Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard's army against the French. Upon Richard's death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion, a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.
Okay, so. I'm a big fan of the 1991 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' with Kevin Costner as Hood and Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham, so, I don't know. I mean, I'm tempted, but...

Thoughts?

P.S. - I do so like Russell Crowe and William Hurt.

I think this looks extremely generic. Plus Russel Crowe reminds me of his cardboard cutout role from Gladiator in this so... yaaaaawn!

The trailer doesn't look good. It reminds me of Kingdom of Heaven which gives me bad vibes.

It does incredibly make me think of Gladiator a bit. Before I even watched it, finding that Russell Crowe was in it and... you know, the groan came when you see him coming up out of the water, screaming, sword in hand.

Um, no thanks.

Russell Crowe as a Roman officer I can believe because he's built in that way.

Russell Crowe as an arrow-slinger? I don't think so.

I will wait to rent it on DvD or Blu ray to be honest the trailer just didn't excite or interest me in anyway.

I love Robin Hood but this has to be one of the strangest and most inappropriate pieces of casting in a long while. Russel Crowe is probably as far in my mind from being Robin Hood as anyone I can think of :\

Um...er...I like the Robin Hood legend, but this isn't lighting my fire at all. It reminds me of King Arthur with Clive Owen and Keira Knightley...I understood what they were trying to do with it, but it ended up being a really flat and boring movie. So right now this is nothing more than a possible rental for me.

Did anyone here see BBC's wonderful Robin Hood series that just finished its 3 season run? Yes, it was full of anachronisms and fiddled with the legend, but it was so gloriously entertaining and fun. The final season, with Guy of Gisbourne's redemption as a big part of the story, was great. And the series had a truly loathesomely hilarious Sheriff of Nottingham.

As for Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, outside of Alac Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham, I thought that was a really bad movie with even worse miscasting than this new one :evil.

I liked Prince of Thieves for the pure entertainment value. At least that movie was fun and Rickman was amazing. Freeman did a good job with what he was given.

The Disney Robin Hood is really good too. :D

Yeah, this seems very generic. It does not even feel like Robin Hood to me. I like Russell Crowe's movies though, and trailers fooled me before, so who knows. I'll probably check out the DVD, but this is definitely not something I want to go see in a theater at this point.

Yeah, this is the main thing I got from the trailer. As much as I like Crowe, he is no Robin Hood.

The original script called for Russell Crowe to be both Robin Hood AND the Sheriff of Nottingham.

The Sheriff by day, and Robin Hood by night. That's thankfully been tossed out, but even knowing he signed on when that was even CONSIDERED makes me want to avoid the living daylights out of this mess.

Russel Crowe is just too... brooding and serious to be Robin Hood, for me. He should be a dashing quick-witted rogue, not some lumbering oaf punching his way through Sherwood forest on the way to bloody vengeance.

I prefer Errol Flynn to Kevin Costner :D

Fabulous. One more vehicle for Russel Crowe's favorite acting technique of "SMASH NOW".

I not only groaned at the whole coming out of the water with the sword thing, I had to resist the urge to gouge out my eyes.

Robin Hood as a muscled maniac indeed. *snorts* It would have been epically better if they'd cast the guy from the BBC series in the lead. At least he looks the part, being more lean and wiry.

Kevin Costner is a smarmosaurus. :p

I totally watch Prince of Thieves just for the bit about cutting hearts out with a spoon. :lol

"But why a spoon, cousin?"

"Because it'll hurt more, you idiot."

"But why a spoon, cousin?"

"Because it'll hurt more, you idiot."

Nottingham: I'll cut his heart out with a spoon!

Guy: Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an axe?

Nottingham: Because it's dull, you twit. It'll hurt more.

...I hear Alan Rickman saying it in my head, every time I think about that scene. It's wonderful.

I love these lines too
Sheriff of Nottingham: Wait a minute. Robin Hood steals money from my pocket, forcing me to hurt the public, and they love him for it?
[Scribe nods]
Sheriff of Nottingham: That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas.

I do see Nottingham isn't really in the film. Probably figure nobody could match Rickman as that character.

I too loved that series. It didn't take itself too seriously but there was drama and character and it was all such good fun. Your points are true with regards to some of the liberties they take but they did so to make it as entertaining as possible and I'm fine with that. Sadly I haven't seen the second half of season two or three but I'm not too fussed about spoilers, it didn't take me long to figure out there was a character missing at the start of season three! :cry

And Keith Allen as the Sheriff was just genius. :D

Anyway, that's not why I did a spot of necromancy here. A new trailer is out and I have to admit, it sells the film much better than the first one. I'm still not sold on Russell Crowe in this role and something tells me the Sheriff won't be half as charismatic as his other incarnations but nevertheless, the production looks excellent and the cast is quite nice. I think it might be one of those films I'd go in with a big bucket of popcorn and come out surprised at getting a bit more than just action and adventure.

The movie is good and I really liked it but I am looking forward to the director's cut.

Just make sure to keep in mind that this is just the begining of the legend of Robin Hood.

If you like Kingdom of Heaven you will like this one too.
