And I was thinking Anne Rice vampires were the worst or the people that believe they are vampires or vampyres or whatever crap was the worst, No, we have truly reached the nadir of bloody awful - whatever happened to Bram Strokes' Dracula kind of Vampires? The ones that are outright evil, dont have emotions or families or whatever other garbage, are actually scary and good to read about?

Oh that's right, that would be because Anne Rice has the writing ability of an gnat and the other stupidity is words vomited up to become contemptible garbage.

I think all writers should be forced to use typewriters and actually have to think before putting a word to paper instead of smashing their head against the keyboard.

In fact, lets have a game of...

The literature nerd in me is coming out...

Anne Rice was good, to begin with. Whilst the... romantic elements of her books might not appeal to everyone, I wouldn't say her books were poorly written to begin with. Over the years, she has gone a little bit mad and become slightly obsessed with her own creations, there is no doubt about that - but Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Pandora and a few of her other books were good, great even. They portrayed vampires as something to fear, without a doubt, but also reminded us that vampires were once human.

The struggle between monstrosity and humanity is what I always thought was most compelling about vampire fiction, personally. If the vampires are going to be the focal characters, they have to have more to them than an animalistic need to feed. If they are just playing the part of Hammer Horror style villain, fair enough make them a one dimensional fiend, but otherwise they need a bit more to 'em.

Stephenie Meyer, in contrast to Anne Rice, is just not a very good writer. Her characters are not compelling and though she attempts to portray her vampire 'family' as flawed and struggling with their 'curse', there really is no feeling that they are cursed. There seems to be almost no negative consequences to being a Meyer-style vampire. They become, essentially, super heroes and just happen to need to drink blood now and again, which they can just get from animals anyway so they don't even need to inflict their monstrosity on humans. Borrrrring.

....aaaand I rambled.

No she wasnt. She was always bad. And just went worse. I need brain bleach just recalling the pages I could cope with before flinging the books away.

The struggle between monstrosity and humanity is what I always thought was most compelling about vampire fiction, personally

And that's where Rice et all miss the point and why the original Dracula gets it right. There is no struggle. Vampires are monsters, straight out. They ARE the things we are supposed to fear. They are things of the night - they don't have motives, they don't have feelings, they are supposed to scare the everliving....... out of us humans. Because that's what they do.

A Vampire is like a cat. A cat when it is out to kill has no emotion, no pity and no form of "well is this the right thing to do...?". It is completely cold blooded about it's work. Which is why cats do disturb humans -they are cold, heartless and they don't care about anything when they kill. Unlike other animals man has domesticated, cats chose to live with us as it suited them.

To a bird, a cat is a complete monster. That is what a vampire, when it works best, is like to us.

And just like how JK Rowling's books were never about Wizards and magic, Dracula was also not about Vlad or vampires. And that's why they work so well. And why Anne Rice et all fail.

Hell, if you want to pick Dracula apart to the nitty gritty, it wasn't even about vampires. It's about the struggle between the past and the present, superstition vs. science and modern technology.

Also I'm kind of confused as to how you can cite Bram Stoker's Dracula as a source to prove vampires have no emotions. If vampires were concerned purely with killing, why would he bite Mina Harker repeatedly in an attempt to get revenge against Van Helsing et al? Surely he would just kill her right away? :huh

I mean hell, there are earlier examples of vampire fiction than Bram Stoker's novel, and in those vampires are rarely painted as just monsters - the key to the mythology is that they are damned. They are something that once was, in some way, human or pure and that has somehow become monstrous, against its own will. Evil for evils sake is boring to read about :\

So...does anyone else seem to have a problem with the new trendy vampires that wear corsets and leather and feel they are fallen angels who must avenge some silly purpose then go celebrate at a coven? Or....is it just me?

I loved the book Queen of the Damned, but the movie was a bit too...pop-esque? NOT ALL VAMPIRES ARE GOTHIC PEOPLE! ARRRRRG!!!!

What happened to the good ol' days...like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in "Interview with the Vampire"?

Ettagar Veir
Jan 6th, 2009, 05:16:51 PM
I enjoyed Anne Rice quite a bit, though Memnoch the Devil really soured the experience for me. Interview with the Vampire was excellent, and Queen of the Damned, while not as good, was certainly readable. My main concern with Rice was that there was just so much description to slog through. She's like a modern Charles Dickens where he goes on and on about describing how dead Marley was; and she doesn't have the paid by the word excuse to run with, either (she didn't write the descriptions the same way Dickens did, but really, we all understand that Lestat is the "Brat Prince", move on, shift it!).

One of my favourite vampire movies was Dracula 2000, for the same reason that Dasq cited, Dracula was damned, and there's no better way to reinforce that than having him be Judas Iscariot!. That was a twist I will remember for a very long time.

Dasquian Belargic
Jan 6th, 2009, 05:22:23 PM
I haven't seen Dracula 2000 but I do like the idea of tying vampires into some kind of Biblical mythology, hence my appreciation for White Wolf... the vampires originating from Caine (brother of Abel :lol)

You know...I haven't read the *ahem* "new vampire books" and I don't think I ever will. Nor do I think I'll ever see the movie. It just doesn't appeal to me and this is someone who really liked Interview a whole hell of a lot (book = <3) and got all into the White Wolf vampire lore there for a while (no LARPing for me, I just really enjoying reading all the stuff)

I half wonder if I just have kinda grew out of the vampire fascination though. But what does it say about me when that was replaced but an undying (ha ha) love for zombies? http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk47/Nuime/733bc50f03ec0d6f.gif

I haven't much looked up White Wolf; I checked out World of Darkness, but didn't much find myself creatively inspired by it. Looks cool, sounds cool, but tying the new mythology, while it may work for others, didn't work much for me.

Any places with good summaries of that stuff? Especially werewolves; I am a fan of good werewolf stuff (EDIT: Looking on a whitewolf wiki at the mo'). The protagonists aren't nearly as girly as half the vampire protagonists that I've seen. Excepting Blade.

Edit #2: I just payed attention to what I was reading. That stuff is World of Darkness, isn't it? Wow.

Hell, if you want to pick Dracula apart to the nitty gritty, it wasn't even about vampires. It's about the struggle between the past and the present, superstition vs. science and modern technology.

Check my last thought out again. I know that Dracula isnt about Vampires themselves - like Harry Potter is bugger all about wizards and magic and in fact mocks such things - and that's why it works!

:huh

The original vampires were not about humans damned. The ideas of vampires as damned humans came later and isnt the core of the mythos. The original is about hell spawn. And you can see from the horror of the real life Vlad the Impaler

However, vampirism is better known as rabies and THAT is what the damned idea came from. With no rational explaination of the effects of rabies (Oversexed, daylight allergic, excessive sensitity to herbs like garlic, self image issues leadign to fear of mirrors and religious symbols as the brain rots from the disease) then it seemed logical to relate blood sucking hellspawn to the disease.

But as be, little of good vampire literatre is about evil for evil's sake. It's much more than that and not really about the vampire itself.

So if you are a goth and a pretend vampire.... your a rabies sufferer and your brain is turning to a sponge! :evil

Rabies |I yeah that is one source, thanks to people in ye olden days being ignorant about biology. To be honest though there is no 'original idea' about vampires. Stories exist about them (or some variant of the idea) in pretty much every culture and they're always different. What I'm talking about, though, is primarily the vampire in fiction, not in folkloric beliefs. I'm thinking about classic vampire literature - including Bram Stoker, and older stuff like Carmilla. I think what you have beef with is not vampire fiction but paranormal romance fiction, which is what I would classify Twilight as.

Btw, Vlad the Impaler... I prefer Elizabeth Bathory :D
