For the REAL football. ;)
Big first weekend of the season kicked off last night. Boise State beat oregon is the game with the most national attention.
But in the game of the night NT beat Ball State ---- ONE AND OH BABY!!!!

One major upset today in Oklahoma getting beat by BYU in part because of their crappy offensive line. Bradford got hurt which probably also cost them any chance to win. Alabama looked very good, and really the game was never that close. They dominated Virginia Tech most of the game, if it wasn't for some problems with special teams and mental mistakes they would have won 40 something to 10. I had mixed emotions with Clemson's win. I was glad they won but felt bad for my current school. MTSU didn't embarrass themselves at least and showed some promise for their season.

I'm not sure BYU beating OU was THAT big of an upset. The MWC has shown the last few years that they're legit. Not to mention BYU was in the Top 25.
Virginia Tech wins games ugly like that often tho. Good win by Bama, the Hokies definitely coulda stolen that game.
Oklahoma State beat Georgia is the other marquee game of the day. OSU looks really, really good IMHO.
Jedi Master Carr

Well the game was in OU and they were ranked 3rd I say it was a big upset, although without Bradford they didn't stand much of a chance.

It was actually a nuetral site game(though with way more Sooner fans). I'm not saying it wasn't an upset, it was, but I personally don't think it was a massive one.

BYU was probably a little underrated coming into that game, so props to them for finding a way to win a game in a hostile environment against a more talented foe.
Oklahoma has a few weeks of easier opponents that they should be able to beat handily without Bradford, but I think they pretty much blew a national title shot by losing on Saturday. They have to run the table now to have a chance, and with Texas being even better than last year and Oklahoma State looking pretty good, I have my doubts that will happen.
Let's say BYU and Boise State both go undefeated this year (BYU has some tough games yet, but Boise State's remaining schedule is pretty manageable). Does the BCS find room for both of them?

Pretty crazy day today. Alot of big teams go down(Cal being the most shocking...not that that they lost, but the total destruction), tho it's hard to classify any of these rankings as having alot of validity.
I think the rankings that come out tomorrow will really be the first ones that have any sort of meaning. We've seen just about everyone play a big test at this point, so we are starting to get a handle on who is good.

Pre-season polls need to be eliminated. There shouldn't be any polls until the first BCS rankings come out in mid-October, IMO. Using two polls, one done by coaches who barely pay attention to anyone besides their team and their next opponent, the other done by a cross section of the sports media of whom maybe only 1/4 actually pay attention and watch all the games, to decide not only who gets into a championship game, but to rank teams before they even get on the field in August, is just dumb.
I still don't think we have a good feel for who is for real or not. Honestly, the two teams I've been most impressed with so far this season are Alabama and Cincinnati. Houston is a nice story so far, Boise State could run the table again, and Florida and Texas are about where everyone expected them to be record-wise.
It's hard for me to be very into college football this season. It's been brutal to be a Purdue fan this year. At least basketball season isn't that far off.

These last couple of weeks will be interesting if only to see if teams like TCU and Cincinnati finish undefeated. It's a very real possibility that we could end up with 5 undefeated teams after the conference championships are done. If something like that isn't evidence enough for some kind of playoff format, there's little else that can.
That said, the BCS title game will be Texas vs. Florida/Alabama as long as the schedule holds. It would be kind of anti-climactic if that is the case, since that's been the prediction since about Week 2 of the season.
Personally, I'd love to see TCU get a shot at the whole ball of wax. Of the "other" undefeateds, the Horned Frogs are the most complete teams IMO. They have a nasty defense could compete in a BCS conference, and their offense has been all but unstoppable. Lots of athleticism and speed. If nothing else, it would be great to see them match up with the loser of the SEC title game in a BCS bowl.
Jedi Master Carr

It is unfair that TCU has no chance, they are penalized because of where they were ranked when the season began. If they are going to have a playoff they should at least not rank the teams until week 3 or so to get a better idea how good teams are.

I think, given that Colt McCoy has won the Walter Camp, Davey O'Brien and Maxwell awards, combined with some carryover sympathy vote from him probably deserving it last year instead of Bradford, the Heisman voters are likely to give it to him tomorrow night as a career achievement nod. It's happened before.
Personally, I think Gerhart was the most dynamic and productive, and if you separate team success from individual achievement, I think he probably deserves it most, followed closely by Suh. Suh will still end up being the richest out of all of these guys next April.
Not that I really care about college football anymore this year. I'm already fully into hoops mode.

Whoops I got it mixed up. Still don't think it matters though. I see Alabama winning easily. I think Texas is overrated.
Just how USC was gonna win easily over Texas in 2006, or Florida State was going to roll Oklahoma in 2001, or Miami was going to destroy Ohio State in 2002.
As much as I don't like the talking heads on ESPN very much, Kirk Herbstreit made a great point last week... there's going to be a solid month of talk propping up Alabama and praising them for how good they are and how they'll obliterate Texas just by showing up, and plenty of talk about how Texas didn't play well down the stretch of the season, and is overrated and maybe shouldn't be playing for the national title. No matter how much coaches try to shield their teams from the media discussion, they will hear it. Alabama players will hear about how good they are, and Texas players will hear about how much they suck in comparison. And more often than not, either the massively hyped team comes out of the gates flat or the team labeled as overrated plays with a chip on their shoulder and lays it all on the line to prove themselves. If one of those things happens, you have a tight ball game. If both of those things happen, you end up with a "Florida over Ohio State in 2007" type of beat down upset.
I'm not saying Alabama won't win (to his credit, Nick Saban is pretty deadly when he's given more than a week to prepare for an opponent), but anyone who thinks this will be a one-sided mockery of a game hasn't been paying attention to the college football landscape for the last 10 years.

Apparently, Urban Meyer has resigned as head coach at Florida.

Official reason is "health concerns."

I'm wondering if his cancer is back. That sucks.

I heard heart problems are the reason.

McCoy is out and it doesn't look good for him coming back. Texas is now in a tough position to come back.

Yeah it did, Alabama's defense won the game in the end.

It was over the moment Colt McCoy was done. I don't think he would have made the mistakes the Gilbert made, that effectively doomed the Longhorns.

It's a complete shame that Colt McCoy missed what was basically the biggest game of his career to this point. Despite all of UT's success while he has been their quarterback, it's pretty amazing how much he has and his team have gotten screwed through no fault of their own.
Despite all of that, the kid is a class act, and I hope he finds a good home in the NFL and has a solid career.
Alabama deserved to win, though. They played hard, made plays when they needed to, and capped a great season by playing like a championship team should in a game when it's all on the line. Considering the personnel that they bring back next year, it seems likely they'll be the preseason #1 team in August.

Kiffin goes to USC, talk about betrayal to Tennessee fans, although the Vols are probably better off. Kiffin was pushing them to probation with a lot of his actions.

Lane Kiffin has gotten more high profile jobs for doing so very little than any other coach in recent memory. The guy is 12-21 as a head coach (1.5 years with Oakland, 1 at Tennessee), and now he's being handed the keys to the high performance USC machine that Pete Carroll built.
The only good part about this move for USC is that they get Monte Kiffin, Ed Orgeron and Norm Chow as part of the deal, whom are all far better coaches/recruiters their boss.
This will not end well. Kiffin with either jump back to the NFL, just like his mentor Carroll, or he'll ensure that the NCAA hammer about to hit the Trojan program strikes with even more force.

Kiffin is the ultimate football troll.

He's a dick, but he was a dick to Tennessee so he is the greatest person ever.
