Don't quite know what to think of this. I absolutely love the cartoon, but I worry about the film adaptation. Anywho, here ya go.

M Night Shamalamadingdong (I can never spell his name). Really? Huh, not what I would have expected.
I hope they remember that the comedy and emotional sincerity was what made Avatar awesome, not just the neat powers.

I'm not intimately familiar with Avatar - I've seen it and enjoyed it a few times, but it isn't as if I've seen every episode ever created. From what I have seen, I know I'll definately be checking out the movie, but I'm torn over whether or not I should binge the series on DVD / elsewhere before I go. In the one hand, versing myself with the series might help me to appreciate the characters that they ultimately include a little better; on the other, it might just mean that it'll bug me more if/when they get something wrong. :\
From what I've seen in the trailer and the handful of production stills thus far, its struck me at how "right" everything looks. They managed to make a bald kid with an arrow on his head - which looks somewhat kickass in the series - into something that doesn't look completely laughable in real life either. I'm not sure whether the filmmakers deserve the credit for doing such a tasteful job, or if its the artists from the series that deserve the kudos for making life so easy for the filmmakers with their style.

Shyamalan's last few movies have been flops. I guess this looks like something with more mainstream appeal. I hope people will get their value from the ticket money this time around.

lmao. It's so true.
Can't say I'm familiar with Avatar at ALL. Never seen an episode despite a decent number of people telling me I should check it out. The trailer doesn't totally grab me, I must admit. Maybe it's just because I'm not familiar with the characters/story and so I don't have a previous connection, not sure.

I'm interested to see what M.Night does with a script he didn't write. He is a capable film maker, imo, just his choice of scripts to make recently have been.... unfortunate.
Stick to directing, not to writing, that's my suggestion. I think this has a real chance of being good. :)

In seriousness though, it sounds like he is credited more for the screenplay than the actual story and characters. I suspect the other two did most of the actual writing.

Well, poo. :mneh But he didn't originate the idea of the story, which is sort of my point. Yeah. ^_^;
His 'original ideas' have sort of sucked.

I hope that they at least try to follow the storyline of the series, at least a little bit, and include most of the characters from the cartoon series.

I've seen some of the cartoon... enough to recognise where it's accurate, but not enough to get pissed off if they go wrong anywhere.
The stuff in the trailer doesn't tell you anything about the story; no wonder it's a bit boring. From the look of it though, they're going to take the nail and beat it repeatedly over the head with awesome. :ohno

If the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are correct, there will be no circle in movie hell low enough for Shyamalan.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/last_airbender/
Consensus so far is that not only is this just a stupid special effects movie, but it's a poorly executed one with wooden acting, walls of exposition, and a story that still manages to be incomprehensible to the average movie-goer. Worse, they're saying the main characters are lifeless and without personality. The ignominy of a post-production contortion into fake 3D is trivial compared to that.
If this is true, Shyamalan completely failed to understand what made the cartoon show great.

I have zero interest in this movie, but I do have to say that it really is a shame how far M. Night Shyamalan has fallen if these reviews are accurate. Lady in the Water and The Happening were bad enough, but this just might end his career. :(

I don't think it will be the end but no studio will allow him to write his own material for the foreseeable future. He is still a capable director just needs to stay away from the script.

I'm far more disappointed that now we'll likely never see a movie adaptation that does the Avatar series justice. The depth of the story and profundity of the characters is unparalleled in children's animation; yes, it's a kids' cartoon show through and through, but it's also darned good storytelling. I'm sure there were significant challenges to overcome in the adaptation of distilling a season of twenty stories into a single movie, but even a competent screenwriter and director should have been able to put together a solid film from such a strong property. This is some Eragon-level crap right here. The series deserved far better.

The movie was honestly better then the critics were claiming it to be.
That being said, there were a few issues I didn't care for.
The main two things I didn't care for was the cutting out of a lot of the humor that went side in side with the serious scenes in Book 1. That, and the character assassinations for a couple of the Fire Nation characters, Fire Lord Ozai and General Juo being the main two. Both of them were portrayed as being sniveling, weepy, and constantly worried characters. Ozai was missing all of his sinister darkness sitting behind the fire throne kind of portrayal from the cartoon. IMO, they basically gave him a chancellor Valorum style character as far as behavior and mannerisms/acting went.
But apart from that, IMO, this is one of those movies that's better seen in the theatres than at home. But beware, I've heard the 3D is crap compared to just seeing in regular style like we did.

I.... errr..... saw about 20 mins of TLA and Park can not be more wrong - this isn't just an insult to the amine but this is just a flat out utterly terrible movie in all respects. I'm not going to put in my usual hyperbole I use for something I dont like because this movie is just so bad that I feel I just have to make it clear I'm not trolling. That's seriously all I could put up with and just for background I LOVE Avatar and own DVD's etc - which is huge for me, I usually dislike anime intensly. Not this one.
Seriously, just do not see it and instead buy the DVD's of the original anime.

Actually, I'm about right on target. I knew it would be a slaughter as, c'mon, they're taking the first season of an awesome anime, and turning it into a real movie, and it's Hollywood that's doing it. I think we all know how that's going to turn out.
But, what I was saying was, it could have been a lot, lot, worse. At least they got about half of the stuff right and made it a watchable movie. Anyone who cries otherwise obviously hasn't watched a lot of Hollywood RL adaptions of popular cartoons/novels/etc.

You mean like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter?
There is absolutely no excuse for screwing up a golden property like Avatar as badly as Shyamalan did. What did he screw up? The characters. That's not "half the stuff" - that's the heart and soul of Avatar. The one thing they got right was the art design. Arguably, Shyamalan still knows what looks pretty on screen, and the art department really did a wonderful job on costume and location designs. But that cannot excuse a horrible script with bad pacing and incomprehensibly bad dialogue.
We do not have to hold Avatar to a lower standard because it's a "children's cartoon." It is some of the finest storytelling in American animation. What we got was not even a mediocre transfer to the silver screen. Instead, the source material was somehow downgraded to Eragon-level crap.

Every word you have typed is objectively wrong. TLA is a unwatchable piece of complete garbage in every possible way for a movie to be bad. And I have seen Hollywood do popular books - hell from all accounts Hollywood took the unreadable utter shit called Twilight:Eclipe and made it so you only contemplated suicide if forced to view it, rather than offing yourself immediatly. And then as well as already stated examples, we have Watchmen, Sin City and good grief there a whole bunch of book and comic conversions that work really well.
And frankly, ANYONE could have done a better job - fo example, what about the the scene - fuck spoilers, no one should watch this garbage so here's why - where they have a dozen or so Earth Benders doing crazy martial arts to make their bending work - and you literally have ONE TINY ROCK FLOATING SLOWLY?????? Or the fact they got the very basics wrong - like Aang's name? Hell, where else do I start on this misreble wreck?
This was not bad film making, this was sheer incompetence and excusing it as "Oh well Hollywood" when there's been plenty of examples of well loved literature being translated to the screen very well is bullshit.
It's so bad that it even fails to be worth watching as one of those really terrible movies that you laugh at. Silly rock bending scene excluded - yes this is worse than Uwe Boll bad. Uwe Boll is silly bad and worth laughing at. This is inexcusably worse.
