First in a series of polls. We'll take the top ten movies of every year this decade, decide on the Sw-Fans favorite, then have a final poll to determine the overall favoritest movie of the decade!

Ok, here we go with the movies of the Year 2000...

Unfortunately the best movie of the year didn't break into the top ten earners - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But such is the nature of using the top ten at the box office for the polls. So, know that its imperfect, but really this is the simplest way for me to decide on ten movies for the year without just picking ten that I liked. :angel

A better way is using movies from the IMDB top 250 (http://www.imdb.com/chart/top) and Academy Award BP nominees (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Picture#Winners_and_nominee s). Most of these movies are not even in the same league as Gladiator.

Edit: For example, for the year 2000, simply put the 5 BP nominees (Gladiator, Chocolat, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Erin Brockovich, Traffic) and the top rated movies at the IMDB 250 list from that year (Requiem for a Dream (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180093/), Memento (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209144/), Snatch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0208092/), Love's a bitch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245712/), and any remaining movies that did not make the top 250 from the box office (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2000&p=.htm) that is not completely terrible (in this case, I guess it's Cast Away, because who can seriously say The Grinch is better?). If you want to be completely unbiased, put Grinch as the comedy option.

Then you would have this list of top 10 nominees from 2000, with no bias to what you like, and easy to put together, and it would be a million times better list:

Gladiator
Chocolat
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dagon
Erin Brockovich
Traffic
Requiem for a Dream
Memento
Snatch
Love's a bitch
Cast Away

I'm appreciative of you doing this for us, Holly, but if we go by Box Office success alone we'll be choosing only from films which were commercial successes, maybe some have critical acclaim too, but seriously, we'll get to the point in which the likes of Transformers 2 will be one of the options. I like Yog's idea and also there are lists like this (http://www.empireonline.com/features/reviewofthedecade/films-of-the-decade/) which might inspire potential options.

Also we have to be careful about the Oscar nominations, because strictly speaking the Oscars are really the awards for films from the previous year.

I should emphasize that I, like Droo, also really appreciate Holly putting these lists together.

I just think box office is a terrible indicator for quality, and to what people appreciate as their favorite movies. For example, in the 90's, many people would say Schindler's List was their favorite movie of the decade. In fact, it is the #9 on the AFI top 100 list of the century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI's_100_Years…100_Movies) and it is #6 on the IMDB list. It won 7 Oscars, another 63 wins & 21 nominations, and is widely considered Spielberg's masterpiece. Would you believe that movie barely cracked the top 10 box office in 93?

and also there are lists like this (http://www.empireonline.com/features/reviewofthedecade/films-of-the-decade/) which might inspire potential options.
That would work well too, and is even easier. Probably even better, because it requires no thought at all.

Except it fails woefully in that there's not a single LOTR film in there. :\

Edit - after some further thought, the Empire list makes it confusing because they don't seem consistent in ranking what year a movie was in. For example, they list Toy Story 2 and American Beauty as 2000's movies, yet they rank Gladiator the same year (and they rank it as #10?). Some of their rankings are bizarre. And then they have really glaring omissions, some that Droo mentioned. I'd recommend just sticking with what I originally proposed. I'll even make lists based on that method for you. :)

(ok, so the last one is tough, because the oscar nominations are not until february 2nd. Using combination of IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/chart/2000s) and box office (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2009&view=releasedate&view2=domestic&sort=gross&order=DESC&&p=.htm) for the time being. What makes it further complicated, there are 10 BP nominees this year.)

(I'm also certain Hurt Locker will be nominated for BP, I guess you could swap that for Monsters Vs. Aliens. It also has a 8.0 IMDB average and just needs some more votes to break 250 anyway)

(also replaced In Bruges with Iron Man, because it is almost the same IMDB rating, yet there are no other movies that year picked based on box office, so..)

For 2000, based on all options Chocolat. Based on the poll given to me, Gladiator

I would change a few of them I think Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has to be in 2004. It was one of the top rated films of that year. Not sure what to replace it with it maybe Der Untergang or Kill Bill 2. Also Spiderman 2 should be in that year as well.
