NEW YORK - Writer-director John Hughes, Hollywood’s youth impresario of the 1980s and ’90s who captured and cornered the teen and pre-teen market with such favorites as “Home Alone,” “The Breakfast Club” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” died Thursday, a spokeswoman said. He was 59.
Hughes died of a heart attack during a morning walk in Manhattan, Michelle Bega said. He was in New York to visit family.
I wasn't expecting this at all :( What a horrible year for celebrity deaths.
Whether you remember him for Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Home Alone, or Ferris Bueller's Day Off, it's a damn shame any way you cut it. For myself, Ferris Bueller will always be my favorite movie he's done.
Fun fact: inf FBDO, when you see Cameron's hand pushing the button on the answering machine, that's actually John's. He said that no one seemed to be able to capture the utter malaise in a hand gesture, so he did it himself.

Planes, Trains, & Automobiles is my all time favorite comedy and She's Having a Baby is probably my wife's and I's favorite couple's movie. He will be missed.

I just wrote a "major theme" revolving around FB, several paragraphs long - actual good stuff for a change. What happens? Kerplunk! Down the ethernet rabbit hole!
Ah well. Goodbye Mr. Hughes. :(

Well, this sucks. Another cultural icon from my high school and college years has died. Dammit.
Sixteen Candles has always been my favorite John Hughes movie. Long Duck Dong, anyone?
*sigh*
So long, Mr. Hughes. And thanks for all the great memories.

He made some of the movies I hate the most. Sixteen Candles? Ferris Bueller? Pretty in Pink? Fuck that.
On the other hand he made some utter pearlers and the home defence in Home Alone I would contend is the single funniest thing I have seen in a theatre - the rest of Home Alone was bloody awful but that 20 minute glorious slapstick riot......
Looking at this list of moives was very surprising. He really did dominate the 80's and I had no idea he was involved with half of them. Planes, Trains and Automobiles? Really?
Not a bad life's work. Even if I could willingly shoot him for the pain of Sixteen Candles. Or should I shoot the teacher that forced us to watch it as an assignment?
