I tend to rate these nearly on par with the Oscars as far as prestige. The Brits often award films/performances that don't win the Oscar, but usually they're a decent indicator of what might have support(plus something like 5-6 hundred BAFTA members are also in the AMPAS).

EDIT: I should have looked harder. Stupid Animated films getting a separate category.

While Avatar deserves the nomination, I really hope it doesn't win best picture.

The animated films that were nominated are just so different from each other. And two are stop motion! Sort of amazing.

Just finished watching the Lovely Bones.... (had some trouble finding it over here)

I'd say give it to Saoirse Ronan (and no, I'm not biased :p)

The only award in which I'd invested any interest was that for supporting actor, because I think Christoph Waltz truly deserves recognition for his sensational performance. And he won! Bring on the Oscars!

The most deserving of the nominees. This appears to be the first time in a several years where my #1 will win the BP Oscar.

Rising Star award to Kristen Stewart? Hm. Almost every review I've read of the Twilight series complains that she does nothing but pout through every frame. :\

That was voted for by the public, I think - so the Twilight fans would have hammered the poll.

I am not sure about that yet. The ten nominee thing will put a monkey wrench into I have a feeling. Although I wasn't that impressed with Hurt Locker, I wouldn't put in the top 5 for me. Still, will be depressing that it would be the lowest grossing film ever to win BP.

Other than the fact that you didn't like the film(which I disagree with you over obviously) why is it upsetting that a low grossing film wins? Historically the Academy picks hits, but there are alot of great movies that don't do gang busters at the boxoffice.

If there's an upset, I don't see Avatar being the candidate....look to Inglorious Basterds - it has alot of buzz around town.

Inglorious Basterds is a far better film than Hurt Locker can pretend to be - and I dont mind Hurt Locker. I honestly agree with JMC there's a good handful of movies that are obviously better - District 9 frankly would be my choice. And surprisingly..... I honestly thought Up in the Air was bloody brilliant when it's in no way a movie I ever thought I would enjoy.

Inglourious Basterds was a really weak film. Admittedly there were a few things I loved about it but it's certainly my least favourite of Tarantino's, in fact, I'd have probably lost interest halfway through were it not for the anticipation of every Christoph Waltz scene. Sadly, I still haven't seen the Hurt Locker or a lot of films this year.

Inglorious Basterds was pretty good, but I wouldn't say it was one of the top 15 movies I saw last year. Waltz was birlliant however.

I enjoyed District 9 more than IB, but I would rate Star Trek over it if we're just discussing scifi - much less overall.

I was a huge fan of Up in the Air, and wouldn't mind it pulling off a upset victory at the Oscars. But Hurt Locker is the best film of the year IMHO. I guess if it loses the Oscar at least it's won alot of these other honors.

It's definitely a film that will be remembered either way

Did anyone else watch the ceremony? I found Vanessa Redgrave's speech quite moving
