Its official. SW-Fans.Net is ten years old this year.
Thank you to everyone who's contributed over the years, especially those who've served as site admins and moderators in the past and present. Darth Turbogeek, Agent Charley (I miss him), Eve, Nupraptor, and all the others. THANK YOU! I know its a thankless job. ;)
We, the current staff, have some ideas cooking up for celebrating this year, and of course there is the meet up planned for Dragon*Con in September. BE THERE!
But please, post and let us know how long you've been posting here at 'Fans (a lot of you left for a time but have returned - so count from the very beginning!) and the first name you used here. Post where you came from and who brought you to 'Fans, if you want.
And feel free to give any shout outs you want to posters and contributors of past and present.
I came from the Crazy-Butt Message Board in July of 2000. Banestone and Itala Marzullo, Fox609, Xinxz and Lordess Amber were all posters there, and they convinced me to join this little group called The Sith Empire. Banestone is my younger brother, and I was wary, but I loved writing and wanted to get more practice at it, so I gave it a shot.
TSE linked me up with Live Wire, and the rest, as they say, is crazy fun Cali Girls history. My first RPing name was Lady DeVille (no apostrophes on Ezboard!) and I kinda miss the days when we all had our own ezboard and there were a billion forums to check and they were all full of fun and interesting conversations.... not to mention IC treachery and plots to over throw each other!
I'm glad, however, that we've evolved past most of our petty disputes and board rending arguments. HOORAY US! :hug

If I recall correctly, I was at the Greater Jedi Order first in... October 2001, as Falcon Gyndar. Came there from TalkCity, where I was Miriya Cailis, Lord Shade, and one or two others. Natia and Rivin (Old high school friends) got me into TalkCity, and they dragged me along to ezboard, too. I followed the move here, and I've been around on and off since.
I certainly miss the times past, and some of those that no longer haunt these boards, but I wouldn't give up the present either. Here's to many more good years. ;)

Original Username: Jervstar (on original original original board), following move to ezboard Darth Jasper then (primarily) Atreyu since July 1999.
Arrival: May 1999 (must have been late May as TPM was already out).
Found the original 'Star Wars vs. Titanic' website via another fansite in May 1999. Was posting on the very night that a bunch of trolls attacked the forum and JasonF setup an ezboard forum (so he could ban them) and followed everyone there. I was absent during the CoruscantCity.Net breakaway (on holidays) but remained primarily at (now re-titled) SWFans, where I eventually became a moderator (and later, administrator).
I began participating in some basic roleplaying and helped with the Jedi Council/Order that was re-established (the original group having moved to CC.Net). Assisted with the eventual merger of the 2 Jedi groups to form the Greater Jedi Order in November 1999 and served on the inaugural Jedi Council where I remained for a few months before leaving the roleplaying, but stayed on as an admin at SWFans. After a couple of on-off gigs as admin finally retired permanently in May 2002 and have posted fairly sporadically ever since.

If I remember roughly 10/22/03? I was part of the Star wars galaxy Fan Fiction community before the game launched and the boards went private.
I never actually played the game but started reading the fan fiction stories I saw people writing and eventually got involved myself.
When the boards went private for those actually playing I left for greener pastures. I found Swfans.
I'll have to give a shout out to my recruiters namely Jarek T'chort. Who I became good pals with and Telan who was always a good friend in supporting his Imps.

Uh. 2000, I think?
I was roleplaying at Gundam: Battalion, it took a nose dive and someone had posted a link to the ezBoards. I promptly joined The Sith Empire with my RL buddies Vapor Kazuna and Mark Fenix.
There I studied under Sith Summoner, participated in fleet battles, did R&D, all that jazz until I found the Galactic Military Alliance (GMA) and Darth Viscera.

I've been here since 6/19/00 when I braved coming out of lurking mode. I was a TalkCity person as well, and I really don't remember how I got linked to Fans. Maybe it was Dara?
Anyway, I was going by Dalethria in those days and the little thread I posted lured out a SithKat, who eventually linked me to TSE and became my Master, and I her first Apprentice :D
I know Big Green is still around but :hug thanks for RPing with mes! Let's not forget Havok either!

Been here since late May of 1999. The board was located at jawafortress, and was mostly BO/film review related. When most of the members left in July, Atreyu, myself, and a handful of others kind of set up camp here and became the top dogs. :lol
Love the mention of Jedi3167. :D

Okay seriously though... Not really sure when I joined up, it was either late '99 or early '00. Started under Summoner63, which promptly was eaten by Ezboard, and changed to Sith Summoner, which after another Ezboard snack, was replaced by Sumor Rayial.
Came to Fans by way of The Sith Empire. Was brought there by Glace Ice, from Dewtropolis.

I joined back in August of 2000. Can't quite remember how exactly I found my way here, I think it may have had something to do with the Star Wars Chicks forums and someone there recommending these forums to me for RP? lol. I can't think back that far. But I do remember joining TSE and essentially flipping a coin as to whose apprentice I'd up as - Dara or Dale's. ha ha....and then Ogre did my first sig - I think he made me a custom saber for it too (whoo for pictures and text in tables!). Back then I was known as Rain13 and then Raine Sarin. (if anyone remembers that character I'll be frellin shocked)
So yeah! Been away for uhh...a long, long time. Dragged this character over here from elsewhere along with the Twins. (You have Jen to thank for that) :) Really looking forward to getting both characters going and hopefully sticking around for a good while thing time around. Yep.

And THIS was my signature file???? Check out mine:
"A Jedi must remain focused. Mastery of the Force requires that all unneccessary activities be purged from daily life." - Jedi Master Atreyu (Chief Librarian for the Jedi Order, member of the Jedi Council, master to Jedi Padawan Kai Solus, commander of the 'Ravenwing', wielder of the ancient lightsaber 'Varscona').
I can still remember the horror of all those HTML table sigs, especially since half of them were not correctly coded (including mine). :lol
And 'Kai Solus' as it turned out was really Vengence doing a spot of infiltrating, as was the norm back in those days. :)
Love the mention of Jedi3167. :D Well he did contribute to the forum in his own unique, special way. Even if we did all think he was nuts. :)
Dutchy had a good insight about movies, but he stopped coming around as well. Yeah I think it was all those War on Terror debates that drove him a bit crazy there and saw him leaving in the end.

I was recruited for CC.net 8 years ago by a woman called Jade who is from Germany like me...and 8 years later I am now here because QuiGonJ told me if I was looking for a forum with more traffic this is the place to go. I had a pretty warm welcome here and I really regret that I have not come here earlier.
I see a lot of familliar faces around here although I joined only a few months ago: Yogs, Jedi Master Carr, Mu, DT, QGJ, Rutabaga, Itala
Yeah and I guess we all miss some faces like the one of D23 :(
I still remember playing SWG all night with some of the people here. For me it was literaly all night since most of our dungeon crawls ended around 5:30 in the morning...stupid timezones...
Now what really intrests me is: Why did the "CC.net people" leave SW-fans in the first place? I am kind of curious now since I always thought that CC.net and SW-Fans just shared users with a commen history(like the "SW vs Titanic" board Jade told me about). I always saw CC.net and SW Fans as some kind of sister-boards but not as the platform of people who exiled from one to the other.
Maybe someone wants to tell a little bit about the board's history.

Now what really interests me is: Why did the "CC.net people" leave SW-fans in the first place? I am kind of curious now since I always thought that CC.net and SW-Fans just shared users with a common history(like the "SW vs Titanic" board Jade told me about). I always saw CC.net and SW Fans as some kind of sister-boards but not as the platform of people who exiled from one to the other.
Maybe someone wants to tell a little bit about the board's history. I was away at the time, however from what I was told (and can vaguely recollect):
* Trolls were running rampant and the mods couldn't get rid of them (mods didn't have the ability to ban back then, only admins)
* Posters kept complaining to JasonF (site founder) but he wasn't responding.
* 2 mods, C0untryB0y and The Lounge Lizard (Charley), decided to sort it out themselves - they began editing troll posts with their own humourous entries.
* Trolls complained to Jason.
* Jason demoted (and banned???) CB and LL.
* Board-wide outcry.
* After failing to work it out a fair chunk of posters left for a new forum which FoxDVD had set up (later to be known as CoruscantCity.Net).
There was perhaps a little bit of acrimony between the 2 sites originally but it disappeared within a few months - the fact the the 2 Jedi groups on both boards managed to get together and merge by November 1999 I think would indicate that everyone had gotten over it by then.
The funny thing (to me anyway :)) is that after the whole schmozzle Jason pretty much removed himself completely from being involved with the board, letting some of the few remaming posters take care of it. By the end of 1999 myself, CMJ, jjwr etc. were all admins and pretty much running things to the same ideals as CC.Net was. :)
There is a copy of the e-mail Rmiao sent to everyone announcing the formation of CC.Net floating around the web - I might see if i can find it.
EDIT: well that didn't take long. Here it is:
Sent July 12th 1999 by Rmiao
Attention: Members of the Forum
"All good things must come to and end, but every end has a new
beginning." Such is the way of life and so it is with these words,
that
we begin anew.
Four days ago, members of this forum joined together to discuss the
future of our message board. With the recent turmoil that had struck
and continues to strike these forums, it was decided that action had to
be taken.
We should first explain the numerous problems that have caused us to
take action. These forums, as most do, had few problems at its
inception. Over the course of two months, circumstances have arisen
which are intolerable. These boards have become a tyranny, a tyranny
ruled by one man - JasonF much the same way the Empire was ruled by
Palpatine.
"Just drop it, whatever I say goes basically." - JasonF
"If you can't deal with this, tell me. You truly over estimate your
position here. These are SWFans.Net forums. True the visitors that go
here make up the forums content and structure. But unlike Naboo, this
is
not a democracy." - JasonF
It is our sincere belief that a message board should be a democracy -
we
believe posters and users of the board have the final say. Decisions
should not be made by someone who is never on the board, nor who
understands the general feelings of its posters. It is the people who
have invested so much of their time and energy into the board, and so
it
is the people who deserve to have their opinions carried through.
A number of complaints are therefore brought forward:
1. Sole dictatorship of the forums by JasonF
2. JasonF's position on the forums, which reflect his commitment to our
community -
"The forums are a very small aspect to SWFans.Net and i really could
care less about them. If people aren't enjoying themselves then maybe
the forums should just be taken down." - JasonF
3. Removal of CountryBoy and The Lounge Lizard as moderators by JasonF
-
despite the fact that 95%+ of the posters on the forum voiced their
disapproval along with good reasoning, JasonF was unmoved. Rest
assured,
in a democracy, this would not have happened.
4. Trolling by members including JoshuaHarris and Rhodes - JasonF took
no action, and did not investigate why CB and LL took action against
trolls. Rather, he reprimanded them and did nothing to the trolls.
5. Slow reactions in responding to problem users such as solo, darth,
etc.
And so, action was taken.
The new, "Star Wars Forum" is at:
http://206.86.100.18:8080/bstarwarsforum
Nearly 30 of the most active posters on these boards have already been
informed of and agreed to move to this new forum. A list of those
people can be found below. By the time you read this, emails of this
message will have been sent to every forum member for which we could
find an email address for.
The new forum has multiple admins, who most importantly, are regular
posters. The current admins include Palpatine, Jonathan, The Lounge
Lizard, Rmiao, Foxdvd, and CountryBoy. This forum will be a democracy
in which the people of the forum - the posters, decide how the forum is
run. The forum will be exactly the same as the old forums, but with a
different government, a democracy, not a dictatorship.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to go to the new forum. "Out with
the
old, in with the new." ALL posters are welcome, regardless of their
opinions on Star Wars or other movies such as Titanic. The only
difference will be that in the new forum, "trolls" will not be allowed.
In other words, Titanic lovers, come on in! =)
Finally, a number of posters are also web designers and programmers.
We
intend to create a quality, main web page so new users from the
internet
will continue to come to our boards. In the meantime, the forum's
location will be advertised in numerous ways, so we are assured that
there will be a steady stream of new posters.
An In depth announcement on this issue can be found at:

Lynch I spoke to the other day, so he's certainly online, but doesn't seem to do any more RPing unless I'm mistaken. Works as a lumberjack up in the north somewhere... forgotten where.
And 'Kai Solus' as it turned out was really Vengence doing a spot of infiltrating, as was the norm back in those days. :)
Vengence... heh.... I keep trying to lure him back here but everytime I do he doesn't make it past the "Wonder if anyone remembers me? Hi folks, I used to be known as Sith Renegade or Vengence around here"-thread.... :lol
---------
I came here in September 2000, along with Tondry, Viscera and Hyfe. We'd been writing SW FanFic on a board I ran, and Thrawn spammed it one day with some Imp propaganda, so we all went and took a look. The link brought us back to the old SW vs. Titanic board, and I don't think it took all that long until we were all up to our elbows in RPs.
I started out by playing Director Isard, as a member of Thrawn's "gang" of Imps, but then started ImpIntel and with Piett and Viscera we had the Imperial Nexus for a while. Then I lost myself in a multitude of other characters; as Delirion joined RSO (I think) and got kicked out again, then we had the Black Hand... also played a whole bunch of Imps, and occasionally an Ewok and his Gamorrean friend.
Things went a bit wrong somewhere along the ways, and I left along with TSE. Didn't stay around there for long either, tried to do my own thing, and ended up suffering from a massive curse of the writing block for 3 or 4 years.
Came back last year in January after Dale and Jeseth talked me into taking a look at the forum, and never left since :D

Thanks Miss De'Ville - I honestly forgot all about the wiki. But a quick re-through seems to indicate my memory was pretty good. :)
Atreyu, the Jonathan mentioned as a mod in that letter is that the same infamous Jonathan? Yes. His demotion and banning on CC.Net in late 1999 created what was probably CC.Net's own 'breakaway' group - the Swamps (the Jedi Council thread I linked to earlier is located on their old board).
As far as members go, I can only really recall sirdizzy, Jonathan and Itala Marzullo being banned (Itala multiple times, including by myself, though he has long since been reinstated). however banning discussions probably should be left to PM. :)

Well I didn't want to say "so-and-so was permabanned" so I was vague. Of course some people have just disappeared, I didn't mean to insinuate that everyone who's not here anymore was banned. That's just silly. :)

But please, post and let us know how long you've been posting here at 'Fans (a lot of you left for a time but have returned - so count from the very beginning!) and the first name you used here. Post where you came from and who brought you to 'Fans, if you want.

I came from TalkCity to the boards around 2000, too, I think, and it was at the invite from Thrawn to join his group that he was putting together. I saw his EzBoard set up and decided I'd make my own - The Acropolis. I hung out there with Eve and Daquiri and somehow Rama Sha dropped by to say hello and after him Ogre and Havok. And thus began the addiction :)
So many names to 'shout' out to from the early days. (Kudos on your memory Atreyu!)
Big hellos to all the crew that came and went, and often came back again to the Acropolis and, in its latter form, ShadowFaene Fortress: I belive we even had a gungan among us as at one point (who also was Avalon Bisel/Sage)
Hello's out to Lance Casey, Ket VanDerveld, Remy LeBeu & Dyne Darkforce, all the Vamps. Anyone remember Stryder?? He wasnt RP but he was a cool fella.

StryderWulf was a cool guy. I don't know how he found his way to The Loners Place, but it was neat having him around. I forget what his band was called... EDIT: Oh it was called Laughing Through Our Tears! From the looks of their old board, I guess a few of them used to be part of the Allspark forum (where I think Rama and some others came from)

From the Cinematic / Titanic discussion thread... :D
Author Comment
CINEMATIC
(6/8/99 4:13:14 pm) SW is nothing compared to TITANIC - These are the facts
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Titanic was based on a real life incident. We
as the audience know the events depicted really happened to those poor people. Jack and Rose though fictional were the living embodiment of the hopes, fears, and dreams that everyone on the Titanic had. StarWars is a
total fantasy, so the empathy factor just isn't
there. Unless ofcourse you're a TURBOGEEK with minimal human contact.
2. Despite asinine SWTURBOGEEK assertions that Titanic's repeat audience was
all teenage girls, the truth is that Titanic's
repeat audience was divided fairly evenly across all demographic groups, including many well-educated adult males (such as myself).
TPM's pool of repeat viewers is much narrower, as it is almost entirely made up of 8-14 year old boys and hard-core SW "get-a-lifers".
3. The Performances in TPM were horrible. The little boy crying at the grocery store line could have given a more convincing performance than Jake Loyd. Titanic had absolutely beautiful performances from its actors. Their hopes made you care, their dreams inspired you, and their eventual fate made you feel a sense of foreboding. There were none of these elements in TPM unless ofcourse you're a TURBOGEEK.
4. In TPM, the special effects really call
attention to themselves, which tends to take us out of the moment. In Titanic, the special
effects served the story without getting in the
way of the story.
5. Unlike Titanic, TPM has Jar Jar Binks. What a horrible creature. Unless ofcourse you force yourself to like it and blindly accept it like so many of you TURBOGEEKS do.
Face it people TITANIC is the greatest movie in the world. TPM is the greatest pile of overhyped *bleep*! (Yog - censored)
TITANIC WINS
.. and I put up a copy of a copy of the entire thread here (http://www.mneh.org/archive/Cinematic.html)... :p

Ok, so.. as Lady Razielle (http://lady-razielle.u.yuku.com/), I started at Fans somewhere in September 99' after I was dragged from TalkCity to the boards by General Scorpion, who Raz was hitched to at the time! :lol
Names from the old folks home: Scorp, Hera, Eve, Rage, Thrawn, LV (of course), Rama, Itala :o, Iceheart, and a few others I'm sure. Actually, I started as part of Itala's original TSC, and Scorp and I had this side thing the SSO.. Wow. You know, I was on webtv then and had oodles of notebooks of potential silly ideas and url's and whatnot written down. I think I still have them acutally. :uhoh.
Well, after a hiatus or two, I wound up as the apprentice and chew toy of Saurron LeStat and a member of the Coven. I miss these guys more than words can express, and I do hear from a couple of them every so often. But The Coven was the begining of Salem and Raz! Back in 2003 when I 'stole him from the Shrine and sunk my claws into him'. Muwhahaha. :wings
If you look closely, you may still see the marks. ;)

"On July 12 1999, as revealed in the TGC Role Playing Hall of Fame Timeline, the Star Wars vs. Titanic forums at SwFans.Net endured a split. The result of that split was the formation of a new set of forums, forums that would eventually become Coruscantcity.net."

And I ruled you all for near on a year!
*Shakes an old haggard fist at the forums*
Lord Gue here, just passing through on one of my nostalgia trips. Ten years? Wow, what a long strange trip it has been. I can still remember having trouble logging into CC.net or when that huge ass spam thread that was the longest on our Ezboard became the longest RP thread when the Sith/Empire hid an attack on the Jedi Temple in it... Oh, good times indeed.
Lest we not forget the forgoten hero's of yore... Grand Admiral Thrawn, who plucked some of your earliest Imperials from the depths of Talkcity chat rooms and brought them here to bolster his forces on the message boards. Boy did that blow up in his face when each of us broke off and formed our own mini empires. How about Kat, who ruined Julian's (Itala) bid for power by doing nothing more than rejecting him in RL over the tubes.
I miss the days when this 'roleplay' thing was new and exciting, When a five-hundred word post on SWFans was longwinded and an anything goes mentality existed outside of a competitive spirit. I'm not saying it was good or even that I'd want to read it, but it was fun. SwFans evolved and look at you now, so much bolder and shinier than us relics of the past...
May you have another Glorious Ten more... but no more than that, becuase that would be excessive....
And Yogg, I still have that door I tied you to when I shot you.

I think I was rumored to be Lady Mara Jade when I (re-)started, lol. And I didn't even know who that was at the time.
~Edit~
Oops, forgot to add my stuff in. :) I started in the Talk City chats as Jedi-Obi_Rhon, then Darth-Rhon, and then Lady-Vader-Rhon of the Legion of LVS. I was also a moderator for Talk City as DeathStarTCC and then CCConcerto. The Legion looked at joining SWFans back in 1999 (I registered Lady Vader Rhon on ezboard on December 2, 1999) but it just wasn't quite the same as the chats so the Legion stayed at Talk City. But I kind of liked the whole message board/writing thing. I made a brand new character, Adriana Storm, and tried to join RSO. That didn't work out as planned so I created Dara Shadowtide on July 18, 2000 and joined TSE. :) I have a lot of great memories from over the years and met many wonderful people.

Well, we couldn't help it. Us old farts haven't seen a SW movie since 83, so a new one was enough to make us squee and create RP boards back then. ;)
Congrats on 10 years as well! :cheers :cheers :cheers

How about a massive party in 2017 to celebrate when the boards are old enough to drink, drive, and appear in pornography? ;)

Wouldn't it be awesome if we discovered one of our posters worked in the industry, and had accidentally left the site active on a laptop in the background of a porn shoot or something? :lol

So, it's the tenth anniversary. And, while this may be blasphemy for even bringing up, I think it would be a nice gesture on SWFans behalf to unban all of those previously banned and invite them back for a second chance. It be pretty neat to reconnect with people long forgotten over silly transgressions. So in a nutshell: unban people, invite them back.

I completely agree with this. :) Lift the bans!

All the 'old' bans were lifted a few years ago, actually.

This is true. Whether or not people choose to come back is up to them :) We don't have a big email mailing list to lure then back in with sadly, but if you know someone who was previously banned and has interest in coming back... send em over ;)

Almost all of the bans are from stuff like spamming.

There are 17 accounts banned currently and they are all spam-bots/advertisers - no former roleplayers :)
