If I'm perfectly honest with you, I cannot abide much of that period drama tosh of lords and ladies and high society. It's just not for me. No, sir. But now one of the genre's most beloved novels, Pride and Prejudice, has been given a make-over by a writer called Seth Grahame-Smith... a make-over which appeals immensely to my own sense and sensibilities:

It's Darcy of the Dead! :D

Yes, that's right, the decrepid, shambling undead rise up from the grave in this revised, and dare I say improved, version of Jane Austin's period masterpiece! The opening line reads:

"It's a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains."

There's an article about the book here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7985728.stm) and you can check out the first few pages on Amazon.com here (http://www.amazon.com/Pride-Prejudice-Zombies-Classic-Ultraviolent/dp/1594743347). I can't get over how great an idea this is and cannot believe it hasn't been done sooner. Surely this has to be an entry for the Book Club, right? :eee

Here's a description of the novel from ThinkGeek

As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton - and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers - and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Because this isn't your English Teacher's copy of Pride and Prejudice. This is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen's beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. That's right, zombie scenes have been inserted into the classic text to turn this novel into a roaring, updated, blood-fest! Complete with 20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice), this insanely funny expanded edition will introduce Jane Austen's classic novel to new legions of fans. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - Jane would be proud.

The author is working on his next book now, the meticulously-researched Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Should be awesome. =)
