Should be a great day 6 playoff spots up for grabs today. The most exciting game should be the late game. We shall see what teams will get in today. The other question will the lions go 0-16?

Yeah it does, my chiefs look awful right now as well. If they don't fire Edwards, I think the fans will shoot the owner.

Ben Roethlisberger took a bad hit near the end of the first half and was carried off on a stretcher with his head immobilized. :(

Really hope he's okay.

It looks bad for him. Not sure why he was still playing when the game meant nothing. I can't believe the Giants still have Manning in there, if he plays the second half Coughlin is a moron. The Colts and Titans are playing their game like it is an exhibition game.

I don't really question the decision to play Ben in the first half. The Steelers offense has been in search of their rhythm ever since week three, and Tomlin probably wanted to make sure the first-team offense got some reps going into their first-round bye. I'm almost positive Ben was going to come out at halftime, and that hit easily could've come the first play of the playoffs.

Still, it's a hard blow to take. Hopefully he'll be healthy by round two. He gave a thumbs-up on his way out of the stadium, and preliminary word is a concussion (though that much was pretty obvious). Hopefully it's a minor one, and hopefully there aren't any more complications on top of it.

Well I would have played him a quarter at the most, but I just believe if you have everything wrapped up just treat that last game as an exhibition game.

They didn't, though; they were up 7-0 and were driving for another score before the end of the half. I don't think you blame the coaches except for the putrid line play that has plagued Ben all season. The backups are phasing in now in the second half, and I think that was the intention all along.

In other news, I guess I grossly overestimated the Titans' interest in winning their final game... 23-0 in the battle between Jim Sorgi and Vince Young. :lol

The Titans have Chris Simms in there, they haven't played Chris Johnson all game and I don't think most of their defense players even played. I guess they could care less if they win.

Minnesota wins the NFC north and Carolina barely wins the NFC South. Tampa Bay and Chicago are both out. 6th seed will be Philly or Dallas. New England won so the Jets are eliminated so if Miami wins they win the AFC East, if they lose the Pats win it. Ravens need to win to clinch the 6th seed.

Kale
Dec 28th, 2008, 03:19:06 PM
Well, to be more precise, Carolina barely beat the Saints - the Buccaneers, unbelievably, just lost to the Raiders, so the Panthers would be the South champs win, loss, or tie.

More remarkable is that Drew Brees, with 386 yards on the day, came within 15 yards of Dan Marino's single-season passing record (5,084). Amazingly, even after the Panthers' go-ahead field goal, he had a chance to pick up the record - the Panthers called their pre-kick timeout just a bit too early, and there was one second left after the score. Then, on the kickoff, the Panthers tried to squib it and ended up kicking out of bounds, so no time ran off the clock. Drew Brees had Marques Colston open for about twenty yards, but he threw the wrong direction. I don't know know that he was even looking for the endzone, because the closest man to the pass was a Panther - it was just an inexplicably bad pass.

New England won so the Jets are eliminated so if Miami wins they win the AFC East, if they lose the Pats win it.

Actually, the Jets aren't eliminated. If they win, New England will be the AFC East champs. If, then, the Ravens lose, the Jets will be the #6 seed. For the Ravens, it is very simple: win and they take the #6 seed, lose and they're out, regardless of what happens in the Meadowlands.

And, thanks to the Buccaneers and Bears falling on their faces, the Cowboys-Eagles game is essentially a playoff game - the winner gets the #6 seed in the NFC.

Obviously didn't have any playoff implications, but because the Bengals won and the Browns lost, the Browns slipped to 4th place in the AFC North, which will impact their schedule next year. A really sad state for the "trendy pick to win the AFC North," as they were called so often in the preseason.

Actually, the Falcons would have won the NFC south if the Panthers had lost. They had the tie breaker edge. The Browns sure fell apart, I wonder who will take over that team.

the Buccaneers, unbelievably, just lost to the Raiders,

Things were going great in that game, until right at the time Carnel Williams re-injured his knee, then the Bucs just seemed totally deflated after that.

BTW, I don't remember this bring a rule, but a defensive pass interference is 15 yards from the point of the interference penalty rather than from the line of scrimmage? First time I've noticed it at least.

No, defensive pass interference is a spot foul in the NFL - automatic first down at the spot of the foul. I'm afraid I don't know what play you're referring to.

We've added the playoff and Super Bowl picks in the past...as I recall, the first time I played, it was me and jjwr down to the wire, and it was only the Super Bowl that decided it. And I won that year, by just that one pick :). Since then, I've basically stunk up the place :lol.

And I loved that game last night...revenge truly is sweet. Very, very sweet. Right now, picking the Indy-SD game is going to be a huge challenge, I could see it going either way right now.

The regular season has been done for less than 24 hours and there are already three coaches out:

Browns have fired Romeo Crenell (not a surprise)
Lions have fired Rod Marinelli (not a surprise either)
Jets have fired Eric Mangini (this is a bit surprising, especially this quickly).

Expect more firings within the next day or so.

Pretty brutal so far, Mangini was a bit of a suprise as he did what he could with who he was given.

I expect Herm to be gone and wouldn't be suprised to see Phillips join him soon. Jones will be stupid to keep him after the Cowboys blew up down the stretch.

I'm beginning to wonder what kind of coach is necessary to keep all those egos satisfied, Jerry Jones included. I think it's hard to blame Wade Phillips for all their woes when the organization, from the top down, values superstars over team.

Incidentally, I'd like to point out that the TO meltdown in Philly really hit critical mass during the Eagles' loss to the Steelers in 2004, when Owens was caught on the sideline screaming at Donovan McNabb. Now in 2008, during the Cowboys' loss to the Steelers, Owens was screaming at Cowboys coaches and shortly thereafter launched his latest self-pity campaign. I guess the Steelers just have that effect on him. :)

ESPN is reporting that the Denver Broncos have fired head coach Mike Shanahan.

This is a big shock, despite Denver's late season collapse. He wasn't even on the radar in terms of coaches really on the hot seat. I guess Pat Bowlan simply had enough of his team falling short of expectations in the post John Elway era.

Neither would I, but I'm sure Shanahan won't have difficulty finding another job. Still is a shame.

Bill Cowher has requested that Cleveland not include him on their list of candidates, and I can't believe anyone outside Cleveland is surprised. He has, however, been receptive to the Jets, and with Shanahan gone, it's also been suggested that the Broncos would be a good fit for him.

The Browns are pursuing Patriots VP Scott Pioli and are also planning to speak to Eric Mangini.

I was very suprised at the Shanana firing but they really havne't done much since Elway left and collapsed this year so I guess you can only take it so far.

Word I heard on Cowher is he won't coach until his daughter graduates high school and that will be next year but may work in another capacity for a year.

yeah he turned down the Jets I am sure the Broncos and Chiefs will both try to talk to him, but I bet he turns them both down. Not sure who the Broncos will try to get now. The Jets will probably try to contact Shanhan, the Chiefs might as well once they boot Herm out the door.
