Considering that The Shining is one of my favorite Stephen King novels, this news excites me A LOT. I would LOVE to see what Danny's life turned out to be after his experiences at the Overlook Hotel :evil.

STEPHEN KING has thrilled horror fans by announcing he has started work on a sequel to his most famous book - THE SHINING.

The 1977 novel was adapted for the big screen three years later and the film, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson, became a cult classic.

King confirmed he is writing a follow-up during an appearance in Toronto, Canada this week (beg23Nov09) and revealed the story will be set 40 years later and focus on the lead character Jack Torrance's son Danny.

The sequel is tentatively titled Doctor Sleep.

But King admits he's nervous about writing a follow-up to his best known story, joking to the crowd, "Maybe if I keep talking about it I won't have to write it."

P.S. I guess this makes me a heretic to some people, but I can't stand Kubrick's movie version of the novel.

Heretic!

Did you like the TV miniseries version (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118460/) better?

I don't care for Kubrick's version either. I didn't like how it became more about Jack than the house being the evil force. Now the TV miniseries wasn't great either. To me there hasn't been a good version of that book. As for the sequel it will be interesting to see where he goes with it.

I thought the miniseries version was closer to the book than Kubrick's version, although it still wasn't that great either.

I'll just pretend I didn't read someone critisizing Stanley Kubrick and move quickly on!

Somehow the Shining seems to be the one King book I missed when I was in high school and reading everything dark, dreadfully scary I could possibly find in the library.

The Kubrik Shinnin' rocks. Maybe after I finish my current book I'll pick it up and finally see what the fuss is between the two.
