He truly was a one-of-a-kind legend. So great at what he did, and always came across as smart, self-effacing, witty, and oh so talented at what he did. I don't know if we'll ever see anyone like him in the media again, what with how the "news" business is nowadays.
RIP! :cry

This was posted on another board I frequent, and I enjoyed it so much - I thought I'd re-post it here.
Walter Cronkite was the voice that got me through the Kennedy assassination and the shock and grieving the entire nation went through. His was the voice that made all the space launches "happen" for me and the one who brought us together in the joyful times, the tense times, and the sad ones that a space-struck nation experienced - and explained what was happening. It seems so bittersweet that he will not be here for the fortieth anniversary of the first moon walk next week. And, of course, he talked us through the whole Vietnam era. His was a unifying presence and an influence that is hard to comprehend today, but I am so glad that I experienced it. Rest in peace, Walter.

It's amazing... he retired from his regular news broadcasting job in 1981, almost 30 years ago, yet his influence was so large that even people born after he retired knew who he was and were able to appreciate what he meant to television and journalism, without ever seeing him do a newscast.
Farewell, Mr. Cronkite.

"And that's the way it is."
Walter Cronkite, to me, is quite probably one of the few people willing to be objective in reporting an event while simultaneously also being skilled at covering it. Far, far too much of news reporting today includes "spin" and there is often a gap of even-handed treatment that leaves me wanting. It is part of what has turned me off of TV. In a very strange way, Cronkite actually does represent a time of honesty and integrity that his successors have not accomplished as well as he.
To a newscasting legend, my hat is off. Farewell, Walter. Farewell.
