“War has always raged through this galaxy of ours. Artifacts from scores and millennia ago and earlier tell tales of conflicts of scales unbelievable even in the current age. Many times in history has the gruesome sin of the bloody killing of one sentient of another been thought to be erased from existence.”

Staccato whines of blaster fire pierced silent halls and their anger scored black furrows in once immaculate halls. Occasionally the chilling scream of a disruptor foretold a horrific loss of life or the raucous thunder of grenades flayed limbs from bodies.

And yet even more sinister sounds threatened to shake the resolve of even the most stalwart of minds. But the combatants held faith in their cause and in this house of horrors the only fear that could be found stemmed from those forced to listen from deep within the charnel house.

“The old republic foolishly thought the same thing over and over and several times over twenty thousand years. And in their misplaced ideals they several times had to claw themselves from the pit of defeat. And each time they became more and more blind.”

A figure clad in a skin-tight bodysuit, human in shape, skittered along ferrocrete floors on all fours. As it raced it bounded from wall to ceiling to wall again as it danced around the torrent of blaster fire desperately trying to hit the monstrosity. With shocking speed it crossed the distance and leapt into the thick of black-armored soldiers attempting to kill it. Limbs flashed out with lightning speed, hacking and slashing with knives and metallic claws. The creature cut its way through half a dozen soldiers before a hail of fire managed to down it.

“Then Emperor came along and realized the true state of things. That peace could never hope to exist. He came with warships and massive armies and crushed his opposition while playing his cause as righteous. And what do you know, it actually worked. When reality was accepted, war and fear could actually be used to maintain order and happiness of the majority.”

Plasteel and ferrocrete hurtled through the air as a proton charge blasted a hole into what looked like a command and control center. More of the black soldiers poured into the chamber with portable shield generators mounted upon their forearms to ward of defending shots from warriors dressed identically to themselves. As they closed the gap the shields deactivated and the attackers advanced with swords and sidearms. In an instant order broke into a chaotic melee with no clear winner in sight.

“And with the eyes of the galaxy accustomed to watching the galactic war, no one notices local conflicts or hidden fighting on backwater worlds more savage than that brought to bear by the Empire and her enemies. Perfect for our cause, not even the Empire’s masters will notice this conflict. Unwanted attention will prove devastating to our existence.”

Under a beating sun and surrounded by ramparts and rocky crags two figures engaged in a feverish duel. A man and a woman each wielding the forbidden energy blades known as lightsabers struggled to cut their opponent to pieces. As they battled more armored soldiers fought all about them, some clad in massive suits of power armor toting massive energy and kinetic weapons while shrugging off horrendous amounts of damage that would have decimated whole squads of troopers. And above them the sky burned with laser fire of defensive guns and orbiting warships.

“Be assured that our cause is just and that we are fighting for a better future. Not just for the Imperium, but the galaxy. Sagas will not be told of our exploits and no one will hail us as heroes. We will be cursed as demons and traitors as we curse them....”

In momentary lapse the male combatant left a small opening and the woman’s saber cleaved deep into his flesh. Without breaking stride she followed up with a swift strike cleanly separating her rival’s head from his body. A brief respite gave the woman enough time to look about her. Soldiers clad in black dress violently hacked and slashed while others burned and disintegrated their own. Both sides displayed the blood-red heraldry of the Inquisitor.

The look on the female Inquisitor’s face said one thing.

This should not be happening.
