Here I go again, much thanks to Yog for figuring out a better list of movies for us to pick from. :D

Pick one!

Memento had a 2001 release in the States tho. Hell it was in the Oscars for 2002(meaning the 2001 movie year).

That was a much tougher list to choose from, but I still picked the same.

Tough to pick between Chocolat and Requiem for a Dream. Though I absolutely loathed the latter, it's so critically-acclaimed and well done. It's supposed to make you feel awful and maybe it did that job too well, because that leads me to pick Chocolat, which was just a lovely little film.

It is listed as a 2000 release at IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209144/) for some reason. I guess IMDB is not infallible, and neither am I. :)

Chocolat is a loathesome turd that is a prime reason why arty farty cinema should be nuked from orbit. Requiem is good but oy is it depressing, you really feel liek committing suicide in despair.

Memento is a absolute mile better, but Crouching Kitty, Hidden flamethrower was a hair better.

:p I'm not redoing it again, we'll just have to pretend Memento came out in 2000. ;)

And I aaaaalmost picked Snatch as my favorite. Certainly its my second favorite of the year. A lot of good movies!

But it did...???? Released in Europe for October 2000. So I'd say you have it right and Bffffffft to USA release dates!

Requiem was actually the indie artsy movie you know, both in style and budget. Chocolat was a pretty classically told story with a modest, but not ridiculously small, budget.

Yeah, I mean there's nothing really avant garde or absurd about Chocolat. It's just a sweet little story.

I was actually very tempted to pick Requiem for a Dream because it made such a major impression to me that I won't forget. The whole thing with manipulating the camera / visual effects to make it appear you're inside the head of a drug addict is absolutely brilliant. It is without question the best movie portraying drug use. It is also a very sad movie having emotional resonance. I picked Gladiator though for overall merits, terrific cinematography and acting, editing, visuals, soundtrack etc. Very epic feel to that movie. It is one of those years I agreed with the Academy awards in picking the winner.

Ultimately, I went with the one that had the biggest impact on me at the time and that was Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. And now that I think of it, it really is quite emotionally affecting:

That last scene between Yu Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai is heart-breaking. When he finally confesses his feelings:

"I would rather be a ghost drifting by your side as a condemned soul than enter heaven without you. Because of your love, I will never be a lonely spirit."

So on top of having top-notch action it also had plenty of heart and the artistry that went into making it, the cinematography and music in particular, was sublime. Whereas Gladiator, I really don't get it. It looks great, sounds great, etc. etc. but my God, is it boring. I just don't get it, I wanted whatshisname to get ate by lions right away, yeah he was a figure of tragedy but he was so boring! I'll never get it. Ever. You're all wrong and are going to hell for giving that film your money and your votes! :verymad

Just because sometimes there was a tragic mistake and something good comes out of arty farty doesnt mean it still shouldnt be nuked from orbit :D - NOTHING excuses things like Chocolat or.....

Just wait for 2001's poll (or whenever), the roasting Ameile will get will be awesome.

Mememto was also an art house release, as was CTHD for that matter. Tho CTHD eventually got in the mainstream cinemas - Memento never did. I had to drive half an hour outside of my hometown to a place that showed it.

If anything Chocolat was never a true art house film despite its slow expansion. It was always meant to be seen in the main theaters - Weinstein just platformed it out.

Chocolat - wanted to check it out never did and still haven't totally forgot about the film until this poll.

Gladiator - Great movie a little uncomfortable to watch with your grandparents in the room.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Never saw due to frakking subtitles. >_< I cant read and watch at the same time.

Erin Brockovich - Meh

Requiem for a Dream - Oddly a great movie except for the fact I fell asleep half threw it the first three times I watched.

Traffic - meh

Memento - Meh

Snatch - out all these movies I only own this one and Requiem. This is the only one out of those two that I can say i enjoy watching over and over again.

Cast Away - Meh

Love's a Bitch - Never saw it.

It's a tough call between Gladiator and Crouching Tiger for me. I went with Gladiator in the end, mainly because I got bored the first time I watched Tiger; probably because of how old (or rather young) I was at the time. Gladiator on the other hand never fails to grab or captivate me: probably the genius stroke of putting an epic battle at the beginning. :mischief

You should be able to watch it dubbed on the DVD. I did the first time, because I was too tired to read when I first watched it. I ordinarily wouldn't advise it (it's like anime; always better in the original language), but if you're the kind of person who doesn't get along with subtitles... *shrug* It's a good enough movie to be worth giving it a go, anyhow.

^^That's what I love about the publishers for anime in Germany
They always get great voice actors for German dubbs like nearly the entire LOTR voice cast for Records of Lodoss War and Johny Depp's voice for Mugen in Samurai Champloo and Spike in Cowboy Bebop.

Unfortunately the guys who dubbed the SW prequels are the worst voice actors ever.

There's nothing wrong with the dubbing in the UK/US/elsewhere: the main issue is them cutting out or changing parts of the story in order to protect the poor, sensitive little children. Quite often the guns are removed, or blood, or stuff like that; the language is rewritten, etc.

Apparently, Full Metal Alchemist is the only one where the English dub version is "as good" as the original Japanese; everything else is second rate by comparison. At least, that's what my new cute anime-fan friends tell me. :mischief
