Most of the time I was thinking: "Wow, it's really windy up here!" or "This is a great view!"

Did really feel like there was much vertigo at all outside of the initial flip or two out the door.

There are a lot of pictures that just look like crap because the jump instructor is grinning at the camera flashing the peace sign while I'm looking straight down lik e a complete clod.

It was a lot fun and the free fall definitely felt a lot longer than the minute/minute-twenty we were plummeting through the sky.

Got to pilot the canopy on the way in too and do some cool twists turns and spins. Unfortunately the photographer was long gone by then (Tandems pop canopies at about 5,000 feet while single-jumpers pop at about 3,000.)

Cleaning out a closet I found a box of old photos that spanned the years we spent in Mhlambanyatsi (the fondest memories I have growing up were here) and because it's a nostalgic kind of night and a beautiful area - or at least it was, before the modern regime took over - I thought I'd share. :)

Mhlambanyatsi is a small town about 20 km southwest of Mbabane. Back in the late 80s/early 90s it was divided into two sections - the newer half where all the shops (there were three) and the motel and fancy houses were, and the old half set back near the brush. Appropriately, they were called the New Village and the Old Village.

This is the New Village, where we used to run or bike to get milk and wrapped soap imported from London for the guest bathroom and, on Fridays, penny sweets for when we listened to Squad Cars on the radio (if anyone wants to hear some of the broadcasts, I'll gladly email them!):

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/oldneighborhoodafrica.jpg

Down from the New Village was the Old Village, where we lived:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/oldvillageafrica.jpg

If you follow the hills all the way down, they give way to brushland and a great big muddy pool of water that we used to swim in. In hindsight that was probably a pretty awful idea and I don't know why our parents used to let us - besides the bacteria, there were hippos living at one end and they're the most aggressive, beastly animals. And we had a pool in our backyard.

The old house - this is the place I'll retire to one day (although the pool has since been filled in):

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/houseafrica.jpg

On the weekends we used to go on these great long drives. Gran would fill a couple of coolers of food to snack on and we'd pile into two or three cars depending on how many of us there were at the time and we'd go all day. I distinctly remember coveting sitting on the window like this because it was a privilege that you were granted once you were nine and it seemed like it would take ages to be that old:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/drivin.jpg

This is my biological mother but that's not the point of this picture. The point is the basket behind her. She's got our younger brother under that blanket and we used to keep him in a basket between Fitz and I in the backseat. It was our job to hold onto the basket so that if we stopped, Sam wouldn't go flying and die. It used to seem like such a chore because as he got older, so did the basket and the wicker frayed and would stab your palm as you bumped along. He survived, though, so we must not have slacked off! :lol

Another one of those things that you don't really catch on to as a kid. The further away from the Villages that you got, the more evident it became how poor a place Swaziland was at the time. Shanties were all over the place and horse and jackered carts were a viable mode of transportation, common as Volvos.

Oh, the fashion. This is Gramps and some of the uncles, presumably stopped and waiting for the women to dish out a meal. Judging by the paved road, we were probably close to Mbabane which is unusual, since we almost never went that way. We must have been picking someone up.:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/grampsafrica.jpg

And dad in his short shorts at a border of some kind (this would make sense if we were in fact heading into the big city):

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/dadafrica.jpg

Annnnnd I sadly suffered the same crap sense of style (oh, such a photogenic face!):

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/lizstylin.jpg

And these last two are just silly, sentimental portraits. Fitz and I were the first of the grandkids that Grandpa ever held for whatever reason - some generational tic that made him nervous around babies. Not sure why we broke that but it probably had something to do with Fitty always being put in rugby shirts (... although Gramps is making his 'c'mere so I can klap you' gesture... :uhoh):

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a266/lizmclellan/gramsandus.jpg

Hahaha, this is Gran and Oom Kent, my dad's older brother, about to perform. We used to do family presentations at do's and gatherings, play guitar and sing and dance. All in costume. :smokin

edit: fun story, when the Winterhawks got started in the 70s they saved on costs by using jerseys from the Blackhawks. That's how we got the logo. :p But instead of a C under the crossed tomahawks on the shoulders its a P.

Yesterday I hit up the thrift store and made out with a brand new wardrobe for fifty bucks, it was amazing. The most amazing find however was a RALPH LAUREN dress for TWO BUCKS. That is cheaper than a footlong at Subway. Also Minnie Mouse-looking espadrilles for fifty cents. Mmhmm steal.

(Aha, lest you think I am a fashionable weekend lady, the photo on the right is what I was wearing five minutes before I took the photo on the left, and what I changed back into. Because it is Saturday: the day of robe loungin'.)

We always used to have half finished or unfinished hammers from pledges who got canned or left during pledge semester, and I remember a few times folks got Real Drunk and then hammer battle happened.

Also we used to practice our golf swings by teeing off on shot glasses in the upstairs hallway, sending glass flying out the storm door. Drunk engineers combine the best ideas and the worst ideas.

Adidas aren't making them anymore, but I got mine off ebay for 25 quid, brand new with tags. Just search for "Star Wars Adidas" :)

Also worth looking at the Star Wars section on Adidas website: http://www.shopadidas.com/star-wars/_/N-1z13svx

Here's some "action" shots of the current range: http://hypebeast.com/2011/07/star-wars-x-adidas-originals-2011-fallwinter-collection/

They quite regularly add new products. The shoes they're making lately haven't been as cool as the original collection from a couple years back but you will occasionally get some cool sweatshirts or hats too.

The bad part is, when I drove with my dad to the Vandy game through Alberta City, it's even worse :( It looks like Fallujah, and that's as of just a few weeks ago, a full half year after the fact.

Alberta City, unlike Tuscaloosa proper, doesn't attract money. They had a hard enough life before the storm. Those people will never recover.

Another skiing photo. Near the top of Montezuma at Arapahoe Basin, I think we're at about 12,500 feet here with about 1.2 miles to the base of the run.

Once there is more snow the goal is to hike to the top of that peak on the right (13,050 feet) and ski down.
