Well today was the day, and unfortunately Chicago was eliminated early. I think Rio has it now. I think they got it because South America has never had the Olympics.

I'm glad Chicago was eliminated. That would be a depressing place for the Olympics. I really do hope its Rio.

Shoulda been Los Angeles - we woulda won. ;)
(When deciding who would be the USA's city to try to get the 2016 bid, the USOC's three finalists were San Francisco, LA and Chicago - they barely edged us out after SF dropped out last minute)

Well there is 2020. I know Boston and St. Louis are considering bids for 2020. St. Louis might be a good choice. I don't think LA would have had much of an advantage. Chicago was ahead until late yesterday afternoon and Brazil's president made a passionate speech to say bring it to Brazil to liven up the whole continent of South America. I don't think the U.S had anything to compare to what Brazil would bring.

I don't think anyone really knew who was ahead. These are always a crapshoot really. I figured Madrid had a fantastic shot because one of the leaders of their bid was the former president of the IOC.

If Madrid wins though I think it shows the IOC is corrupt. No way should Europe get the Olympics 2 times in a row.

Rio got it, good for them. It is very historic since South America has never hosted it.

I most definately want to make it down there for the swimming events. Probably the cycling too. I'm getting ahead of myself since it's going to cost a fortune but that won't stop me! Beijing turned me into a complete Olympics lunatic... which is why I'm very very nervous about 2012. How can we not look lame following on from the show China put on for the world? :ohno

The Olympics are always more about the athletes than the host cities. I wouldn't stress about it man.

You can say that again. Vancouver's getting the 2010 Winter Olympics. Man the tickets sell out ridiculously fast(many to scalpers but that's not new) and are VERY expensive.:(

If Boston gets it in 2020 I'd definitley make it down for a few events just for the heck of it.

Yeah I think Boston will try for it 2020, it won't be easy but I would love to see it get it.

South America never had it, so I am pretty excited about this.
As for London, it's geographically close for me, but I am worried about hotel costs and the cost of tickets. Besides, the TV coverage of these events just gets better every time, so it's almost better watching it on a big TV in HD (the big exception of course is the opening and closing ceremony). Maybe though, who knows.

Being from Chicago, I'm surprised we even made it this far. I was expecting for my city to be eliminated quite earlier. I would have probably died of shock if we would have won actually since Rio gave an impressive presentation, and seriously, no Olympics in South America ever? They should get it! Glad they did.

True, Yog... I suppose I just wonder whether I should go now, when its unlikely that the Olympics will be so close to me again for many years. I imagine the atmosphere in London being something really unique during the Games.

The best thing about the Sydney Olypmics was the piss up when the rotten thing ended.
