As in, I get no sound out of it. It was working fine yesterday and now, nothing. I've rebooted, reinstalled drivers, switched to a different pair of speakers and even switched to a different audio jack on the PC. I get no sound whatsoever. It's fairly disturbing. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this? The PC works just fine otherwise so I'm at a total loss.

I assume you have checked the volume controls in windows?

Also, go to "control panel" - "device manager", "sound video and game controllers", right click your sound card / sound chip, and select properties. It should say "This device is working properly".

Perhaps you've gone deaf. :(

Aliens may have stolen the sound from space your computer occupies?

Yog: Yes.

Lil: No.

Das: No.

Fred: DUDE THAT WAS MY COBBLER

Jerry: No soup for you!

Brian: I'm farking hungry. Time to scrounge.

And for anyone else who may ask, yes I checked to see if I was on mute. It was the first thing I did. :p

I've checked online and can't find anything that seems to give me advice other than "install new sound card". I could do that, I just don't feel like spending money if I don't have to.

1) Kill the software driver

2) Reboot

3) Allow system to rediscover and reinstall driver

You did double check all physical connections?

If by that you mean make sure things are securely plugged in their connector ports, then yes. I had to, to test the speakers vs the headphones.

This is making me grumble. At least my iPhone can still pick up internet things.

Well unless you didnt completely strip the driver out totally from device manager then reboto and allow the software to reinstall - you have a dead sound card. Very odd, it is onboard isnt it?

Dont usually see those dying.

I did exactly that with no success. And yes, it's onboard. I wonder what the hell happened.

If I were to buy a sound card and install it, I guess that would solve the problem. Unless there's something else entirely that's going on software-wise.

Make sure the sound service is running. Which version of windows are you running and which motherboard do you have?

OS is 64-bit Vista. Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX. Below is a product link if you want to see it.

It's possible you have reinstalled the 32 bit drivers by mistake. Now, all 64bit drivers must be signed before the OS allows them to be installed so I cant quite see how that would happen but eh, worth a guess.

It honestly would not surprise me you reload the OS as Windows 7 and it just works.

Make sure the Windows Audio service is running.

There was a very recent driver release for the sound, give it a shot. http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=2952&ost=windows+vista+x64+(64-bit)#anchor_os

I had already found and installed that driver.

The sound is back. Why the sound is back I don't know. I have changed nothing since this morning/last night. Not a thing has been unplugged, nor has a software item been installed. The only thing I can gather is that my PC was temporarily possessed by a demon and later exorcised by the brothers Winchester.

Thanks very much to those who offered assistance.

Oh yeah, I told Sam about your problem during our weekly "rendezvous". Glad they cleared it up for you, the sneaky bastards. ;)

Sorry, Bri.. you know there must be at least one obligatory scene of Sam and/or Dean giving some hottie the eyes before serious business can commence.

Oh, there were more than eyes involved. ;)

There is always more involved where the eyes are concerned, it's inevitable :mischief

This is true. Throw in a classic car and Padalimbs and, well, it's game over man.
