Fourth of July isnt a holiday in Canada, but getting time off work hasn't ever been a problem for me. I'll probably fly out a bit earlier anyway. I'm down for just a week of hanging out somewhere with everyone, minus the Con. Also have time-share possibilities if we really need it :)

Mandy, July 1st is a Thursday next year, so it might actually work on the whole holiday thing for us Canucks too.

July long weekend would be good for me.

Mandy with an I
Sep 13th, 2009, 07:34:37 PM
I get ONE "official" holiday from work, and that is Christmas, so holidays really don't matter to me in terms of days off. If I'm flying out there, I'm not going for just a weekend anyway.

4th July isn't a big deal for me either... hopefully I will still have a job by then at least! I'm not really interested in ComicCon tho. I would rather we just got a house to hang out at together.

Sep 13th, 2009, 08:10:02 PM
While I won't rule out ComiCon, I would rather hang out with people and do other stuff. Plus, if we don't have to pay through the nose for a con and all the pricey stuff that goes with it, I can afford to cook for people (providing we have a kitchen) - which includes making baklava :)

Mandy with an I
Sep 13th, 2009, 08:18:43 PM
If we have a house, then everyone can pitch for food/booze/gas, and everyone can pitch in with cooking and cleaning. I really liked helping out in the kitchen at Charleys :)

I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again since this thread is for planning and all that jazz.

If she's game, we can head out to Nevada and relax with my mom up in the mountains. She's got 14 acres, so there's plenty of space, and lots of sleep space as well. We wouldn't have to pay for a house or hotel or anything, and if anyone is wanting to cook, her kitchen is always open and she'd jump on the chance to not have to cook.

She lives about an hour and a half south of Reno, and about the only hitch I can think of is that it's 30 minutes to the nearest grocery store; though I suppose that's about the same situation as things here in Alabama so it's not really as bad an issue at all. If anyone wants to take trips up to drive around Tahoe or Lake Topaz, it's completely doable.

Wine is plentiful out there, as are mojitos, mudslides, beer, and any other drink conceivable.

Mountains, fresh air, a distinct lack of sobriety, it's all there!

If people are considering the 4th of July weekend, Minneapolis has a con going on the first through the 4th

http://www.convergence-con.org/

It was a blast being there this year and the firework show is awesome (watched it from the roof of my house).

Have a lot of space at my place (house is built for around 25-28 people). Only problem is that it is very close to downtown and the police have been know to be party poopers even when everyone is of drinking age.

I might actually be able to pull something for July 4th next year. Depending on how things turn out now, of course. Seems like I'll be heading out to visit family in California anyway (though that's a mixed blessing sorta thing), so an early stop in Nevada (or in Minneapolis) for a few days or so wouldn't be that hard to pull off.

Captain Untouchable
Sep 13th, 2009, 10:45:32 PM
I don't know what I'll be doing that sort of time next year, but I'm pretty sure that getting time off around July won't be a problem. And if it is a problem, I'm willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure I have time off, providing you guys are willing to hide me from the law when I get over there. ;)

I've been toying with going to ComicCon anyway next year... what sort of dates is it, usually? If its possible to do both in one trip without exploderizing the bank, I'll probably give it a shot, especially if some of you guys are heading out there as well. If not, I'm sure you guys can help me drown my sorrows about not being able to go to the Con. :mischief

I'm all for Nevada :D

Mainly because... Comic Con is getting bigger and bigger and harder to actually "hang out" with people each year. >_< It's fun to attend, but I wouldn't suggest it as a focal point like Dragon*Con kinda was. And as much fun as the con was...I think on the grand scale everyone had a lot more fun during the just hang-out times. While Comic Con is basically in my back yard and I'd love a 3 hour drive rather than a 5 hour plane flight...really I'm in it to just hang out with you guys again. So while I don't have anything bad to really say about Comic Con (by all means go!) I don't think I could recommend that as a "get together" type of thing.

And for reference: Comic Con is usually the last weekend in July, or thereabouts.

I was going to post something like this yesterday, then I passed out and slept until just now. Feelin pretty yummy though.

The more important question out of the two is when you want to hold the vacation because where you go and how much it costs gets impacted by what time of year it is. Spring is probably terrible for everyone. I could theoretically do something summer-wise. Nevada is also doable in terms of location. More to come after work today.

Umm... noooooo! That'll be another get-together I won't be able to attend... not just money-wise, but also time-wise... since school's not over until August.... :cry

If it was August or September, it would be great since I'll be somewhere in the US anyway... I had been hoping you'd all settle for around the same time as this year. :\

I would love to get together again but with a new baby it will be difficult next year to 'hang out' - not that I was able to do much hanging out this time. :( We will most likely be at ComicCon as its a short flight (or a long drive... but most likely a short flight) for us and we'll be able to have a hotel room to nap the kids in.

Being grown-up is hard sometimes. I'd love to just hang and drink and be goofy. I missed out on all of that this time - didn't even know where you guys were hanging out!

edit: from the dragon*khaaan thread:

San Diego to Portland is a hefty 17 hour drive. Seventeen hours of not drinking... :uhoh

Well, even taking the con out of the picture, I'm more than happy to play hostess to a group of crazy people next summer. :) Plus there's like, things to do in Portland... and public transportation to go do it.

Like going to the zoo one day. Or taking a drive to the beach and having a bonfire.

And in the summer we have great weather.

Boo, I don't think I can make it in the summer either. The marine study I'm hoping to get attached to once we move is mainly conducted in the summer months as that's when the population of Great Whites is most heavily concentrated in the area. :(

Unless I just don't work for a bit after we move. :mischief

Here's something Liz and I were kicking around.

What if, instead of a meetup in the summer, we shoot for the winter? If we still plan to go to Nevada, we can do wintery things which include going up to the slopes for a few days and skiing/snowboarding, roasting marshmallows, making smores, curling up in blankets, hot chocolate, hot toddies, and of course drinking.

As far as what mountains are around the area, we have Kirkwood, Diamond Peak, June Mountain, Mt. Rose, and Mammoth. June is my favorite, but Diamond Peak and Kirkwood are great as well, plus if we decide to go to one of those that means gorgeous drives through the Tahoe area.

Bonfires should be doable, but it depends on how dry it's been this season out there.

Miranda Tarkin
Sep 14th, 2009, 05:17:14 PM
I.... can't do any of those things listed in regards to mountains and snow.

Loklorien s'Ilancy
Sep 14th, 2009, 05:30:04 PM
The nice alternative to that is that anyone who doesn't feel like hitting the slopes can go out sledding. In fact, we could all just drive out to Tahoe and hit up one or more of the scenic pull-offs to take pictures, play in the snow, and sled :D

Nya, would you be able to make a meet-up during that time?

Xavier Synik

I would love to meet you guys and hang out but I don't think I'd able able to swing the costs of a Con, much less during the summer when air-fare and lodging are always more expensive.

In all honesty I'd much rather just get together with a bunch of cool peeps, drink and be merry; time permitting and depending on location maybe even do other things.

Karl has offered his home in MPLS and while my house isn't that big, I can also host a few crazy individuals if Minny is decided as the destination for this nerdfest.

What you don't want me to be able to finally live up to my nickname and actually bury you in the snow?

Uh while winter is fine and all. One of the themes I'm seeing is that people need a fair bit of notice ahead of time for getting time off/saving money/etc. So if winter wins it would probably have to be like Nov/Dec '10 - Jan/Feb/Mar/early Apr '11.

Just my kind of observation on things. Seems too short notice to be thinking this winter (even in 2010).

Loklorien s'Ilancy

Ha, there's no way I'd be able to swing anything this winter. I was thinking of Nov/Dec '10, or maybe even new years for '11, since it would allow us a year and a half advance warning.

The more you put on, the more you have to take off during strip poker.

I mean, what?

Like I said earlier, "when" is the biggest question to answer since it heavily affects who goes and what you can do. So let's get some input on time periods of the year and people's availability preferences. Let me put up a poll and we can see what people's preferences are for times of year.

Oh, I didn't know she was moving to Africa. ^_^;

Ok here are some good reasons to do this in Portland in the summer.
Breweries and brewery tours (Rogue, Pyramid, Full Sail, just to name a few)
Many wineries within driving distance if that's your thing
Airport is close (like 20 minutes)
Civilization in general (shopping, the zoo, arena events)
1.5 hours to beach OR mountains
Pool table
fire pit
fully stocked liquor cabinet/beer fridge
65 in. tv, blu-ray player, x-box 360...
Fun tent city in our backyard, plus rooms inside for people
cuddly cats
cute baby (if that's your thing, if not we'll keep her away from you)
Full Nerf arsenal for war makingPlus if you/we decide to come to my house then we will:
get the backyard finished up nice
get a pool
Ty may convince me to let him get a keg fridge for beer on tap

Well - just about anything west of UT is a go for me provided it's not a crunch time at work. Unfortunately, that includes the Christmas to New Year's to mid January.

Personally, I would prefer late Nov. / early Dec. 2010 for money and job sakes. It's a slump in my work schedule and would give me enough time to save up propper. Wouldn't mind checking out the Nevada mountains, never been... but LOVE pretty much everything I've seen on the west coast from San Diego up to Seattle. Oh and if you've never been to Portland... you should. It kicks ass! Old Towne rocks.

But I'm game for just about anything provided the check book can handle it. I'd probably just drive from SLC to wherever, because public transportation in the west is pretty much called your "feet." :)

Called the mom-person, and she's totally down with a hang-out trip if that's what we decide.

I do have a feeling though that there is a strong possibility of two separate trips springing out of this, since there are folks who can't make one but can make the other and vice versa.

Pierce Tondry

Not necessarily just the holding thing, though: I think there's a fair bet that we'll make a lot of noise with our combined antics, which might make it tough for little'un to sleep, and such like. :\

At least, that's what I'd be worried about. Well, either that, or getting distracted by how adorable the baby is, and not getting any drinking done. ;)

I'd actually like to do the Con/Bama again. It would be much easier now that we all have some experience under our belts and we could do our best to book a block of rooms. We know where to eat, where to buy groceries, when we can buy alcohol, some of the panels to go to etc. Everything worked out really well IMO, and it could go even better.

I'd be up for the Con if the hotel situation was better. Then I'd maybe get to see more people than this time >_>

Agreed, I had a blast with the whole experience. What I liked about it was there was a wide enough variety of things going on that you could find your own flavor of geekdom to roll through.

Was nice hitting panels I hadn't considered with people or flying solo or wandering into a panel for something completely unplanned and meeting up for events and chilling otherwise. Also, having everything within walking distance was awesome. (say's the girl living in the city with streets as wide as city blocks going up several hundred feet quickly at high altitude. :D )

Plus - I actually did learn some things in a few panels that I plan to put to good use and was sort of thinking about trying to hit it again next year anyway. The whole thing gave me some ideas to work on and with.

The con probably would be more manageable this time around now that we know what we're getting into, and I would go again (and enjoy it!) if the majority wanted to, but I like the idea of doing something different too.

I like the idea of going somewhere else, but going to the Con would give us a set date for the meet up. And it's a year away, so it's enough time to save up money.

The poll is like, tied 4 or 5 ways. :(

If Dragon*Con wins I think I can convince Ty to skip ComicCon and do DragonCon instead. I think we should try harder to all be in host hotels or the same hotel even, though. :)

As far as drunk people making noise and doing not kid-friendly things, it shouldn't be a problem. I want my kids to be able to sleep through noise anyway, and Owen can. It gets pretty loud during UFC night!

In unrelated news I dreamt last night I got married to Chris, which was bizarre. :o

I've got no real interest in being in a host hotel when our little motel was 2 seconds from the Hilton and so much cheaper.

I guess my votes right now are either for Nevada in the winter, or dragon*con.

Georgia is one side of the States, Nevada is the complete opposite. Coordinating everyone's flights between the two, post-con, sounds like an absolute nightmare (not to mention even more expensive). Having the festivities in Alabama post-con was a great idea this year and if Charley/Christin were up for doing that again, I would certainly love the chance to be a guest at their home again.

All of the sites I've been checking out flights on only allow booking up till the second week of August ATM. :-/

I wouldn't mind the Con, but I would love to go to Nevada simply because I've never been there before and it's going to be gorgeous.

Edit - We should do Nevada in early/mid November, so we're not butting up against holidays since people can't get time off work/have family commitments, etc. Let's just do Nevada! ;)

Flights over to Europe aren't actually that expensive, if you book them like.... a year in advance :p I've gotten return flights for something as low as 400$ ... besides, there's the wonderful Ryanair airline which has been talking about expanding their services to run intercontinental flights from next year onward.... not sure how much they'll end up charging for flights but they're the people who have the 1€ flights within Europe... they do have some wacky ideas about baggage allowances, but I am guessing they won't simply extend their flight services to cater to casual weekend visitors to New York city that don't bring more than hand luggage...

Come to think of it, we really should have a Europe get-together once.

I like the idea of Nevada not to sure about the in winter part though. Although it's probably warmer in nevada in the winter then it is in SD. I'm not much of a winters outdoors kind of person even though I live in state has fairly long winters.

Dragon also sounds like a good idea even though I wasn't able to make it there this year do my car going to crap (so money was tight) and having to use up all my vacation at the begining of summer for family stuff. This next year I could swing it though more then likely. Plus with my jobs new payment procedures it will be allot easier for me to book a hotel room and such.

If had to choose one over the other it would be nevada simply because if something happened to me or I couldn't make it back to sd (do to it being winter.) I got friends in nevada, family in cali and Utah.

Finding places to go shooting isn't hard at all, since all it would entail was going out into the desert and finding an open space.

Also to note, there are many desert driving trails to explore and go four-wheeling along.

If we're ranking by preference of event order, mine is:

1) Nevada
2) DragonCon

I've already done D*C once and while it was fun, I like doing new things too and I have never been to Nevada. Plus I would kick all your asses in a snowball fight (assuming it was winter) and I think it would be neat to meet Christin's crazy mom and/or family.

I'd do D*C again if it came down to it, especially since there are things that we didn't get to do (shoot zombie targets with guns), but it would take some persuading to convince me to do that over Nevada.

Captain Untouchable
Sep 16th, 2009, 07:08:23 PM
I would pick Nevada over Dragon*Con as well. Much as I'd like to go and geek out over various things, there are conventions in the UK that I can go to for that, if I wanted. What the UK doesn't have is you guys... so if its a straight choice between the two, I say "to hell with the con".

Besides: from the sound of it, you guys had the most fun when you were doing non-con group stuff: chilling out in rooms, going to the aquarium, or whatever.

From the look of things, I think August/September/October is probably the easiest time for as many people as possible to go: December/January and July/August seem like it'd be tough for people to get time off work and stuff. On the plus side as well, it means us Europe people won't be flying in during the peak holiday times, so our tickets might be a touch cheaper. :mischief

Hmm. Unless we could somehow arrange for cool celebs and such to show up at Christin's mom's place - we could have Burning NerdCon!

For two people sharing a two room suite it was $356 each. And you could easily put at the LEAST two more people in there comfortably.

The Wyndham was very close as well, and was not a host hotel. I would recommend it (although it was a little weird, what with disappearing couches and other small oddities, :lol). And it had the internet, a microwave, and a small fridge. Ours was really small but I think we just had an odd room. :p

Morgan Evanar
Sep 16th, 2009, 09:51:33 PM
356 is about double what the Motel 6 crew paid, no reason we couldn't pile in again, although I may opt for just a room between the woman and I. Nevada sounds interesting but things went so well, and I honestly enjoyed the drive until the very last leg (Tampa to Miami, very short on sleep).

pros of the Wyndham - pool, microwave, fridge, two bathrooms

cons - sofa bed & was about $153*/night

I'm down with reserving a Motel 6 room and bunking with a few people again - however, it would be a cool jazz chillax environ sans wet bar. Would direct all hardcore peeps down to the hall. =)

* - plus or minus 6 bucks - would have to look at bills to calculate actual nightly charge per night

So... working an extra couple of shifts a week means I can earn enough for tickets in about a month. Unfortunately, 'cause I'm on monthly pay now, and the cut-off is two weeks before pay day, I won't get that money until the end of April.

If we're cleared to use tannerite on the ranch, and I put in to buy two cases, would folks be cool with pitching in on the cost? Should end up being about $200.00 when shipping's factored in.

We were driving down the road drunk on moonshine and firing off shotguns into the air at random. Charley wore a straw hat and Christin kept spitting her chaw at nearby pedestrians.

The best part was when we stopped to let Sam piss. While he was checking the elevation, Liz stumbled drunkenly into a cow and tipped it into another cow. Then we had a whole domino chain of cows falling over.

Mandi took pictures, but she was so drunk she forgot her camera was out of power so we don't have a record. It happened though.
