Does Hurt Locker have a chance at Oscar? I was thinking it was between Precious, Avatar, and Up in the Air. If Hurt Locker won it would be the lowest grossing best picture winner.

It does seem way too small to actually win BP. The film only played in the major markets, and didn't gross much at all. Oscar never goes for films that are THAT small. Despite people always complaining that the Academy only goes for obscure stuff, BP winners are usually among the tiop 10 grossers of the year(and certainly top 20).

On the other hand the Academy often appreciates a good war movie. And The Hurt Locker is probably the best depction we'll ever see of what the Iraqi war was like.

The lack of appreciation for the best movie of the year aka District 9 is very disappointing.

Of course, it being the Iraq war probably hurts it since most people, especially Hollywood tend to shy away from anything to do with that war. I think it will be tough for it, of course this ten nominee thing is going to be nuts.

I hope Christoph Waltz gets the award for best supporting role because I really loved to hate this guy and this is the best compliment that you can give to any movie villan.

Let's be honest tho...most Iraq war movies haven't really been about the war itself. They've been about the homefront, or about politics, or whatever. This is definitely a "what it feels like on the ground" type of movie. Plus, it's almost more of a thriller than anything with the constant worrying of - will the bomb squad have enough time to diffuse everything.

I agree with this. It is pretty much the ultimate Iraq war drama, and that is amazing because it usually takes a decade or two before someone comes up with a classic. That being said, there have been some great films, but they were documentaries.

I think it's a lock for BP nominee. Like you, I still have many movies to see, but I think it will be hard to budge out of my top 10.

The lack of appreciation for the best movie of the year aka District 9 is very disappointing.District 9 is a fantastic movie in many ways, but Moon is better, as is Hurt Locker, IMO. It's a great year for sci fi between Moon, District 9, Surrogates and I hope Avatar which I'll go to see this sunday.

I am happy about Dexter and True Blood btw.

Edit: NOT happy about Max Manus (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029235/) not making the foreign language cut.

I think Robert Downey Jr's win surprised me the most. Loved seeing Jeff Bridges win, and I'm glad that John Lithgow won for his work on Dexter - he was really amazing this season.

Apparently if you listen to the coverage here, there was only one Golden Globe given out and it was to some bint no one cares about anymore.

Oh and a picture of Halle Berry showing off a spectaclar set of norks.

Hurt Locker and Up in the Air took just about all of the early critic prizes. Does the Avatar win signify a change in the race? The Hollywood Foreign Press used to be a pretty good indicator of what the Academy might go for, but in recent years they've gone their own way more often than not.

Nice win for Avartar tho...no matter what happens the rest of the Awards season it already won a pretty big award.

Best Actress is gonna be a fascinating race from here of out with Streep and Bullock each appearing very strong. I think the supporting races are sewn up, and Bridges seems safe after his hearty standing O.

Time to see what the Guilds and the British Academy recognize. Those are the best bellweathers IMHO for what the AMPAS eventually recognizes. (I'd argue that winning a BAFTA is just as prestigious as Oscar - especially looking at some of their winners which are better, IMHO, a good percentage of the time)

Couldn't agree more. One of the single most enjoyable performances I've seen from an actor; rates up there with Hopkin's Hannibal Lecter, Day-Lewis's Daniel Plainview and Ledger's Joker. If he doesn't get the Oscar I'll eat my hat!

Cristoph Waltz would indeed be a worthy winner, and probably the favorite for male actor. I hope however your hat is tasty, because I would not be shocked if Morgan Freeman wins it for Invictus, or George Clooney for Up in the Air.

But they're in different categories? Waltz is a supporting category

Oh right, I forgot about that. I thought he was in the Male Actor category for some reason. That raises the chances for Christoph Waltz dramatically, even though I really enjoyed Matt Damon in Invictus and Woody Harrelson in The Messenger, and I have not seen the other nominees in supporting actor .

What is the word in Oscar buzz circles. Is he considered a lock?

CMJ
Jan 18th, 2010, 03:59:42 PM
Both of the Supporting categories are considered locks.
