This is possibly the most retarded thing ever but hey. So at four-thirty this morning I was awoken by this throbbing in my hand - it turns out that the hangnail that James gooshed pus out of yesterday was mad at me. It's sore but also sort of numb, like someone shot me up with novocaine and I don't know if I should go get it checked or not.
I've been soaking it in epsom salts since six-thirty so that's... three and a half hours! The swelling has gone down and I can bend my finger now which I couldn't before.
Here it is in purple vein-thingy glory:

And for a reference point, my non-hangnailed finger:

I don't know if I should go get it looked at just in case or what. Google has scared me. But not enough to go to the doctor, who scares me more. :uhoh

It looks like some kind of bacterial infection. It might not look much now, but depending on the culture, if left untreated, it could get much worse. So yeah, get an appointment with your doctor ASAP. You may need antibiotics to get rid of that.

That's what I told her.
Also, everyone who replies to this thread needs to remind Liz that NAIL CANCER DOES NOT EXIST.

I suggest a doctor visit. Seriously. Infections are of the ick, and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Get some penicillin! From the doctor. That should clear up that bad case of nail cancer you have there.
j/k OF COURSE there is no nail cancer, but infections can get nasty really fast, and if that was your son's finger I doubt we'd be having this conversation. You'd already have a prescription in hand. So go. Shoo! And tell us what the doc said. :D

I've got an appointment for 4 o'clock with the local vet. I'm gonna poke it with a pin right now though and see what happens.

I cleaned it - also gave myself a shot (.5 cc of lidocaine) because it was really hurting and then put some bactroban cream on it.

animal doctors are good for animals.
People doctors are good for people.
Self medicating is usually bad :p Unless you're a people doctor too.

Quoted for truth. If you're worried enough that you want our opinions, you really need to go get a professional opinion.
The last time someone posted here asking for medical advice, I showed the thread to my dad, who is a doctor, and he said the same thing without hesitation.
Take care of yourself, hope it gets better soon!

I tried popping it myself and it didn't work - so I did go to the vet. Dr. Steve said it was a paronychial infection and he soaked it in hot water and then took a scalpel and cut the nail bed - no pus but a lot of blood and boy did it feel good to have the pressure relieved! He's running a test for MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staph... something) and in the meantime I have topical antibiotic cream three times a day and orally twice a day for a week.
He also called me a moron. :shakefist

:lol Exactly! I wanted someone to feed my irrational desire for it to be nothing. That way I'd have an excuse not to go. ^_^;
