Arriving in Alabama 8-29-09 (Saturday)
Flying out of Richmond via US Airways at 9:20-ish AM. Switch flights in Charlotte, NC; my inbound plane is Flight 2269. It will arrive in BHM approximately 12:00 pm, so I'll need an airport pickup around then.

Departing from Alabama 9-13-09 (Sunday)
Departing at 8:00 AM on Flight 2276 from BHM.

Uhh departing from ATL at 4:15 PM on the 10th ...soooo maybe if I beg plead and bribe I can catch a ride with whoever is taking Mira back? :) If not I'm sure we can work something out anyway.

Yep. That's that. :)

Continental Airlines CO84, Thursday 10 Sep

I private messaged Charley with more details about the flight itinerary.

I also nee addresses and telephone numbers for places - if you could PM me those they would greatly ease my mothers fear thank you please!

Haha, we're in the same boat on that one. Here is a typical conversation with my mother. :p

Mom: "Who are all these people!? How can you know them on the Internet, they must be complete strangers. What are their names, where do they live, what are their jobs, do they live in a slum in Alabama? How big is their house? Are you going to sleep on the floor? Why are you traveling alone? What are you going to do in Atlanta and where will you sleep. When did you order the flight and hotel, and how much did it cost. What is the name of and where is the hotel. Why did you not tell me this before. Why are you spending so much money on this. Why are..." *inhale*

Me: "Take a deep breath and let me explain what..".

Mom: Aahhhh... 9/11 terrists... Bin Laden... swine flu... thieves... serial killers... party drugs... *inhale*

Me: :rolleyes

Good to know that even at our age Yog, our Mother's are crazy :) ... granted with reason but we are both 32!

I basically told my Mom that I've known these people for almost 10 years and we've shared wacky adventures together about our lives without ever meeting. It's all good, and besides, we'll be traveling in packs

^ I've been to visit Christin and Charley like, 3 times, and I still have to give my mum all of their information AND my travel information. I've told her I would have my cell with me, but noooo, the sky might fall and cell phones will be useless!

I just find it funny that no matter how old or where you are from, all mothers worry about their little babies when they travel :)

:lol Nice to hear my mom's not the only one who does that. Oddly enough, mine has been pretty cool about this whole thing, even when I told her my boyfriend wasn't coming with me. I think it's because of when I went and visited Lyk earlier this year and came back all in one piece. Though...I'm sure I'll get the "names, numbers, itinerary NOW" routine just before I leave.

I know that when my plane lands I'll be calling her going "Not dead! See you in a week :D" at the very least. lol

I'm so furious at Delta Airlines right now. They cancelled my direct flights (I suppose they did not fill enough seats) and instead offered me flight itineraries with truly horrendous time tables, or a full refund, which btw can take some 4-6 weeks to process. I chose the refund and booked tickets with Continental Airlines instead. What a terrible company Delta Airlines is.

Here is my updated itinerary.

Continental Airlines CO1151, Thursday 3 Sep
Depart: NEWARK (EWR) 3:30PM
Arrive: ATLANTA (ATL) 5.56PM

Continental Airlines CO84, Thursday 10 Sep
Depart ATLANTA (ATL) 12:00PM
Arrive: NEWARK (EWR) 2.28PM

I'll be arriving in Atlanta the same time as before (to be picked up by Charley I believe), but departing earlier than I had planned. I noticed Miranda will be departing Atlanta almost the same time as me (her plane leaves 1 hour later). Maybe I could hook up with Morgan / Miranda for the drive to the airport?

I'm guessing this is a customs thing, to get your baggage? Or do you mean just waiting for your bag/s at baggage claim, because that can take forever sometimes anyway. I hate checking in a suitcase, but I'm not lugging mine around with me in Houston to my connecting flight. Plus then I wouldn't be able to bring Charley his wine.

The train has about five concourses, the last being baggage claim. It shouldn't be too complex. Just make sure you get off at the baggage claim. The exits are right next to it.

As far as weather, it will still be warm so be advised. It also tends to rain unexpected.

We have a saying here, "If you don't like the weather in Georgia, just wait an hour."

Cool! I don't know what the transportation capacity is. Charley would be the man who knows. I'm fairly certain we'll have three cars, and Morg's holds 5 (5? or was it 4, maybe 5).

I think we have 10 people (12 with the Hicks) wait, 13 with you... going to their house from Atlanta. So if each car holds 5 then I think we have enough.

But I don't know if each car holds 5 or if we're for sure having three cars.

Jenny, Atlanta's international arrivals procedure can be quite harrowing. I've been through there a few times when I flew over from Germany. Usually it takes about an hour to get through customs and all the security checks, and that's on an average day... if there's lots of air traffic, the place goes nuts. There's always someone arguing in the line, about having to be fingerprinted and their picture taken, and someone who forgot to fill out the visa waiver etc...

Ah no worries, just keep your cool and have everything filled out by the time you touch down. They hand out the visa waivers on board already, so keep a pen around, somewhere (if there's not a regulation yet that forbids people to carry one on board in case someone tried to use it as a weapon :p). Probably good to have something like a newspaper to fan yourself with, in case you're standing in a long line and it's roasting hot .... and keep all the paperwork within easy reach.

Oh, and wear sandals. And definitely no belt. Or jewelry of any kind. Cos if you wear any other kind of shoe, or a belt, you'll have to take them off, possibly even multiple times while you pass the various security checks. There's nothing worse than wasting time undoing shoelaces and then re-tying them the entire time... and I've heard of people losing jewelry during the process of going through the various checks, cos it can easily slip out of a pocket it's been hastily stuffed into, etc.

Don't put anything into your carry-on that might have something liquid inside it. Or anything that might look remotely suspicious. Including batteries. Atlanta was the airport that once gave me trouble for leaving two batteries in my daughter's doll. Stick everything into your normal luggage, no one will give a damn about that as long as it's not food you're not allowed to carry (meat and honey and stuff like that - whereas they don't seem to have any problem with you bringing an entire crate of beer with you in your suitcase :lol).

Dasquian Belargic
Sep 1st, 2009, 01:40:51 PM
What about electronics? o_O I was going to keep my camera, chargers, etc in my backpack/hand luggage... surely that won't be a problem?

Nya Halcyon
Sep 1st, 2009, 01:47:20 PM
No problem carrying cameras, cell phone, etc... never brought a charger along in the carry-on, tho, so can't tell you about that but I'm guessing they wouldn't be concerned about that.

Had to actually throw away the camera batteries once, cos they told me I couldn't carry them on board. But that was flying over there, not in Atlanta.

Basically, as I said, anything that might look suspicious or could be used to stab, poison or choke someone... best left out of there. Thinking about it, they might interpret the charger cable as a possible garrotte, so.... :p

By the way, anyone going to imbibe during the con? We're going to sneak in a bottle of vodka in our luggage and use a canteen or a flask. The hotels already stock sodas and juices, which will be our mixers.

Anyone interested, here are some Dragon*Con drink recipes:

Jaegermonster- As the name implies, it's Jaegermeister + Monster energy drink

Praxis Mineral Water:
5 parts vodka
3 parts blue curacao
1 part peach schnapps
1 part creme de banana
splash of grenadine
1 part cranberry juice
(optional) splash of white grape juice

With or without the grape juice, the drink tastes like watered-down grape kool-aid. Also, no, once it is mixed you can't taste the banana. It is only there as a masking agent. (Which it does quite well)

Silk panties---half vodka, half peach schnapps--shaken

Ampwell--
1/2 can sprite
1/2 bottle smirnoff ice
1/4 shot sweet lime juice
2 shots midori
1 shot vodka

Ice Planet...Add to one gallon jug filled 1/4th with ice, two parts everclear, two parts peppermint schnapps, one part Brendan's irish cream, and a half cup of creme de menthe. Give a shake and pour into clear glass, watch layers swirl like the surface of neptune!

Dragon's Blood
1 part vodka
1 part hawaiian punch

And my personal fave:

1 part Sweet Tea Vodka
1 part Chick-fil-A Lemonade

What about electronics? o_O I was going to keep my camera, chargers, etc in my backpack/hand luggage... surely that won't be a problem?
I put my chargers in my checked bag (except my phone charger, might need that if my luggage is lost). Basically the more 'layers' of electronics you have in your carry on, the more trouble you'll have going through security because they won't be able to get a clear x-ray image and they'll have to go through it to make sure what's in there.

Small electronics should not be a problem. If you have any questions just google "airline security information" or something like that, and find the up to date info on what you can and cannot take.

But yes, no liquids or gels of any kind. There are special rules that will allow you to bring some, but they're complicated and so just put all that stuff into your checked bag.

That shouldn't be a problem.

Here you might find this (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm)useful.

Along with the famous 3-1-1 (http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm) rule, which should clear your questions on liquids.

The only pain in the ass electronics are laptops. Everytime you have to go thru xrays you'll have to take it out of the bag and put it in a tray by itself, nothing else with it.

Just like Mara said, wear shoes that you can slip in an out rather easily and the same goes for the felt.

As for jewelry, I always wear my watch and stuff when traveling, but when I'm about to pass a security check point, I just stick it one of my backpack's pockets and then it's all good. That way I don't have to put it on the trays and run the risk of stuff falling out of pockets or slipping from the conveyor belts and falling.

Funny, I never had my steel wrist watch triggering the metal detector. Those quality swiss clockworks fool the airport security every time.. :lol

I went though some ridiculously sensitive detectors too. Once, the alarm went off because of the wrapping paper around a pack of chewing gum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra_(gum)).

I have a swanky Air Canada carry-on bag and one large suitcase. I always pack my cords/chargers in my carry-on so they don't get lost >_>;

I wouldn't put anything breakable/fragile in a carry-on either, because sometimes they get tossed around >_<

yes sandals or running shoes (don't usually have metal) are best... definitely don't forget that your wearing steel toed boots and to change your shoes before the airport...

:lol happens to the best of us, Xi. (then again knowing us...should that say the "worst" of us?)

I still haven't quite figured out how I'm packing everything...I get the feeling my suitcase should have a decent chunk of space left in it since I'm leaving the giant camera at home.

Just gotta figure out how to make it so the bottle of vodka I'm dragging along with me doesn't get killed.

Hmm...and since I wasn't able to do anything yesterday and the day before I'll have to see if I have the time/energy to make the cookies I was planning on bringing. :(

Uh... approximately it's like 24" x 12" x10" give or take. I'm pretty sure it's supposedly a max of 25 lbs, though I've never had anyone weigh my carry on.

Damn...
I can't bring my 1934 Underwood typewriter!
My costume is ruined now!

I'm trying to keep everything down to just the carry on and messenger bag.

If you have some big wooly socks.... put the bottle into a large plastic bag, then pull a couple of socks over it. As many as possible. Or shrinkwrap. Either does the trick. And then just make sure to place it somewhere in the dead center of your suitcase, well in the middle between layers of clothes.

<--- has lots of experience importing bottles of schnapps and beer into the US :rolleyes:p

Blech, there was a problem with my card and the car reservation didn't go through. Now the rate is almost twice as much as it was the other day. Hopefully I'll find room to squeeze in to someone else's car.

I'm pretty damn thankful, now, that I sprang for the extra day of vacation so I could head out on Thursday like everyone else.
