Random Batman browsing online led me to this Wikipedia page - it's the first I've heard of the game and sounds like a bitta nosh. I'm quite excited about it. I like the mention of blending combat elements with investigatory/detective elements. And the inclusion of batty gadgets and predatory gameplay - sounds like this may be the whole package! :D

That sounds very cool, especially with Mark Hamill playing the Joker again.

Video time:
Batman: Arkham Asylum Teaser Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVhhfycK7Wo)
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Official 'HD' Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eShprJ49Of4)
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Joker Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPnTSvX86Dw)
After just watching those three trailers - oprn-mouthed and in complete awe and excitement over them - I'd say that the Official 'HD' Trailer is the teaser, the Teaser is an extra one, and the Joker one is the main one.
This game looks sooo good! According to that Joker trailer it's coming out this summer. :D
EDIT: Wikipedia says May 1st - same date the US gets Wolverine.

Looks pretty interesting... I wonder if we'll get to run into Doctor Quinzel while we're exploring the asylum :D

That'd be fun. I imagine there'll be quite a few encounters throughout the game.
And after watching/reading up about this game, I think I'll have to buy the graphic novel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkham_Asylum:_A_Serious_House_on_Serious_Earth) when I get paid this weekend.

I had a sneaking suspicion that graphic novel might have had some influence on the game.
It's a great book and I would definitely recommend it. The style is really dark, creepy and gothic looking. Quite abstract too. That doesn't really seem to be showing up in the game, but I guess it would be difficult to translate that very well. The core story though would be easy to do - revolving around the idea that Batman is just as mad as the people he puts in Arkham.

Been waiting for this one for a long time and you guys now've made me want to go read the graphic novel, one of the best Batman GN's ever.
Hopefully this game will be good, been missing a good Batman game. Still somewhat surprised they didn't put out a game for TDK movie.

The Dark Knight (video-game) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_(video_game))
It died a death unfortunately. I remember reading that the developers were going for a free-roaming sandbox-city game in the same vein of Grand Theft Auto, complete with gliding around the city with the batwings (when his cape goes ridgid, not the vehicle from Tim Burtons film).

Movie-based video games are rarely that good anyway, so it's probably best that it never happened.

There are exceptions. The exceptions are fairly unique. Most games based on Disney films are awesome. Two particular ones are Aladdin and The Lion King (Genesis/Mega Drive).
I loved the first two Batman games from Sega (Batman and Batman Returns). 16-bit awesomeness. The first game even had Batmobile and Batwing levels.
And Die Hard Trilogy on Sega Saturn/Playstation was just brilliant. 3 very different games on one disc. The driving one (Die Hard: With a Vengeance) was the weakest but still fun.

The Aladdin/Lion King games were a lot of fun, though I suspect that was because of their simplicity. They were basically platforming games and with good level design, it's hard to go wrong there.
More modern movie games I just feel are kind of.. shallow. The Harry Potter games, Iron Man, X-Men movie game... they're all alright I guess, but they just feel really mediocre, especially when you compare something like the X-Men movie games to X-Men Legends. I suppose the difference is that the movie game is developed probably quicker to cash in on the movie release, and therefore doesn't really have to try and include the depth of storyline that a 'normal' game might - since players are probably going to be casual fans at best.

I agree. The Iron Man game (PS3) is fun for about an hour, then it just turns into a rinse-and-repeat ordeal. But I am enjoying The Matrix: Path of Neo for PS2 quite a lot.
I'd say that games based off movie franchises are fun (though it depends on the franchise) but games that directly follow a movie's plot can get bogged down in the story and end up being pretty thin on the gameplay.

Lord of the Rings have had some good games, but yeah usually most games are put together too fast to be good. The Harry Potter games come to mind, although a few of them are decent.

Every Aliens/Predator game I've played has been great. From Alien 3 on the Genesis and Super Nintendo (SNES being the superior version) to Alien Trilogy on Saturn/PSX (Doom clone but still a good game IMHO) and AvP on the Atari Jaguar. That was improved on by the PC AvP games (1&2). Even the Playstation 2's AvP: Extinction and Predator: Concrete Jungle are awesome games that are a nice departure from the FPS trend.
And now we've got a new series of Aliens and Predator games coming from Sega - Gearbox heading the new Aliens: Colonial Marines game (apparently there's a new AvP game coming out before it).
So thats at least one franchise that's had a great run of games spawn from it.

The demo is pretty good. Of course, all it covers is the "tutorial" portion of the game, but still. Definitely contains all the items a good Batman game should have, not the least of which is the stealth aspect.

I'm in work right now, plodding along on about 3.5 hours sleep. But it was well worth it. I love the combat, it's so fluid and fun. I love it when batman counters a patients attack, then flips over them before the takedown. It's just awesome and I can't wait to get my hands on the full game at the end of the month.

Amazing game! Simply amazing!
Not without a few flaws (which I will get to in a moment) for overall a brilliant game indeed.
Paul Dini wrote a great story and the way it's weaved throughout the game and how it flows between cinematics and gameplay is unbelievable. It's a great plot and the best thing is that it makes sense not only game-wise but Batman-wise. The characters are true to form and the rogue gallery of Batman's foes was well-crafted and executed. Even the way the game ends, setting up the sequel (if they make one, of course) is brilliant.
Graphic-wise is amazing, the scenery, the environments...few games match the beautiful graphics of this game.
Game-play wise is good towards awesome, the combat is fluid, controls make sense (not just a button masher) but some of the camera angles are simply a pain in the ass. A. ROYAL. PAIN. IN. THE. ASS.
Those camera angles are my main gripe with the game. That and the fact that such awesome graphics can at times be overlooked and not enjoyed by the need to use DETECTIVE MODE. If you do play this game, make sure to turn it on and off often so that you don't miss some of the game's scenery.
Another downside is the length of the game. it's short. At least the story is, there are some challenges and treasures that can lengthen the total gameplaying time but in the end, it's short.
And that's that. Overall it's a great game and you should definitely pick it up, if you're a Batman fan you'll love it and you're not, you'll love it too.

I bought it today (released just this morning for us Europeans) and am absolutely loving it. I particularly enjoy the intro in which you escort the guards who are escorting The Joker - the dialogue is a lot of fun during this sequence.
I simply adore the combat. It's fluid and easy to learn. While you can get away with button-mashing in my opinion, you do benefit from putting thought into your punches. Good-timing results in higher damage and ultimately more XP gains (used to purchase upgrades such as additional combat moves and tech).
I've just this second glided down ffrom a rooftop outside and glide-kicked one guy, then effortlessly countered and pummeled the remaining 5 guys without taking a hit. The way Batman moves on the screen is great - his cape flowing this way and that. And you can flow from punching one thug to bglocking another, counter-attacking, stunning, then attacking the first one again all in one flurry which is just a joy to watch on your screen.
I'm actually enjoying the blue-tinted detective mode - I feel more immersed in the game world - I am Batman and I know I can kick ass and track down clues and sneak up on people or glide in and take them down. I am simply awesome and everyone on the island should be shit-scared (nay - terrified) of me, even the guards who are on my side.
I'm going to be coming back to this game again and again, I can tell right now.
I really can't remember what the competition might be but I'd say this has an incredibly good chance of being GOTY.

This game just keeps getting better and better.
I've almost attained all the upgrades that are available from XP gain, and I've got the line launcher (see the bit in Tim Burton's first film where he escapes from the museum) and ultra batclaw. And the part where you have to glide along the cliffs from the batcave is just brilliant (if a bit short).

Apparently the European Collectors Edition is awful compared to the US version. I guess I saved myself £20 getting the normal version.
People on the GAMe site say the batarang is plastic and feels/looks cheap, plus you don't get the cool leather sleeve for the game case like in the US version. Bummer.

I finished this last week and while my overall experience was fantastic, I thought the final boss battle was a bit cheap and gimmicky. The actual mechanics of the fight were fine, but it's the boss himself who left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I didn't like the idea of fighting the Joker who'd been injected with Titan. It just cheapened the experience a little bit. But only that fight mind you - the rest of the game in its entirety was friggin' brilliant, and I'm looking forward to playing through it again.

Completed Arkham Asylum this morning, which I got for a bargain through the Eidos pack last christmas. Fantastic game, IMO worthy all the praise and then some. I now have to complete all the riddles and challenges. Some of them are rather hard, especially the one under the bridge, that drove me nuts to find.
I think this is not only the best adaption of the Batman franchise in any format (and yes, I have Nolan's The Dark Knight in mind), but it was probably one of the best, if not THE best video game of 2009. Bravo!

What a disappointing final boss fight. After your arrival at the Jokers party, and the camera shifting into first person, I was expecting some long, twisted climax that would move from area to area, calling on all of your skills and gadgets to take the Joker down. Instead, the Joker becomes just another meat-head. He didn't even use any of the above average goons during the periods where he threw mobs at you.
Don't get me wrong, I loved this game - but everything after you defeat Poison Ivy felt like a real let down.
