There seem to be a lot of American made films out there which involves the British and war in one fashion or another. So, I've decided to put up a poll about it. Of the listed movies below (which doesn't entail all of the movies made, only a sampling), which one is your favorite British war movie?

I've only seen one of those but it was fantastic. :)

I wouldn't say Braveheart is a British movie o_O. Scottish independence and all. But if it wins the poll there will be some savory taste of irony. I'll accept it.

You have a very..... odd definition of British War movie. And you left out Guns of Navorne, the Magnificent Seven and if you want to keep this loose definition.. The Great Escape just to start with.

(The English Patient? What on earth were you thinking including that crapfest ?????)

The defintion of British war movie that I'm using for this poll is any movie which involves British military forces fighting. Torwards that end, I tried to select movies in which the primary fighting forces were British.

Well, Scotland is part of the island of Great Britain, whether they like it or not :lol

For now, at least. :shakefist

If we're talking about ironic choices though, I think "King Arthur" probably qualifies. That was about a Roman and a bunch of Knights who were drawn from other non-British areas of the Roman Empire, fighting against the Saxons (who had not yet settled in Britain yet). Sure, it happened in Britain, but that's about it. I suppose Miss <s>anorexic</s> Knightley was a Briton, but they were hardly the main focus. That's like calling Saving Private Ryan a "British" war film because there were hypothetically British soldiers there at the time (though the story of course never admits to that - you Americans won the war all on your own, didn't you?)

It was also a steaming pile of crap - though mildly entertaining to watch - but hey.

Not sure if Gallipoli should count or not, but I think it should.

Heh, Bedknobs and Broomsticks or The War Lover would fit in this definition.

OK, I know you meant a historic war (hey BN a B dealt with WWII!) with believable characters and an attempt to fit with some reference of accuracy, well as far as any biased account, assuming in this case..British! ....

I kind of like the spirit of my reasoning better, though.. which opens it up to a wider calliope of delights. :D

Yeah, what Lok said...

I looked up the movie summary, haven't ever seen it. But it is based on the Dardanelles campaign, as I supected, although according to the wiki article, told entirely from the ANZAC contribution standpoint, although British and French forces were also heavily involved.

The original plan as to force the straights using pre-dreadnought battleships, but that didn't end too well, what with all the minefields and shore guns. The second attempt is the one the movie depicts, bombarding the shorelines and landing troops to silence the gun batteries, before marching parallel to the straights to sieze Constantinople. The entire point of the campaign was to force an early capitulation of the Ottoman Empire and to open up a supply corridor to Russia.

Being that the movie focuses primarily on the ANZACs fighting against the Turks and German supporters, I would say no, it probably doesn't count.

Okay, so you're initial post is talking about American-made war films, but still. Zulu.

How dare you exclude Michael Caine from this poll! :shakefist

Edit:

Hmm. According to wiki, it was distributed by a subdivision of MGM, so that's sort of American, even though it was made by and Englishman and a Welshman...

Funny thing is, I was originally going to include Zulu, but I substitued it at the last second for English Patient.

Hey if we get shoehorned in with Last of the Mohicans then there you go. I'm having a hard time parsing the scope of this thing in the first place so don't blame me.

Last of the Mohicans takes place before or during the Revolutionary War (before I think?) so its certainly 'the British!' fighting the American Indians. Or something.

Its been a while since I've seen it. Daniel Day Lewis.... *SWOON*

It's told (sort of) from the British perspective during the Seven Years war between France and Great Britian for control of the North American colonies, with each nation enlisting the help of native tribes. It's as much a British film as is Four Feathers, and Bridge on the River Kwai.

"It's just the Rebels, sir... they're here."

"My God, man! Do they want tea?"

"No, I think they're after something a bit more than that, sir. I don't know what it is, but they've brought a flag."

"Damn, that's dash cunning of them."

I'm doing this at you as hard as I possibly can.

That movie was the biggest pump fake I've seen since Reign of Fire.

HEY GUYS, DO YOU LIKE HORATIO HORNBLOWER, WRATH OF KHAN, AND OTHER EPIC TALES OF NAVAL COMBAT? GREAT!!!...

I just refused to vote because there are just so many bad and wrong choices. There are so many other choices that are in generally better.

But Bridge is indeed the best choice and even with better choices, would STILL should rule.

whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy......

The only sort-of interesting part of that movie is that Matthew McConnawannadingdong didn't play a slurry-drawled weiner exclusively cast for the female audience like he has done in every movie in his career.

Why were there apache helicopters fighting dragons on the movie posters? WHERE ARE MY HELICOPTER VS DRAGON FIGHT SCENES???!!! :mad

Apparently it was cut and added into 'Dragon Wars', the only decent action scene of what is basically the worst mythical meets reality movie ever made.

Bridge is the best on this list. Not sure why the Patriot is on this list. It is so historically inaccurate. I get tired of people asking about that damn movie at my current job.

You know what I hated about Dragon Wars? The fact that there was no concept of a good plot and even more so than that, no one was suprised. No one. Not even the Token Black guy turned his head up to the sky and said "Monkey Forester! What on earth is that? Its a freaken Dragon!? Why Are their Dragons?!" You know in movies where weird stuff happens on earth, there is supose to be a token black guy freaking out. Transformers? Had the hacker guy. Independence Day? Will Smith. But no. No One was suprised and Everyone seemed to know that they were coming...

ok done

Its just a movie that I enjoyed watching.:)
A two hour long story on a Saturday night.

Its rare that I get too worked up about a movie. It is what it is, either it was a complete waste of time or it was fun. That movie was fun.
I didnt see the posters, so cant say I knew I missed anything with the helicopters/dragons.

Historical movies I take a bit more seriously, but even then its still just people trying to tell a story, its not like Im studying history from it.

You, on the other hand, seem quite passionate! I probably like sooooooo many movies that you hate :lol
