Voted for XBox 360.

The PS3 is a great piece of hardware, and if you were to want a Blu-Ray player for movies anyway, it's a good buy. The game selection and price has always deterred me from buying one purely as a gaming console though. The newer versions of the unit also no longer have backwards compatibility with old PS2 titles.

I have a Wii, and I enjoy it on a very casual basis, playing games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart and Guitar Hero. However, as fun as the console can be, it also has some annoyances, the main one being that the control scheme can be really wonky for most games not designed by Nintendo themselves.

My brother has an X-Box 360, so I've played games on it fairly frequently. I think in terms of a good balanced console (good hardware, big game selection, good overall performance, decent price), it's the way to go. If you get one, immediately get both Gears of War games, then build up your game library from there.

The PS3 is really out of my price range, and I'm not hugely interested in the blu-ray thing, which is why I am looking only at Nintendo vs Xbox.

360. The Wii is a party game entertainment device, and the 360 has a huge selection of very good games, along with being the primary development target for nearly all the multiplatform titles.

I've been trying to decide myself. The Wii also has the advantage of making a decent library of NES, SNES, and N64 games available for purchase, though you'll need either a Classic or a GameCube controller to comfortably play most of them. The selection of decent games on the Wii is really paltry, even more so than the GameCube had by this time in its lifespan. Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy are the only games that really excite me.

However, I haven't seen much from the lineup of Xbox 360 games that really excites me, either, as first-person shooters don't really interest me that much.

Wii is fun, but if you can only get one get the 360.

I agree. Especially in 2008, there we're a lot of FPS' released, however there are a lot of RPGs being developed too. And always the usual sports games if that's your thing.

I haven't played a ton of things on the wii but it seems like a limited machine.

I'd go with the 360. Of the two it has way more upside. Unless you just absolutely have to have Wii Bowling. :p

If I could only have one console right now, it would be the 360.

There are two 360's in my apartment that both get frequent use (one in my room, one in our central room) from all of my roommates and our girlfriends.

My brother has a 360 and a PS3. Unless a game is exclusive to PS3, he plays it on his 360.

The Live experience is wonderful, well designed, and super easy to pick up and go with.

The 360 controller is awesome.

Microsoft has done an amazing job of attracting studios to the 360. As someone who has had to write code for both the 360 and PS3, I can say that the 360 is designed for game developers. It's so unfathomably easy to deploy to.

As for the Wii: I can't stand it. So, consider my opinion biased.

To me, it's the type of console non-gamers buy, get a game or two for, then forget about after a month or so. It's not designed or marketed for gamers.

Additionally, Nintendo is not supporting outside studios well enough. Sure, Nintendo games are great; but, all non-Nintendo studios are seeing very, very poor sales.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

zhiangx, get a TOSLINK optical connector Like this one (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901&p_id=1419&seq=1&format=2). Plug into the 360 and plug the other end into the Panasonic receiver. Although that might vary based on how the 360 is connected. How do you have the video set up?

I have a PS3 simply because I wanted the power of Blu-Ray! I've never bought a game for it, instead I just nick em off people like Peter(who think they might actually get them back one day - haha! I mock the fools!), and consequently I've been playing GTA4 and MGS4.

As for the others, I'm a pure Nintendo fanboy but while I appreciate the wit and ingenuity behind the Wii, I feel it's not as strong a gaming console as previous Nintendo platforms and while family fun is great and all, they really ought to accomodate the more mature hardcore gaming fanbase too. My only experience with a 360 is watching Peter playing that Fable game and it looked incredible. My experience is limited so I'll not vote and simply offer my humble opinions(which are awesome and wise!).

Gears of War, for a FPS, was insanely addictive, unlike the Medal of Honour games and Call of Duty to me. A freakin' chainsaw on a gun?! Awesome! The Berserker segment had my palms sweating, even during co-op play. The story was pretty good, but a bit cliché. The monsters and stuff you had to fight made up for some of the plot's lack of originality in my opinion.

Smash Bros is great fun for groups of friends. Period. No matter what, you'll have a good time playing that game with friends. The rewards system, while useful to get people to actually try and play for longer periods, is simply retarded in the amount one has to put in for some of the rewards though, so single player mode was always something I didn't touch.

I watched my friend play Fable II on a 360, and it was amusing to watch for a bit. You can really almost do anything in that game, to anyone. Don't like your fiancé(e)? Kill 'em, and you're home free. You can even get a statue made of yourself in a little minigame.

So, it depends really what you're looking for. the 360 had the breadth and depth of games to choose from. Wii is just plain fun to play what games they have, for the most part. Wii Sports is probably one of the best things to get for it.

In my opinion, the 360 is the better buy overall due to the amount of games that are worth playing for it. The Wii is really fun, but you need friends around to have a really good time.
