View Full Version : iPhone apps!

If a mod deems this something to merge with the Useful Software thread at the top of the forum, I'm cool with that. However, since people have apparently picked up iPhones recently, I thought a new topic might be in order.

So, the iPhone can do many neat things including storing small applications. And there are many! Some of the cool ones I have found so far are below:

Bump: A clever program, Bump is an app designed to allow you to exchange iPhone contact information. You can exchange things like your name, phone number, and address with another iPhone user. How do you do it? Well, each person must have the Bump app on their iPhone and enabled, of course. However, once you do, just hold the phone in your hand and do a fist bump with your buddy! It's that easy.

Flixster: This is a local movie time app. I haven't had occasion to use it yet so I can't say much about it, but from what I've seen I like it.

Urbanspoon: Restaraunt finder! If you want, you can search for a restaraunt by location, food genre (Italian, Greek, etc), or restaraunt name if you know it. The awesome thing about this is it has a randomizer function. Let's say you and your friends are in the mood for some Italian but don't know what's around. You can lock your location and desired cuisine type into the search function and then shake the iPhone. The randomizer will then choose something that meets your criteria.

Pandora radio: That's right, there's a pandora app for the iPhone. If you aren't familiar with Pandora, it's a radio feed on the web. You can listen to pre-existing Pandora stations, or create your own station by typing in the name of an artist you like. Pandora will then play songs from that artist and similar artists in a commercial-free feed. Great if you just want some quick listening without having to sift through your music library.

That's all I have for the moment. Anyone else got something to share?

Stuff that I have been enjoying playing with:

Lightsaber: Kind of self explanatory. It turns your phone into a lightsaber!

Last.fm: Similar to Pandora (mentioned above). I know some people here already use the last.fm website, but for those who don't... it's a program which tracks the music you listen to and then recommends artists you might like, based on your listening patterns. The iPhone app does exactly the same thing.

C25K: This one isn't free, but for anyone doing the C25K program who wants to use their own music without having to time when running/walking intervals begin/end, it's pretty sweet. You can also link it up to your Facebook account, to provide automatic updates on your progress to friends :)

Shakespeare: All of Shakespeare's works in a handy little app. There are a few other reading related apps out there, but I have yet to find one that stands out as being noteworthy. I mention this one only because it is a simple interface and has all of the Bard's works for free :D

Shazam: If you hear a song and want to know what it is, run this app and it will identify it!

Hah, yes, I forgot about Lightsaber. It's ridiculously cute, although I think I'd only enjoy using it to pretend duel someone for about 20 seconds.

Here are some of the apps I have. I tend to have apps that are for the same thing, but I like to have options and choices and variety.

Facebook: Self explanatory. Doesn't have all the features of just going online on the phone and signing in, but it's easy to use and gives mainly everything you need.

Pro Football: Football news, updates, stats and other such things. I have it tailored for Bills. It was the first football app that I found that seemed decently enjoyable, but if there is a better one out there, I'd be willing to switch. Free.

AIM: Aim for the phone. If you don't want to pay huge txting fees, this is your free way. Just set phone numbers to your aim contacts (or also send messages to your normal phone contacts who don't have aim) and it's just like texting. For free!

Myspace: Also self explanatory. Doesn't get much use anymore since myspace sucks to me.

Urbanspoon: Really good app if your city or current place of being is. Not so cool when it has no idea where you live. *shakes fist*:grumble

SnapTell: You take a picture of a product and it will compare prices and find the cheapest.

iBracket: College basketball bracket app. Which I forgot to even use during March Madness. -_-

CBB Live: College basketball updater with games, sports, standings, etc.

At Bat Lite: MLB app with updates, games, news, etc.

Pandora: Mmm radio-y goodness

Backgrounds: Has a buttload of backgrounds to choose from that you can download and use as your own background on the main screen of your phone.

Twitterrific: Tweet from your phone!

Kindle: Amazon. I think the app was free. Could be mistaken.

Flixter: Movies and show times at the tip of your fingers!

Stanza: Something kind of like Kindle, kind of not. It's a book app.

Around Me: A really cool and fun app. It finds your current location and not only does it find restaurant locations, but gas stations, banks, theaters.. .you name it, it finds it. Really useful app on vacations.

Icanhascheeseburger: For all your Lolcatz needs on the go.

Amazon.com: Online shopping on the go!

Tip Star: Ever wonder how much tip you should leave? This is a decent app for that, with a basic formula that is on the money (ha, get it?) more times than not. Based off of number of people the check is for, how much the check is, and how good your server was.

Yahoo!: Ok, so I don't like using Safari and if there is an app for a website, I will use it over the internets.

TWC: The Weather Channel app. More comprehensive than the weather app that comes with the iPhone.

Slacker Radio: Gives me different options than Pandora does. More geared towards metal rock punk and whatnot.

Beautymeter: Do not judge!! -_- ...basically a "hot or not" rating app. ...Definitely NSFW. But because of it, I want to move to Germany.:love

100PushUps: For the 100 push-up challenge. Very good app that helps keep time between sets, logs your activity, gives you tips, and keeps track of what week you're on and tells you how many push-ups to do. To be used in conjuncture with the website.

iFitness: Not Free. Gives a comprehensive listing of a bunch of different exercises for your entire body. Also gives stretches, cardio help, and routines aimed at specific areas. Want a full body work out, or just focus on your arms? This has it plus more. Very useful if you don't have a gym membership, and only limited resources at home. Personally, I have a barbell with weights, so I can find stuff that use that, and make my own routine around that.

200 Situps: Same as the 100 Push up app, but for the sit up challenge. I have yet to start, but will.

Y! Fan Pro: Not Free. If you play a lot of fantasy sports, and use Yahoo! as your main provider for them, this app is for you. Allows you to manage your team and league when you don't have access to your comp.

IndieBound: A book app. Allows you to find bookstores, books and whatnot that are on the "Indie Bestsellers List" and "Indie Next Lists". Not mainstream. (?) Gear more towards local booksellers over your B&N's and Borders.

PhoneFlix: Netflix for your phone! Add to your queue and browse movies you will want to watch.

myWireless: AT&T app that lets you view and pay your bill. And prolly other stuff too.

GoogleEarth: Does the whole GoogleEarth thing from your phone.

AudioBooks: Kind of like the other book apps, but this one you download audio books! Great for long walks or car rides.

Google: See Yahoo!

Sportscenter: For all of your sports (ESPN influenced) needs!

FunnyPics: Kinda like what you find on fukung.net but ..tamer.

CoolFacts: "The sun is 330,330 times larger than the earth"

Planets: This, from what I can tell, is your complete amateur astrological guide! Tells you positioning of the sun, moon, where to find planets, stars, constellations, and all that fun star gazing stuff.

WootWatch: Because really, why not? Track the woot-offs and see what the woots are for the day.

And... That's not listing all the sexy girls in bikini/lingerie apps I have, nor the games on there!

Daily Plate by Livestrong.com: not free, but useful calorie tracker, punch in what you eat on the go and it calculates how many calories left you can eat for the day. Also calculates how many calories you burn from your workouts and adjusts accordingly.

Balance: super simple check register. Can only keep track of one account, but I only need to keep track of my checking out and about anyway.

iMapMyFitness: Uses the gps to log runs, bike rides, etc. time and loads it up to MapMyFitness.com

iProcrastinate: task list

Night Stand: old school looking digital clock, I just like the look of it and so I turn it on and prop it up next to my computer screen to keep an eye on the time.

White Noise: different sounds to fall asleep to. White noise, chimes, rain, ocean, etc.

Hubble: Images from Hubble! =)

Bump for additional apps!

Daily Plate, iFitness, C25K, White Noise, and Facebook, and Wootwatch are all apps I've download at the suggestion of others. I have yet to use Facebook, but the other apps are all pretty spiffy. In addition to that, I've snagged the below:

FML: An abbreviation for "F#ck my Life". Feeling down and need a pick-me-up? Check this site out and see how FML is a website where people post stories of the semi-terrible things that have happened to them. It's a bit like the novelization of America's Funniest Home Videos. I check it out for the occasional pick me up.

AllRecipes: Guess. :)

Currency: A quick currency converter so you work out an exchange rate on the fly.

Dictionary.com: A dictionary and thesaurus rolled into one.

Drinks Free: Many drink recipes!

eBay: App is what it sounds like. Check eBay for stuff from your phone.

Fandango: Another movie ticket app, covers theaters not covered by Flixter.

Paypal: Access a Paypal account through your phone.

slydial: Puts you through directly to someone's voicemail.

Unblockme Free: A puzzle game with a ton of maps.

mint.com: This is an app that lets you access a mint.com account from your iPhone. If you haven't used mint.com before, I find it to be a really great budgeting tool since it tracks things like bank account activity, bill payments, loan balances, etc. You do have to give it account name and password information, but I find it so helpful it's worth it.

That's all for now!

Bumping because I should be getting an iPhone in two weeks and I want to get my apps lined up in my wishlist!

So, lay 'em on me. What other apps (other than the above) are needed? Free is preferred, but let me know them all. :D

Awsome note: much better than the built in note taking app and looks sexy too. Also it can sync with google docs.

NewsRack: Excellent RSS reader.

Twitter: Free twitter app.

2Do: In my opinion, THE best doto app on the iphone. Looks sweet too.

Comics, Marvel and DC Comics: These are excellent digital comic book readers.

Soundhound: Alternative to Shazam.

Vouchercloud: Free vouchers for resteraunts and various other things. Its free but you have to register. Could save a few pounds.

Scramble2: Boggle type word game which can be played online. Free and brilliant!

Words with friends: A scrable type game which you play over the internet. Free version available with adverts.

Chess with friends: As above, only chess!

Two great websites to keep an eye on. Appadvice.com for all iphone related news. Best I have found. Also, freeappaday.com. Every day they convince someone to have a usually paid for app free for 24 hours. Usually its a game and a lot of it is rubbish, but for free its pretty good. They have had many good apps go free for a day on there though so its always worth keeping your eye on.

Get a real smart phone that is Android based. iPhone's are seriously crap.

Not just "I don't like being a cool kid" crap but "This is an overpriced piece of shit that doesn't wok anywhere near as well as other phones" crap.

Anroid phones have the apps AND are easier to use, let alone the better hardware. Almost every "feature" Apple is crapping on about I had a year ago and I dont even have that great a smartphone.

Yeah, the Droid that got put out earlier this year is a better piece of hardware than the iPhone 4 and it doesn't require you to run everything under the sun through iTunes. That said, I don't have any active complaints with my iPhone since it does what I want it to do. I haven't really come across any apps beyond the ones I already posted about that I can't live without. If I do, I'll mention 'em.

Yes and I'm recommending the app "Get a real phone". All Apple users should try it out one day, it rocks.

Maybe create another thread for Droid apps then? This isn't constructive.

Avoid them as they are in fact crap is very constructive. It saves time and money, which is always a good thing.

I've been really enjoying playing Galaxy on Fire and Galaxy on Fire 2. They're not free, but they're extremely immersive and easy to play.

I know this is a horrific bump, but if you have an iPad you need to check out Lovelace & Babbage, a comic app full of fascinating footnotes and things I'd never heard of before. There is a free comic on the Origns of L&B and then another you can purchase, but the download is worth it for the free content. :)

comiXology is my favourite iPad app by far. Even if you don't want to buy any comic books, they have lots for free!
