Aw, crap. (http://postgazette.com/pg/09287/1005355-100.stm) :(

There goes the best run-stopping end in the league. The last time Aaron Smith went out, the Steelers defense became very vulnerable to the run, to the tune of over 150 yards a game. This is potentially worse than missing Polamalu. I just hope rookie Ziggy Hood can step up in Smith's absence...

The Saints look really impressive. The Giants can't stop Brees 34-17 at halftime. The Saints could score 60 if they keep this up.

Another TD by Brees. The Giants haven't had a very hard schedule so far; their biggest test was the Cowboys, who certainly haven't been at the top of their form this season; still, I expected their defense to perform a lot better than this. I think we can call Brees a lock for Hawaii, barring injury.

The Steelers and Browns are trading turnovers right now; five consecutive drives have ended in giveaways. Good thing the Browns receivers still can't catch the ball... All the Steelers need to do is contain Joshua Cribbs, who is the only good player Cleveland has.

Houston's looking good in Cincinnati. The Bengals D has not been able to disrupt Matt Schaub, and they haven't been able to contain Slaton on screen plays; Slaton and Andre Johnson each have over 100 yards receiving. Cincy's been utterly shut down in the second half.

The NY-NO game was one that was hard for me to pick. I wished I'd gone for my first impulse and picked the Saints. Wow, they're looking really, really impressive today.

Well Brees might not be a lock for Hawaii if the Saints go the SB. Looks like the Chiefs will get their first win beating the Redskins 14-6 with less than 30 seconds to go. Zorn will probably be fired after the game.

Me, too. The thing is, when you have a high-powered offense like the Saints, the only way to stop it is to play aggressive, physical defense, which the Giants can usually do. But the Saints aren't just finessing the Giants, they're blowing them off the ball. This isn't just a pretty offense, it's a dominant football team.

Ben Roethlisberger is having a banner day. Despite an anemic running game hovering around 100 yards, he's thrown for 417 yards and two TDs. The Steelers' strength on offense is the passing game this year, and it's a good one with Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Mike Wallace, and Heath Miller leading the way. Still, I really wish they could recover their ground superiority. Anyway, it's more than enough to beat the hapless Browns. 12 in a row for the Steelers over Cleveland!

Wow, the Ravens took a late lead over the Vikings, but now Favre has them inside the 25 with under three minutes left!

EDIT: Holy crap! The Vikes get the lead-changing field goal with just under two minutes left. The Ravens take over, and Flacco orchestrates a great drive down to the 27 to set up a 44-yard field goal try with two seconds left, and the kicker drives it wide left! The Vikings dodge a huge bullet there after giving up a big lead in the second half.

Vikings win a very close game. Some wild games today, Rams came close to winning but lose in OT. Rams need to play the Redskins :p

So torn, picked the Vikes but rooting for the Ravens to get that last field goal...hm. Well, congrats to the Ravens for making it an exciting game, that's for sure.

The night games this week are actually going to be very important to the pick 'em... both are pretty closely matched, and people picked every possible combination.

I missed just two of the early games, but it's already looking like my Seattle pick was a poor choice...

Jedi Master Carr
Oct 18th, 2009, 02:39:45 PM
1 loss for me, I was smart going with the Chiefs. I think the Philly game was the only easy game to pick although the Pats look like they should win against the Hapless Titans.

I'm down 4 so far :cry.

The Eagles better not lose to the Raiders! :shakefist

Dragon
Oct 18th, 2009, 04:23:49 PM
Seriously, Titans, what the crap? I mean, I didn't pick you to beat the Patriots or anything, but... 52-0 early in the 3rd quarter? One completion on offense? 89 total yards?

Whatever you were feeding those guys in training camp... you can keep it!

Xavier Synik

8-2 so far for me, but the two "locks" of the afternoon games are in WTF mode with the Jets and Eagles.

Jedi Master Carr
Oct 18th, 2009, 05:13:40 PM
The Eagles played terrible, especially since the Raiders are one of the worst teams in the NFL. What a turnaround for the Titans not sure how they got this bad so fast.

Dragon
Oct 18th, 2009, 05:14:20 PM
Eh, New England was a lock, though I would have undershot the spread by a good margin... Like, forty-five points...

Mark Sanchez keeps putting the ball up for grabs; he's up to four picks in this game. I don't know what to say about the Eagles; it's not like the Raiders had an offensive explosion. They scored on the slowest 86-yard run after catch I've ever seen, a tight end rambling down the sideline with a speedy and physical receiver throwing some incredible blocks for him. That and a pair of field goals is all they needed.

That makes two losses for me in the afternoon, with the Bills and Jets still in doubt. I hope the night games go my way...

EDIT: Shocking fact about the Redskins: Every team Washington has played so far this season has been winless coming into the game. The Redskins are 2-3.

Shadow Storm
Oct 18th, 2009, 07:39:55 PM
So far it's been shaping up to be an interesting season (stats wise). Broncos, Colts, Vikings, and Saints remain undefeated, while Bucs, Rams, and Titans remain winless.

Jedi Master Carr
Oct 18th, 2009, 11:14:27 PM
The Titans are the only shocking winless team. Everybody knew the Rams would be bad and really Tampa is no shock. About the Titans loss they went -7 passing now that is horrible and the first time since the merger a team did that.

Dragon
Oct 18th, 2009, 11:40:44 PM
Apparently Kerry Collins completed two passes - one to Ahmard Hall for 15 yards, and one to Nate Washington for -22 yards. How do you lose 22 yards on a completion? I'd really like to have seen that...

At least his 1.7 QB rating was better than Vince Young's 0.0 (0/2 with an INT).

Dragon
Oct 19th, 2009, 11:53:45 PM
Wow, much wider spread and lower median than usual this week. There were several games that were genuine toss-ups, then add to that a couple head-scratching upsets and a Redskins team that keeps finding new ways to lose... Here I expected the Broncos' steam to run out in a road divisional game that was a must-win for the Chargers, but that Denver defense looks like it's the real thing, and Kyle Orton looked better than I expected as well. Here go the week's results:

Jedi Master Carr: 11-3
Xavier Synik: 10-4
Aurelias Kazaar: 9-5
Nathanial K'cansce: 9-5
Yog: 9-5
Lykaios: 8-6
Ryan Pode: 8-6
Dragon: 7-7
jjwr: 7-7
Liam Jinn: 7-7
Lilaena De'Ville: 7-7
Miranda Tarkin: 7-7
Rutabaga: 7-7
Figrin D'an: 6-8
Shadow Storm: 5-9

And the final tally:

1. Xavier Synik: 62-28 (52)

2. Dragon: 61-29 (54)
3. Miranda Tarkin: 60-30 (53)
4. Nathanial K'cansce: 59-31 (50)
4. Rutabaga: 59-31 (52)
4. Jedi Master Carr: 59-31 (48)
7. Liam Jinn: 58-32 (51)
7. Ryan Pode: 58-32 (50)
9. Yog: 57-33 (48)
9. jjwr: 57-33 (50)
11. Figrin D'an: 56-34 (50)
11. Lilaena De'Ville: 56-34 (49)
13. Aurelias Kazaar: 55-35 (46)
14. Lykaios: 54-36 (46)
15. Shadow Storm: 43-47 (38)

I did worse than I thought, I thought I was 8-6. :x

I blame myself for what happened to the Chargers last night. Had it on in the background and things seemed potentially promising for them, then once I was able to finally sit down and watch the final quarter, it seemed like they totally lost interest in the game. :(

But yeah, what a strange weekend, that's for sure.
