Design Specifications

The Carin is a top-secret Inquisitoriate vessel designed and produced at an unknown shipyard. Designed at the same time as the Exorcist-class, these vessels are part of the Inquisitoriate’s effort to produce their own ships-of-line and the first ever designed vessel with a purely combat role.

These vessels are the first to lack the complex sensor masking systems so common to Inquisitorial ships. With subtlety out the window, the Cairn is very much a hard-hitting brawler meant to punch holes through enemy lines to allow allied vessels a clear path to a rebellious world.

Unlike standard Imperial warships where hundreds of guns are in fixed fire arcs, most weapons batteries on Inquisitorial vessels have multiple fire arcs in order to bring a large percentage of the ship’s armaments to bear and to cut down on the sheer number of weapons needed.

The Cairn’s most devastating weapons are its dorsal mounted plasma torpedo launchers. Plasma is heated in a pinched magnetic field by energy supplied from the ship's reactors. True to the Inquisitoriate’s reputation of using unorthodox technology and tactics, the plasma torpedo is a strange and extremely powerful, yet the way the technology is used is brutishly primitive. Plasma is always kept hot and ready to fire in special storage tanks.

To collect and direct the chaotic phase in a controllable trajectory, charged plasma atoms are shunted into a magnetic bubble, created by a series of powerful linear accelerators in the launcher’s firing tube. The plasma torpedo is then fired, and is guided towards its target by a long-reaching magnetic field projected by the tube. While the plasma is always stored ready to fire, once depleted, it will take several minutes for the chamber to cycle in fresh plasma.

Once a target is hit by the plasma, the magnetic bubble destabilizes and collapses, sending plasma splashing over the hull. The plasma will continue burning through armor plating at a rapid rate, feeding the flames from the oxygen within the ship’s compartments. The only sure way to stop the plasma burning completely through the hull is to vent oxygen from the compartments in the plasma’s path.

Best if used against an unshielded target, or if fired in successive volleys where the first torpedo or two will knock out the shields to clear the way for other torpedoes.

In addition to these, the Cairn-class does carry a strong payload of weapons batteries. It may not have the sheer number of guns as many ships-of-the-line, but multi-arc weapons allow it to compete handily in duels.

Cairn’s are heavily armored and shielded, sacrificing the speed and stealth of other Inquisitorial vessels, for raw hitting power. It has been the concern of Inquisitor Zeera, head of INQ Naval operations, that a single Cairn might be overwhelmed when facing multiple adversaries.

As of the posting of this design, only three Cairn-class cruisers have been constructed. Their existence is kept secret even from the greater Inquisitoriate
