February 20, 2010 - Rumor has it that Cap has been cast.

Both IESB and Screenrant point out a (now missing) article at Comic Book Movie that claims TV actor Robert Buckley has landed the title role in Marvel's forthcoming movie The First Avenger: Captain America.

We checked all over ComicBookMovie.com and couldn't find the existing article, while the link provided by IESB didn't work as of end of day PST Saturday. So we must caution you that this story should be deemed rumor until reported otherwise. The film's director, Joe Johnston, recently said the role of Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, would be cast by the end of this month.

Buckley, a 28 year-old native Californian, has appeared on TV series such as One Tree Hill, Lipstick Jungle, American Heiress and Fashion House. According to the IMDB, Buckley stands 6'2" and is a model-turned-actor.

The First Avenger: Captain America begins filming this summer in London.

That's probably the twelfth rumour this week, so I'd take it with a pinch of salt. I've heard everyone from Jensen Ackles to Awesome from Chuck being rumoured for it... so I wouldn't count your chickens until we actually start getting set photos...

Yeah I have heard a lot of rumors like that so I think we will have to wait longer to find out who it will be.

I don't think it is, but it could be. I think he is a great choice. I could see him being the Red Skull.

He has a lot of experience acting from behind a mask. Makes sense as a casting choice to me. :):thumbup

Surprised to find a clever comment underneath the article...

But how will Weaving speak his lines when his character has no lips?

Now they need to find a Captain American. It looks like they are going with an unknown based on the current rumors.

I hope they cast Jon Hamm.

He's not rumored as in the running, but he's perfect. I'm concerned at all the 20 yr old actors they're considering. :\

Well they have been looking at older actors now, the rumors say the top three right now are
Chris Evans (he is a good actor but he did play The Human Torch)
Ryan Philippe (probably best actor they have considered)
Channing Tatum (I am against him, he can't act even if he has the look)

Ryan Philippe has such a baby face. :(

Chris Evans is a good choice, though weird he was once the Human Torch. Of course those films were so bad I have forgotten them. He was one of the bright spots of those films.

bleeeeergh - I am willing to overlook the Human Torch thing because he was so good in Sunshine.

I think he's still too young. However, I'm sure the casting people know what they're doing.

I hope. :ohno

I'm glad of casting Chris Evans - it further distances those Fantastic Four movies from the "Avengers" continuity that Marvel Movies is working on. And there are rumours of a new F4 film being worked on by Marvel, so we should wind up with a new (and hopefully better) team.

As long as he can tone it down some on the humor scale, Cap was always more serious but he has the looks and acting chops to do it. Lets not forget Cap started as a regular young guy in WW2 so you can't say he's too young, he's exactly the right age for it.

I've only ever seen Chris Evans as the Human Torch and in Not Another Teen Movie. What else has he been in that is decent?

Sunshine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/). You must see. Immediately!!

Especially if you think he's too 'funny' for the role - he's got the acting chops for this.

And the problem is they're not just casting for this movie, they're casting for the Avengers movies too and so Cap'n America should be older. But I'm sure that's just nitpicking at this point.

Isn't Evans almost 30? So I don't think he is too young.

Has anyone seen Push, and was it any good? I know Ming-Na was in it with Chris and Dakota Fanning... Not sure if I should bother checking it out or not.

Push was good. I seem to remember it feeling a little long, though.

:uhoh Its been a while since I watched it.

I have to admit, after Sunshine I saw him in a completely different light. That's such a brilliant film.

I enjoyed Push as well, fun movie.

Captain America was frozen from WW2 to current time so he doesn't age, hence he's still the perfect age for the character. Cap's is a natural leader and he will have to pull that off regardless of age.

I cast Summon Bigger Fish ... err, I mean Thread Necromancy. :p

I saw it today and thought it was pretty good. It was a better film than Thor but I liked X-Men First class better. Hugo Weaving played a great Red Skull and Tommy Lee Jones was great in it as well. I liked Evans as Captain America he did a really good job playing the part.

It was decently fun, but I probably wouldn't have bothered if not for the Avengers movie build-up. There's a high camp factor that you just have to decide you're willing to accept, but unfortunately you also have to accept shallow plotting and the "just because!" school of military tactics. How did those reinforcements conveniently get behind enemy lines? Why does mounting the shield on his handlebars protect Cap's entire bike from enemy fire? How come he has to surrender to this group of bad guys when he just dismantled a seemingly larger group moments before?

I think I pulled something suspending my disbelief that long, much like when I watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The difference is that Indy 4 was boring and this wasn't. If you're in the right mood, then Cap's golden-age sensibilities and the equally sincere performances of the rest of the cast will level out the dumbed-down script. If not, you'll probably hate it. There's a self-aware kitschiness to the banter, the action sequences, and the scenery-chewing villainy of Hugo Weaving that you'll either consider part of the fun or wince-inducing. The fact that it's self-aware doesn't change the fact that there's little substance to the characters and none at all to the plot.

As an episode on the way to the big Avengers movie, I think it's fine - in the same ballpark as Thor. As a standalone movie, it's incredibly forgettable. Overall I enjoyed it, but I'm not in a hurry to see it again, and if the Avengers can't rise above this level, the whole arc will frankly be a disappointment.
