SUNDAY ZOMBIE SLAUGHTER
If you fancy some slaughter, we are trying to run a campaign (or two!) every Sunday at roughly 8PM GMT.
We generally put an announcement up on the SW-Fans Steam group - http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SW-Fans
We have use of a Vent channel, which either myself, Droo, Acacius or Crusader can give you the details for.

BUY LEFT 4 DEAD
Left 4 Dead (http://store.steampowered.com/app/500/)
Left 4 Dead 2 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/550/)
Bundle! (http://store.steampowered.com/sub/2487/) (both games, at a slight discount)

***

I just tried this for the first time on Xbox 360 last night and it was soooo much fun - but I think a big part of the fun comes from the fact that you're playing alongside your friends. So, with that in mind.. does anyone have Left 4 Dead for the PC? I'm thinking about buying it and it would be cool to survive the zombie apocalypse with some of you guys

Am I the only one with Left 4 Dead on Xbox??

The cool thing about PC is when they release the DLC you get a map maker so you can create your own levels. Too bad Xbox won't get that awesomeness!

Dasquian Belargic
Mar 2nd, 2009, 07:21:40 PM
Having played both, I prefer the PC version. The split screen threw me off a lot, by making it difficult to see what was going on, even on a big TV.. not to mention that I am still pretty unco-ordinated when it comes to using the two analogue sticks for moving/aiming ^_^;

Jesimae Lawson
Mar 2nd, 2009, 07:24:51 PM
Yeah, split screen does suck. Whenever I play online without my boyfriend I am shocked at how much one can really not see or miss when playing on split screen. How much different is the game on pc than xbox?

Dasquian Belargic
Mar 2nd, 2009, 07:30:29 PM
Well.. obviously you can play with keyboard/mouse, which is my preferred control system. Gameplay wise, the maps and AI seem about the same. Also the game was made by Valve, who design PC games first and foremost far as I know, so I'm guessing that it was made to be played on the PC. Plus like you said, there is customisable content forthcoming.

And since getting home from my girlfriends about an hour ago I've been cracking on with single-player, getting to know my way around the levels etc. My name on it is superego so add me and if I'm online we can go mush up some zombie brains!

June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles.

"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."

Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.

Awesome news. I just hope they really give players more to do than simply fend off the horde now. Like maybe there are extended actions that need to be carried out. Rather than just having to press a button to start the lift, maybe one player needs to keep at something in particular while the others hold off the zombies. And if the player were to be interrupted it would cost them some time. Like pulling a chain up to get something/open something and getitng interrupted causes you to briefly lose your grip and the chain slips back a bit. Then you'd be like 'Ok you've got the least health so you get on that while we cover.'

Also giving the characters a unique skill each would be interesting. Then the game can be quite adversely affected if a particular person dies depending on the situation. Lets say Francis has a strength advantage, and if the route is blocked he can hold up some rubble/door etc and let the others pass. But if he were dead at the time you'd need to take an alternate route which could prove even more dangerous than if Francis were with you to provide a shortcut. Or with Bill being a war vet, maybe he has an edge with weapons, doing more damage or having access to slightly better weapons, or perhaps there are certain static gun turrets only he can make use of?

Droo and I recently talked about the game and thought mutliple routes would be great. You could take a longer, maybe quieter route or the shorter suicide run depending on preference. Or other routes could lead to different next chapters, which affect the plot/gameplay.

Dasquian Belargic
Jun 2nd, 2009, 11:19:56 AM
I like the idea of multiple routes too. I'm hesitant to say "have a stealth option" but it would be cool if there was some way of evading the horde, to provide some variety in the gameplay... more replay value.

Peter McCoy
Jun 6th, 2009, 04:56:59 AM
Wikipedia says there will be alternate routes - so you'll be rewarded for taking the more difficult path

Nathanial K'cansce
Jun 9th, 2009, 07:41:56 PM
I saw a play through of a map, and it looks like they are going to have something called "crescendo" events where you active something, the horde comes, and you basically have to keep moving (no more camping in spot) to find another trigger to turn an alarm off.

They are also having daytime levels, with WANDERING WITCHES!!! Along with other special infected (Chargers?) and some new non-special infected that are immune to certain things like fire and such.

It looks wonderful.

Peter McCoy
Jun 10th, 2009, 06:39:08 AM
The crescendo itself isn't new, but being on the move during one is.

No Mercy has to be one of my favourite single-player FPS campaigns ever, after Half-Life 2 (and it's expansions) and System Shock 2. The apartment and streets, the subway, the sewers, the hospital; it's very immersive and fits the genre perfectly. Well that statement applies to them all, but for me No Mercy excels at creating that grim feeling of wandering a grim, run-down city in the midst of a zombie outbreak, all the while striving to reach salvation atop the high-rise hospital. And what I particularly like is that in the earlier chapters you can see the hospital in the distance, and can visually see that you are getting closer.

The truth is that IW made a lot of money with COD4 on the consoles but not "enough" on the PC and that is why they decided to make sure that you can only play this game online by using a service that is battling piracy and cheating very succesfull for years.
The other truth is that they will still make a lot more money on the consoles and they are pissing off their fans on the other hand.

And yet already there are mods for MW2 out there which allow gamers to do everything from lean left and right to play on dedicated servers. Also, a crack is available which allows those who illegally downloaded the game to play online using IWNet against itself. On consoles IWNet might be good but for PC gamers it's complete fail when it comes to preventing cheating and piracy.

NEWS:
First off:
I love you Valve. There I said it.
The next DLC (downloadable content or Addon (if you are old school)) for L4D2 and L4D1 was anounced yesterday on GT TV.

It is called "The Sacrifice"

insert drum roll

Not only will it be released for both games L4D1 and L4D2 but it will feature additional to the new campaign "the Sacrifice", the L4D1 campaign "No Mercy" for L4D2 as well. So don't get charged on top of the hospital because it is going to be a long way down!

"the Sacrifice"
is set 4 weeks after the outbreak of the infection. This means 2 weeks after the first game not 2 month like some moron on ventrilo argued. It feature the events that brought the original cast of survivors into that southern village from "the Passing". So Bill is back for his Swan Song.

The nice thing about this campaign is that Bill does not have to die since anyone in the team is allowed to sacrifice themselves.

In other news there is said to be a 150 pages graphic novel coming out just before the sacrifice that will tell the backstory of the original cast and how they eventually end up on the bridge in "the Passing".

I hope that they will keep on doing that stuff since I consider the L4D lore one of the most intresting in our current gaming world today. I hope that they will release more L4D1 campaigns for L4D2 overtime and add some more new campaigns now that they have both sets of survivors in L4D2. Hell I guess I would even pay for a L4D3.

New blog post about The Sacrifice today, including the poster with tagline: "It's Your Funeral" :D

“The Sacrifice” is the prequel to "The Passing," and takes place from the Left 4 Dead Survivors' perspective as they make their way South. You may read the comic to find out the official version of events or this October 5th you may play the game to choose your own ending.

In "The Sacrifice" for Left 4 Dead, gamers receive the complete Sacrifice campaign with maps playable in Campaign, Versus, and Survival. There are 5 new achievements, a new style finale and plenty of places for devastating Hunter pounces.

For Left 4 Dead 2, gamers receive “The Sacrifice” campaign and L4D1’s “No Mercy” both playable with the L4D1 Survivors. This version also offers 5 new achievements. In the L4D2 version of “The Sacrifice” each campaign is playable in Campaign, Versus, Survival, and Scavenge modes, and both "The Sacrifice" and L4D2 version of No Mercy feature the Left 4 Dead 2 Special Infected, items, and weapons. Yes, Zoey with a chainsaw!

"The Sacrifice" will be available as two separate packages on Xbox Live for 560 Microsoft Points each and free to all PC gamers.

We need a new coop game... Like I said before "where is L4D<3?"

Is Borderland any good?

Acacius Blade
Oct 23rd, 2010, 01:03:26 AM
I adore Borderlands. I'll be getting the new DLC very soon (pay day in 5).

It's a mixture of Fallout's wasteland setting, L4D's co-op and DIablo 2's looting. As long as you don't mess about with the 3rd party weapon editor which can really spoil the experience, its awesome.

I say spoil - since what is the point in custom-designing weapons with ridiculous stats in a game that has looting and acquisition of better weapons as a core game mechanic?

My favourite class is the soldier specced into the medic tree heavily. But he's equally awesome as a walking box of ammo, endlessly pummeling the bandits and skaggs with hot metal.

I also like the hunter, able to specialise in sniper rifles and revolvers. The class mods really make things magical - health regen, ammo regen, damage increase, XP increase, shield recharge. And since a lot of them are party-benefits, if everyone equips a mod with a small amount of health regen for example, its cumulative. I've actually had a spec where depending on the firing speed of my weapon, I've been able to regenerate ammo faster than I could expend it.

All-in-all, it's a very fun game - the art style and setting making it extremely enjoyable. And with extra's on the 2nd playthrough such as harder enemies and better loot, it's got replay value too (like Diablo's Nightmare and Hell modes).

Dasquian Belargic
