I figure I start this one now, we have two films so far.
1. Paul Blart: Mall cop $130,583,000
2. Taken $112,924,000
Watchman should make it, but it may not make more than Blart which is surprising. Monsters and Aliens probably has the best chance to take the top spot before the may films.
As for the year this is going to be tough to predict right now, this is what I will predict.
1. Transformers 2 410
2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince 303
3 Avatar 290 (This is a mystery for me right now hell it could break out even more)
4. Terminator 4 Salvation 260
5. Up 225
6. Wolverine 205
7. Gi Joe 202
8. Night at the Museum 2 200
9. Sherlock Holmes 192
10. Monsters and Aliens 190
Other possibilities for top 10, New Moon, Public Enemies, Star Trek, Angels and Demons, Lincoln (if it gets made for this year), and A Christmas Carol

I'm suprised Mall Cop did as well as it did, it must have been a slow weekend for new releases. o_O
Monsters and Aliens is already halfway to 100m on it's opening weekend, so yeah it definitly looks like it could become a 100 to 150m movie.
I wouldn't be suprised if Wolverine makes more in the neighborhood of 300m.
Although it looks incredibly retarded, I'm going to make a suprise prediction that Dragonball rakes in just above 100m. :ohno

Mall Cop and Taken both surprised me. Mall Cop didn't look like it do 50 million and I thought Taken would do about 75-80 million. I can't see Wolverine doing 300, 225-230 is the most I see it doing. I also don't think Dragonball will do well tracking has been very bad for it. Fast and Furious looks to be the next big hit coming this weekend. It should open over 50.

I think GI Joe could do a bit more then 202. It wouldn't surprise me at least.

Me either I was be a little conservative there. It could do as much as 240 I think. Monsters and Aliens might do more than what I thought it looks like it could do between 200-240 right now. Avatar is the biggest mystery, it could flop or do 400 million. Star Trek is another possibility of a surprise. Some movies like Harry Potter, Up and Wolverine are easy to predict though.

G.I.Joe could be a mixed bag. After seeing some new shots of Cobra Commander and Destro, I am once more not happy about this film, and Cobra Commander might be enough to put old fans off of a repeat viewing, which will severely hurt its numbers.

Fast and Furious looks to be the next big hit coming this weekend. It should open over 50.
It opened for 72 million, so it looks poised to make over 100 million as well. Perhaps.

I cannot believe Paul Blart did that well... it was such a generic mundane movie.

At least it is no loner #1 for the year. You can at least see why Monsters Vs Aliens would do that well.

1. Monster Vs. Aliens $190,733,766
2. Fast and Furious $152,952,195

Two movies shot up this list. Star Trek should take the #1 spot here by the end of the month. I see it making 250-255. It will probably finish 3rd for the summer and probably 4th for the year.

So long as Paul Blart get's pushed off the list... There's something wrong in the movie world when that can make over a hundred mill.

I meant to update this but forgot. Tons of changes with Tranformers being the top film. Harry Potter should become #2 soon with it making over 300 million. The Hangover and The Proposal are the big shocks right now. With the Hangover looking to make 270. Public Enemies could become the 17th film after that will have to wait till GI Joe with Funny People bombing.
I meant to update this but forogt

I really slacked off on this and wasn't going to update except for the monumental success of Avatar. Avatar will definitely pass Transformers 2 and be #1 film, a more deserving #1 film. The question is how high will it go? 450? 500? Could it top Titanic? Should be a fascinating race to watch. Two more films on this list will rise. There could be 10 films over 200 million if both Sherlock and Alvin can make it. Luckily, Twilight won't make too much more money. It should end up around 295 below Harry Potter, although it doesn't deserve to be above Up, The Hangover, and Star Trek. Two more films could make 100 million, with Up in the Air and Precious if either have major Oscar success. Finally compare this list to my predictions. I just about got Transformers and Harry right. I really screwed up on Terminator and Avatar, but it is hard to guess a top 10 in January, but I will attempt to make another prediction.
1. Transformers 2 $402,111,870
2. Avatar $309,011,000
3. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince $301,959,197
4. Up $293,004,164
5. Twilight Saga: New Moon $285,858,000
6. The Hangover $277,322,503
7. Star Trek $257,730,019
8. The Blind Side $200,938,000
9. Monster Vs. Aliens $198,001,228
10. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs $196,573,705

Wow, that is a really long list. Supposedly this was the best year for movies in a while. Movies that made money that is, no guarantee of quality. ;)

Of course inflation has changed things what was once a 100 million movie would have been a 80 million movie not long ago. 2009 was a record year in terms of box office but attendance is still way off from the early part of the decade.

The early part of the decade had those big 3 and a half movie series:
LOTR
this prequel thing some people were talking about all the time
the Matrix (I just recently found out that somebody made a sequel to that movie)
Pirates of the Caribean (unfortunately another guy had the same idea for this movie)

Yeah the first few years had some big movies, add two harry potter movies and Spiderman and that makes it even bigger.
