View Full Version : Can I use you guys as a sounding board?

To cut a long story short, I've had an idea for another webcomic. However, my artistic abilities are somewhat lacking as you've probably seen from Bytes, and if this concept was done visually I'd want something a little less... shit.

I've had a couple of suggestions of alternate ways of doing the story; mostly related to presenting it in a text-based format. One was a Doctor Horrible / The Guild esque blog thing, where the story was told from the perspective of one of the characters, recounting the events of each installment to his blog. Another suggestion was to simply format it as a regular story narrative, but post it to a blog in short installments.

I have a few ideas of how to implement that sort of thing... but do you guys think anyone would actually read it? How short would each installment have to be for people to actually put the effort in to read it regularly... or, at any length, would it just not be a fast-paced enough way of feeding the story into people's brains?

I realise a roleplay community isn't necessarily a comprehensive sample of society for this sort of thing, but I'd be interested to know what you guys think.

I think posting a story in installments online can really work. I can think of two authors off the top of my head who have written novels this way and gone on to have them published, in one case with a multi-book deal. Hell, John Dies at the End ( http://www.johndiesattheend.com/ ) is even being made into a movie!

JDatE seems to have had a really big readership as it was posted online, so I'd say there is no reason why you couldn't work in a similar format and have an audience. Not necessarily a huge audience at first, but if you pimp it out enough, network with other author-blogs... who knows :)
