Simple. What's your job? And, anyone who has questions for another person, go ahead and ask.

I'll kick it off.

June 1st I start work at Kaos Studios in NYC, an internal studio for THQ. I'll be an associate programmer probably writing code for tools.

Your choice of the word "tools" gives me the wrong idea. :) However, that is awesome dude. Congrats!

What does it mean to write code for tools by the way? Are we talking programs that essentially assist in game development?

I am a Customer Service Representative for the Virginia Department of Taxation. I answer general questions on state income tax and handle a small number of specialty tasks for the Department, including but not limited to assisting with the training of new hires.

Exactly. I'm going to be designing and developing new tools to do pretty much whatever we need done, working on our content pipeline, possibly writing MEL scripts for Maya, who knows what else.

I'm slick at C++, too, and a fast learner when it comes to codebases; so, there's a good possibility of engine work.

EA's offer was actually to work on engine code... would've been great; but, I like NYC more than LA.

I went to school in Finance and I enjoy dealing in matters of dollars and cents. I'm particularly interested in fraud investigation as I have numerous friends who were in fraud and they love the work.

Since I can't figure on making honest work out of any of my hobbies, I figure having a profession that I moderately enjoy is a good compromise.

I was the only person in the office who knew how to use a computer. So instead of the boring Accountant I was studying for, I was moved to the server room and the mainframe.

21 years later, I get 150+ per hour to yell at CEO's for being dickwacks for their IT choices. I also get to yell at coders and strike fear into other geeks and nerds. When I got systems that cost a company 100,00 per hour if they are down, you better believe if it's a vendor's or a programmers fault, I am going to come after your ass and you will not like it. Do I like it? I'm not sure anymore. 21 years is a long time in any industry and it kinda bores me now.

Before that I spent years trying to find the right thing to do with my life, and usually got bored and/or annoyed far too easily. Teaching at Waldorfschools kinda caters to ALL my small and big hobbies and interests, so when someone mentioned there was a one-year training course, I jumped at the chance. Apparently it's the right one cos I seem to be good at it.

Okay, question for everyone - why did you chose your job?

Working at Electronic Arts over the summer, I realized I thrive on the human element of software development. I like talking to people, having them use my software, updating it for their needs, etc.

I also love software architecture, software design, and software development processes and practices.

So, getting to work on the tools side of game development pretty much fits all of that perfectly. I'll get to architect several projects and manage them independent of the rest of the team. Basically, it gives me a level of freedom that most straight up programmers don't get to experience (they're working with someone else's architecture and on a tight schedule with a mountain of requirements).

I could go on and on about all of this; so, I'll stop there, hah.

T Operations / IT Helpdesk at the world's third largest Beef Packaging company's US Corporate Headquarters. They do Pork and Lamb packaging too. It would have been the world's largest if the economy hadn't gone down so hard and the last acquisition went through.

I basically babysit/troubleshoot many different platforms of servers, mini-mainframes, routers, switches, and circuits and contact the appropriate people when there are problems I can't fix myself.

I also take internal end user help desk calls, but don't get too many of those since the majority of the company's employees work with knives not computers coupled with the fact that I work third shift.

As for why: Because its the job I've got, and I am fairly good at it. Do I like it? Sometimes. Would I choose it if I actually had a choice of any job? Hell no!

Come to think about it, I do pretty much the same thing for this website.

Chased that position since November, made a lot of progress (top candidate), then BAM!!! layoffs to clear other departments with a hiring freeze. I was looking forward to starting work again. I am a veterinary technician specializing in emergency medicine and surgery. Currently I'm involved in a marine study examining the relationship between changing migratory patterns of humpback whales and global temperature fluctuations. Also, I do therapeutic work with autisitic children and animals.

Why do I do what I do? I was born in and spent a lot of time in British Columbia, out in the boonies, and we always had a flock of critters that we rehabbed. It's always been a lot easier and more comfortable for me to relate to animals, and I wanted to be a vet but things got busy and I ended up becoming a massage therapist instead. Finally got tired of it, switched and haven't looked back since. :)

I bought a book on immigrating to the US, and so far employment is the only thing that looks like it will work as I don't have immediate family in the US (They're all still canadian!) who could sponsor me. There are lots of ways to get a green card or Visa, but none of them really would apply to me. They have a green card lottery, but Canada isn't one of the countries that can apply (neither is the UK unfortunately).

AFAIK, you need to have some sort of specialized skill (they have special visas for this, I think) or if you are not taking a job from a US citizen.

Dasquian Belargic

Yes, but accounting is a fairly simple field to be honest.

Why do I do what I do? I took the job initially because I was desperate for money and the pay was okay. I continue to do it because the pay is okay, but I have also become very good at what I do and I get a charge out of doing things well. I don't know whether I'll choose to stick with it or not, but for the short term it's a good, secure job.

I would love to teach Religious Education at a Catholic Church or school. Youth Ministry is a close second. But finding work in that field has been hard. I think I'll just cut grass all day.

I am in commercial banking. A branch sales person or lender has a new or existing business customer and brings our team in to cross sell a certain product set. So, I get to meet alot of people and learn how their business works. I also get to help those business owners with their day-to-day accounting and banking. I also work with branches and lenders to look for opportunities in their portfolio. I search local business sales lists and originate new business as well. Then, I train our branches and lenders on general business strategy and products. So, I present and speak at meetings all around the mid and western US (we don't have a presence in the East).

Recently I've been invited to work with our Business Strategey Unit for my efforts.

I fell into this profession after leaving property management (which I hated). I knew someone in this bank and that's how I got here. Since it's a large bank there's been a ton of opportunity to "move-up". I've done everything from new accounts to lending to selling investment products before I got here. Sales is actually fun for me, but this change to Business Strategy for the bank is more my cup of tea and I really enjoy it. I get to travel (I've been to Los Angeles the most) sometimes, can work from anywhere (including home), and love the people I work with. Not only is it a specialized skill set, in order to be sponsored it needs be proved that whoever is being sponsored is not taking the job from an American citizen or a resident. It also needs be proved that the sponsoring company has conducted a reasonable effort to fill the position and has been unable to do so (e.g. having an ad in the paper with no applications for six weeks or if there have been applications, why are the applicants not qualified/rejected).

And then you have to pass the physical.

Since I moved to go to University, I left my jobs behind, which is sad because although they were kind of routine and the pay was low, I really loved working. Right now I'm a fresher at the University of Derby, and I'm studying for a degree in Law with Criminology. I haven't picked up a job in Derby yet, 'cause I wasn't sure if I could handle that and the workload.

At home, I worked as a waitress/kitchen slave at the pub in my village - awesome because the people I worked with were wonderful, and the customers were mostly fun and didn't mind if I screwed up occasionally. I was also allowed to wear stripy socks and tie a matching ribbon in my hair! :D

I also worked for a little bit in a coffee shop in the town I went to high school in - they needed somebody to work while their regular waitresses went on holiday. I managed to get a place because of my experience at the pub, and because I drank lots of tea and ate way too much cake there. Again, the people I worked with were amazing, and I got free drinks, too!

I babysat for my parents' friends; I got along with the children really well because I play Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, plus I let them eat the snacks that their mums and dads left for me, and occasionally let them stay up a little bit later. Luckily, it was okay for me to fall asleep on the couch.

Finally, I picked up a summer job being a group leader in a theatre company. It was terrific because I love drama and it's really rewarding when the children are confident enough to step up on the stage and make their parents super-proud. Plus, I got chocolates from two of the girls as a thank-you! Ehee!

Why do I do it? Initially, because I hadn't had a job before and wanted to see what it would be like. The pay was a nice bonus, too. After that, it was partially because of the pay and partially because I loved working so much. Gee, that sounds SO corny.

Because I have to save up for my travelling costs next year, I'm heading home for the summer and begging my employers for my jobs back ...

Okay, question for everyone - why did you chose your job?

My answer to this question is kind of lame, I know. I study this because I am good at it. I am not much into tunning cars and I am not a guy that codes in his freetime but I am good in mathematics and mechanics and I have a good understanding of what Problems I can solve with Hard- and Software.
For me this is my job and not a hobby and I think this is a good thing because I can go home and do something else that does not remind me of studies/work. This does not mean that I do not have fun doing my studies I just prefer other things.

...wouldn't a Masters in Accounting be a prerequisite for that?

No. And accounting is really not a "simple" field. But, I know one accounting professor at my school has his masters in Finance and a Bachelors in Economics. I mean, granted you will probably need related field experience but America is pretty desperate for accounting PhDs. Average starting salary for them is currently in the 115-145 range.

Har, well simple "to me" is a better way to put it. Take that for what you will.

Are you talking about bookkeeping or accounting? Because any idiot can keep the books. We refer to those as "Basement dwellers."

No, not merely bookkeeping.

Although given where I work, I guess if I didn't have a certain aptitude for the various aspects of accounting, I'd probably have been fired (or not hired). My Bachelor's was in Economics, so I have a decent background in various things financial and business related.

I grouse about my life, mask my contempt about many of my co-workers, and pretend to be a writer, though I am in a helluva drought(so long now I've almost given up getting inspiration again).

Oh, what I do to actually make money? Mostly I am involved in testing the marketing campaigns of upcoming film releases.

I don't really care for it, but I can't seem to get the drive right now to do anything else. I'd love to get a gig in a Production Company doing something somewhat creative, but no luck with any resumes i send out.

I'm really stuck in a malaise.

I did not know that you get paid for going to the movies.
OK just kidding! How does this work? Do you do polls or analize statistics.

Hmmmmm, how to explain this.

Anyways, the department I'm in basically tries to figure out what movie trailers/commercials work the best for upcoming films. We have folks in the field across America, like in malls I guess, that show people different versions of commercials/trailers. What's a recent film I could use as an example? Let's say Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Like say 4-6 months before a film comes out...about the time you start seeing the trailers at the theater, we start testing trailers. They'll show half a dozen different versions to random people. Then we get that data and try to categorize it and then code it...then ANALYZE what it means. Then before you know it one of those trailers starts appearing in theaters. Obviously it's the one that tested the best for whatever demographic the studio was after(we look closely at the ages of the respondents). We do the same thing with commercials, closer to the release date. Test a bajillion versions, and then the 3-5 that test the best are the ones you see on TV during whatever show starting acouple weeks Shopahlic came out.

(As an aside, that was one of THE most tested films since I've worked here....the studio must not have had a clue how to advertise the damn thing. We literally tested probably over 100 different comercials)

We also do a few other things(like analyze responses to Test Screenings), but those are the main things my department does

I couldn't get anything better, and they were hiring?

Trust me when I say it's not nearly as sexy as it sounds. I don't get paid squat. But after you pick it up....it's easy, I like my hours, I can walk to work(which in Los Angeles is remarkable), and I seem to be lazier than hell. So I'm still there....after like 3 years.

Good God, I need to get out of there. :lol

It's such an easy job, and even though I hate it, I can't see myself working somewhere else were I may *god forbid* have to DO WORK :ohno

Okay, question for everyone - why did you chose your job?

I chose my job (more accurately, my degree field) because I'm a giant science geek, I'm pretty good at chemistry, very good at physics, and have some crazy math skillz, but I didn't want to be stuck in a laboratory for 40 years doing research. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy quantum mechanics and grand unified theory just as much as the next uber-nerd, but I wanted a career involving something a little more practical for the present. So, engineering was a good fit.

I like my current job well enough. It has it's stresses and annoyances, just like any other job, but I'm fortunate to have a good group of co-workers and a boss who is a decent guy and not pants-on-head stupid.

So the NDA on a lot of DR2 (dead rising 2) stuff is being lifted on May 29th. Least that's what I was told but I've started seeing stuff released today. I think its just a few select press releases but the majority of them will start tomorrow.

So now you guys(those who are interested anyway) will finally start getting decent trailers, game play summaries, better screenshots. etc etc! Hurray!

OH and BTW when will you be allowed to pass on some information about a possible multiplayer? I heard rumors on a coop mode but I guess this would be to good to be true :)

Little too early to say and to be honest I haven't been told. (Just an animator) the game designers tend to only tell people what needs to be known in order to get stuff done. But ill do some asking and try to find out for ya

Being an animator for this game must be one of the most rewarding jobs in your department. Hell DR is all about animation and pulling of cool stuff.
My friends and I used to gather around a TV set and passed the controller around in a kind of sick competition where you had to make the most spectacular fatalities in 5 minutes :)

I'm a dedicated, rather silly, stay-at-home dad to a lovely, young miss of two. She is the light of my life and fills my days. (Though the routine gets to me, sometimes) Luckily, there's the 'net and lots and lots of DVD's to watch to keep me sane. ;)

About the only thing I can answer questions on right now is what kind of unemployment benefits a UK citizen receives!

Amusingly, my answer has not changed, even though I am now employed. My job is to provide advice to unemployed members of the public on how to go about pursuing various benefit claims, as well as conducting fortnightly interviews with them to see what they have been doing to find a job (and thus qualify for their benefits)

I just started this week :)

:lol I know, I am far from being the public's favorite person. Guess that's why our first training sessions were about how to deal with aggressive customers... It's weird though, I am working in the branch where I was signing on for months to get my benefits, so I am familiar with most of my colleagues already from when I was the 'customer' ^_^;

Today is my last day in my current position. Right now I am a Senior Foreclosure Anaylst level III for JPMorgan Chase bank. I'm the guy who has to protect the poor bank from getting ripped off by people not paying back the money we lent them and they promised to pay. Been doing it for just about three years, and it's not so bad, really.

But, on Monday I start in the Claims division, so that'll be a whole new ball of wax for me. Thankfully, as I already know all the systems better than most people here, I should be able to transition fairly easily and excel. But, right now I gotta wait for Monday to find out for sure.

Is it my favorite job? No, that was being an automotive technician (mechanic) at a Eurpoean car specialty shop. Actually, I am (well, was) an ASE Certified Volvo specialist. (ASE certs expire over time) But I know Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, VW, Saab, Land Rover, Rolls Royce and Jaguar pretty well, too. That was the most fun I've ever had at a job, and the most I've ever spent on equipment to do my job. About eight grand in tools and toolbox, I believe. Do not ask to borrow a mechanic's tools; you do not know how much they actually cost.
