I predict...

1. Transformers 2: 185.22M (5 days)

Yep, that's right. 185M 5-day gross. That would make it only second to The Dark Knight's all time 5 day opening record of $203.8M. That also means, it would smash the 5-day opening record for a film debuting on a wednesday at $152.4 (spider-man 2).

Anyone going higher? :lol

I think it is going to have very bad WOM if the reviews tell us anything.

Also nobody edit your posts just add the other movies in a new post.

I think in this case, the WOM is not going to be nearly as bad as the reviews. It currently has a A- at yahoo user reviews (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809943432/info).

That being said, I think the reviews are probably right in the sense that the sequel is not as good as the original transformers movie. It will probably be entertaining enough to please the vast majority of the average moviegoer though, at least during the opening weekend.

Well I think it will keep anybody who didn't see the first one in theaters from going to see it. I know I have no interest now after seeing those reviews. I thought about it because I did see the first one on DVD and thought it was a good movie. Now I think all it will do is keep it from making more than 350-375.

Who is this person who didn't see the first one? ;) They weren't going to see this one anyway, regardless of the reviews.

1. Transformers: RotF - $168.29 M

Well those who saw it on DVD like me. The reviews turned me off. It just will keep it from making 400 million but 350+ is hell a lot of money and I think only one movie could beat it and that would be Avatar.

Don't forget guys: This is the first real big summer blockbuster popcorn film that is not based on a franchise that had already more than 2 entries.
I guess there is still a lot of money on the street for movies even in our current times.

Care to make a bet? :p

I think you are looking way too hard at the critics (if it's rotten tomatoes score you're looking at). Most of those reviews are actually not that terrible, it's just the threshold for getting a fresh rating. You need at least 3/5 stars, or 2.5/4 to get a fresh rating, and many of those reviews are just beneath that threshold. Those same critics roasted the original movie, or gave it lukewarm reviews. The consensus seems to be it is an action packed visual extravaganza, but lacking in the deeper qualities of film making. Duh. It's the biggest summer popcorn movie of the year, and it is about giant robots trashing each other. What did they expect?

I also think it's a huge mistake waiting for DVD release, because no other movie that I know of benefits as much of a high screen resolution as the original Transformers movie. There is so much visual effects and fast moving action, it is hard to track what is going on at low resolution screeens. I had to watch it twice in the theaters just to absorb all that was happening. Then when the DVD was released, I was appaled by all the details lost due to the format. It was like missing 3/4th of the movie. You need 1080p on a big screen at the bare minimum (with a top of the line home theater system), IMO, and even that is not enough compared to 4K digital movie theater projections and 35mm. DVD is simply inadequate for Transformers, and I suspect even more so for the sequel.

We're planning on catching this in IMAX this weekend, should the stars/babysitters align.

Yog

^^ I'm envious about your IMAX screen. We had one in Oslo, but then they shut it down just when full length movies on IMAX were starting to take off.

Also, Box Office Mojo says Transformers made about $16M in midnights, and 60M overall first day.... on a non holiday WEDNESDAY. :cyduck
(and in 3,000 theaters, rather than the 4,234 full theater wide)

Check this chart of reference:

Right now, I think this is between CMJ and Lykaios, with the odds being in Lykaios favor. I think 190M+ 5-day is very likely, and even 200M is a strong possibility, depending on thursday numbers.

I have a blue ray so quality is almost never a issue for me. I disagree with you about the critics. It has a 4.0/10 rating which is horrible. That makes a major difference for me and will keep me from paying 8-10 bucks to see it. As for the weekend I still think it will be heavily frontloaded and still don't see 400 million. It will probably be #1 in the U.S, unless Avatar really shocks us. Potter will beat it WW. It did horrible in Japan and just average in the U.K this past weekend.

Michael Bay! I want my brains back!
This was such hilarious mindless fun but I am having a hard time to call it a great movie. It was good but it was too mind blowing to really reflect on it while watching the movie.
Oh and BTW it is the best recruitment video for the US-Army since Top Gun.
The US Army steals the show again from the Autobots at the end of this movie.

That is part of my problem. I hate Michael Bay. I find most of movies garbage.
