just think that, this time around, Sony have a head start.

Just been playing BroForce - a game currently in Alpha and looking for love on Steam Greenlight.

Check out the very polished Alpha here (http://www.freelives.net/BROFORCE/BROFORCE_WEB.html). You can play in browser or download the .exe file.

It's a platformer filled with over-the-top action and violence as iconic Hollywood hardmen go up against nameless, numberless terrorists in a love letter to the action movies of the 80's and 90's. With similar gameplay to Metal Slug and pixellated "retro" visuals, there's a lot of charm here, as well as killer music and sound effects. So far I've learned of the following playable characters:

Rambro
Ba Broracus
Brommando
Bro Hard
Brodell Walker
Brade
Bro Dredd
Macbrover
Snake Broskin
Indianna Brones
Brominator
Bro in Black
Robrocop

I also believe there's be vehicular combat in the final release.

The word fanboy annoys the fuck out of me. I'm guilty of using it in the past but I'm doing away with it. It's very easy for people to call others a fanboy just for simply liking something that they don't. Just been reading a discussion on the Steam community about someone who initially didn't like the look of Saints Row 4 - they mentioned being suspended from the Bungie forums for speaking out against Halo Reach, stating that there were loads of people who disagreed with him, namely "blinded fanboys". I got really annoyed when I read that. Just because he didn't like the game and found plenty at fault with it, he reduced the people who really liked the game to "blinded fanboys" instead of what they really were - people who had played the game and seen it with their all-seeing perfectly-fuctional eyes and thought "Fuck yeah, this game rocks!"

Everyone is a fanboy of at least something. If you like something, guess what? You're a fanboy of that thing! If someone likes something you don't like, they're a fanboy of it and you're not. It has a very negative connotation and is used far too commonly in that context. I feel it's something that should be done away with! I'm boycotting the word! It's a very belittling, dismissive thing to say in an attempt to try and disregard something someone says about something you may not like or be interested in yourself.

There was an article I read yesterday about Greatest Video Game characters and Solid Snake was in there somewhere, not the Top Ten. Someone posted a very self-righteous response saying it was fact, not opinion, that Snake was the best and should be number one. To read it, you'd think the guy was really worked up and it felt like a serious opinion rather than a joke. Maybe it was, I'll never know. But at that point I was thinking "Fanboy" as much as I consider myself a Snake fan. There are people out there who you could say deserve that kind of labelling for the sheer ridiculousness of their views, but it's often seen as an all-encompassing term to refer to a group of people who likely aren't all as blindly loyal and narrow-minded as the likes of that guy I mentioned. It wouldn't surprise me if Michael Bay called everyone who hated his idea for the new TMNT movie (a la aliens) "fanboys". In that case, I wouldn't say we all ARE fanboys, but rather he most certainly is not. He's the one deserving of the name-calling

By all means, love your favourite things, tell people how much you love them. But at least acknowledge other people's opinions about those very things and be considerate about their own. Don't be so closed off. Don't dismiss another persons views in an effort to assert your own no matter how superior you may think you are. You're only denying yourself the possibility of finding something new to love. And if you find out you don't love it - just agree to disagree without making a twat of yourself and starting a flame war.

I've kinda rambled on a bit there but I wanted to get it off my chest and see what you lot think of the who situation. Us modern, film-loving, game-playing, jacked-in internet types are an extremely passionate bunch of bastards and the discussions and diverse opinions are great. But there's lots of nobheads out there who spit their dummy out at the first sign of a disagreement and I just want to say to them "Hey mate, relax. You're on the internet - there's almost 2.5 Billion people hanging out on here! Chances are someone somewhere will disagree with you. Just try not to call them a dickhead when they do...

...unless they call you one first"

There's currently a Kickstarter for a sci-fi sandbox MMO called The Repopulation (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/therepopulation/the-repopulation-a-sandbox-mmorpg) - harking back to the freeform gameplay of Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online where social aspects were much stronger and non-combat gameplay could be focused on as a primary activity and not as a way to enhance your combat role.

With almost $45,000 in the bank, they're not far from being funded at 23 days to go. So you may not want/need to pledge any money but if you are tempted, take a look at the stretch goals to help decide if you want to aid their progress.

In today's gaming world of themepark MMO's it's quite exciting to see something so open and malleable.
