In the latest news reports, at least 90 people are dead and the count is rising in a string of terroist attacks in a popular resort destination in India. Five star luxury hotels and train stations are the primary targets, with the terroists specifically targeting Britons and Americans vacationing there.

A couple of links to get people updated on what's happening. While India has suffered a lot of terroist attacks lately, this seems to be the first one targeting westerners, and with Pakistan next door, one has to wonder if there is Al-Qaeda involvement (or anti-western terroist groups involvement, as there is more than just one main group now).

Unlikely as there is a far bigger Hindu extremeist groups that have come under suspicion for similar attacks this year. As much as Muslim extremeism is a problem, in India Hindu extremeism is considerably more probematic and lethal. There have been regular massacres of muslims, Christians and other non Hindus for many years of varying degrees of scale.

So while some opportunistic Islamic groups will claim responsibilty, in the end they will most likely find it's the work of Hindu extremeists once again and it will be nothing to do with Al-Qaeda

It looks like a war zone there. It is impossible to guess at this point but I guess it is one of the kashmir groups. They have done stuff like this before.

One of our local cardiologists, who is originally from India, is there right now on vacation. We're not sure which precise area of India he's visiting, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that he's okay.

I also figure we'll find out it isn't Al Qaeda...it's more likely something "home-grown." Unfortunately. It's horrible, the few pictures I've seen so far are terribly sad.

Hindu nationalists and right-wing groups are a problem, but most of that sort of thing has been around Bengal, on the other side of the subcontinent. Mumbai's violence problems have largely been related to Islamic terrorism.

This sounds like the sort of thing that would be in the Pakistani Taliban's sphere of interest. The nationalists in Pakistan have been extremely concerned about the improving ties between India and the west, to the point that some fringes even in the Pakistani army believe that America and NATO's real purpose in Afghanistan and the tribal semi-autonomous regions of Pakistani Waziristan is to weaken Pakistan's autonomy and defensive power, to enable India to essentially undo the 1947 Partition, and create a nascent India, fully propped up by the west, to counterbalance China. It's a moonbat theory, but there are quite a few right wingers in Pakistan who believe this beyond question.

I would still say it is probably one of those free Kashmir groups. They have done things like this before and the training bombings a few years back comes to mind.

An article with a quick update. 101 are now confimed dead, with a Japanese tourist dying in a local hospital. Terroists are still in control of the Taj Mahal and one other hotel, with sporadic gunshots heard from within the buildings. At the time of writing the article, Indian commandoes were thought to beginning an assault on the Taj Mahal to rescue the people trapped there.

The story about the rabbi and his wife being killed but their 2-year-old son being rescued is really sad. :(
