I don't have the NFL Network so I couldn't watch last night's game, but I saw highlights on ESPN. And wow, that looked like a really exciting game. The kind of game I'd probably develop an ulcer over by the end! :lol

Great game, very ugly first half for the Pats but they came on strong at the end. Cassell finally showed he can bring a team back from down double digits at the end. He did everything he could but the D couldn't hold on that 3rd and 15.

He threw for 400yds and got me 42 points in the Fantasy Football league!

So, it's happened...

Eagles at Bengals: 13-13 OT.

I guess we just add a an "and one" to everybody's records...

Jedi Master Carr
Nov 16th, 2008, 03:50:52 PM
LOL yeah, when was the last tie anyway?

Yog

What a display of misery those 15 minutes of overtime...

LOL yeah, when was the last tie anyway?
The last time we had a tie was in 2002 apparently.

Jedi Master Carr

Yeah Pitt-Atlanta, I vaguely remember that it was on a Thursday night I think.

Dragon
Nov 16th, 2008, 04:06:55 PM
I vividly remember it.

The last play of overtime was a long bomb from Tommy Maddox to Plaxico Burress. He caught it on the one-yard-line with no time left and was stonewalled immediately. Each kicker had missed a try in overtime.

That was the year of the Tommy Gun offense and the charity-minded secondary. Tommy Maddox's performance in that game still stands as the franchise single-game passing record after going 28-41 for 473 yards and 4 TDs, and Burress got the franchise single-game receiving record with 9 catches for 253 yards and 2 TDs.

EDIT: I can't believe the refs in this Steelers game. Not only did a completely bogus pass interference call set up the Chargers' lone TD (and only score until the 4th quarter), they have now flagged the Steelers eleven times for over a hundred yards. Some of the calls were legitimate, many weren't, including a ridiculous holding call on Ward that nearly hamstrung this late 4th quarter drive. They have overlooked several close holding plays committed by the Chargers line, and they waved off an obvious defensive holding foul that would have extended a Steelers drive. The Steelers may be playing sloppy, but they're also getting some very lopsided attention from the officials.

EDIT: Holding call that erased Willie Parker's go-ahead TD run was pretty tacky, too, but at least the Steelers still took the lead with a field goal... and then on the Chargers' ensuing hook-n-lateravaganza, Troy Polamalu broke up a lateral, then scooped it up and sprinted into the endzone!

But, unbelievably, the refs review the play and rule that there was an illegal forward pass by the Chargers (there was none), which ends the play on the spot and erases the touchdown. I think they just wanted to see the game end with a score of 11-10, the first such game in NFL history. But they screwed this game up on so many levels. One of the worst-officiated games I've seen in a long time.

The Titans played a great second half. Ugly game in Pittsburgh.

Yog
Nov 16th, 2008, 06:20:25 PM
From the look of things, this will be the first time in NFL history a game ends 11-10.

Ah, never mind. Another bizarro comedy ending for the Chargers...

In 12,838 games, no 11-10 score. Looks like it will have to wait some more.

Jedi Master Carr
Nov 16th, 2008, 06:26:26 PM
Lol no that TD changed that. The Chargers have tons of problem.

Well they took the TD off confusing there.

Yog
Nov 16th, 2008, 06:30:49 PM
lol, the referees in this game.

For those who did not watch the play / ruling, it went like this:

1-10 SD21 (:05) (Shotgun) P.Rivers pass short middle to L.Tomlinson to SD 24 for 3 yards. Lateral to C.Chambers to SD 26 for 2 yards (T.Polamalu). FUMBLES (T.Polamalu), RECOVERED by PIT-T.Polamalu at SD 12. T.Polamalu for 12 yards, TOUCHDOWN. The Replay Assistant challenged the backward pass ruling, and the play was REVERSED. (Shotgun) P.Rivers pass short middle to L.Tomlinson to SD 24 for 3 yards. Lateral to C.Chambers to SD 26 for 2 yards (T.Polamalu). FUMBLES (T.Polamalu), RECOVERED by PIT-T.Polamalu at SD 12. T.Polamalu for 12 yards, TOUCHDOWN. Penalty on SD, Illegal Forward Pass, declined.

Edit - Tomlinson interview on ESPN:

Tomlinson - I'll take questions now, only if they're NOT about the officiating, I don't want to talk about the officiating.

Reporter - Mike have you ever seen...

Tomlin (cuts in) - No, I've never seen a game with 13 to 1 in penalties, but I don't want to talk about the officiating.

Cowboys game is starting!

I walked away in disgust after the Steelers kicked the field goal to go up 11-10. From the sound of it, it's good I did. Sounds like those last 10 seconds were just ridiculous.

At least the Niners won. Although I'm trying not to get too excited about that. I don't know how much of that game was the Niners coming to life finally, and how much was a function of them playing a bad team like the Rams. I think it remains to be seen.

And at least my numbers for the weekend are looking pretty darn good, with only 2 games left. :)

Was that Ed Hochuli? Almost wondering if he was trying to make it up to the Chargers for botching their game against the Broncos. Now, on one hand, if you throw thirteen flags in one game, chances are that some of them are going to be bad calls.

But thirteen flags in one game against one team - that's just ridiculous unless that team is the Raiders. And the fact that the Chargers' only touchdown came from a pass interference call where the receiver initiated contact AND the ball was ten yards over his head...

I don't even know why they bothered looking for an illegal forward pass, but, after watching the replay on ESPN, I didn't even see one. If your standard is conclusive evidence, how can you overturn that play, even if it had made a difference? That was just petty.

EDIT: They announced at halftime on NBC that the NFL has officially ruled that the refs messed up the final play and that Polamalu's touchdown should have counted. Of course, they can't go back and overturn it retroactively. But that's still a terrible job by the officials, and at that point, it starts to look really suspicious, especially after the epidemic of ridiculous fines and roughing the passer calls that have been thrown the Steelers' way.

EDIT: It wasn't Ed Hochuli, it was Scott Green. A Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter interviewed him after the game and found out Green realized he had made the wrong call after the game was over: http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/blogngold/default.aspx

9-6 for me. Not nearly as well as I'd hoped... missed one upset and misfired on another two, though all the games I lost were within one score.

Of course, I do sort of like the idea of counting the Bengals and Eagles as a tie for everyone. In which case I'm 9-5-1, and LD is 12-2-1...

Liam Jinn
Nov 16th, 2008, 11:05:44 PM
Nah, just count the tie as a loss.

Sasseeri Reeouurra
Nov 16th, 2008, 11:17:19 PM
no no count it as a win!

Rutabaga
Nov 16th, 2008, 11:45:07 PM
I've only gotten 2 wrong so far too. :eee

In the long run, it doesn't really matter which decision is made on how to deal with the tie, because it will ultimately affect everyone the same way, won't it? I can't see how it would give anyone any kind of advantage, either fair or unfair, no matter how it's counted.

Lilaena De'Ville

and how often are there ties in Football? It's a matter of semantics and it doesn't change anything in the end :p

Jedi Master Carr

We could count as a tie, but if you rather make it easier just count it as a win.

Dragon
Nov 17th, 2008, 12:36:07 PM
I think the most logical thing would be to count it as a loss... after all, everyone has the option to pick a tie on any given game. It's just not a good idea because it's incredibly unlikely.

Bengals radio announcer says: "Well, I guess 1-8-1 looks better than 1-9, but not a whole hell of a lot."

Yog
Nov 17th, 2008, 02:37:13 PM
Bengals radio announcer says: "Well, I guess 1-8-1 looks better than 1-9, but not a whole hell of a lot."
Ties are underrated in terms of division / league rankings. A tie automatically ranks the team above ALL other teams with the same amount of wins. That's huge. Especially in a sport where ties are so rare. On the other hand, if you win, your ranking compared to those with the same amount of wins depends on tiebreakers, which can be more random. Of course, a win is better than a tie, but a loss is far FAR worse than a tie.

Nathanial K'cansce
Nov 17th, 2008, 04:36:00 PM
And it also helps if the team that ties actually *can* win to get into said tie breakers. ...Poor Bungles. :(

I have a very bad feeling about this...

Rutabaga: 13-3
jjwr: 12-4
Lilaena De'Ville: 12-4
Yog: 12-4
Aurelias Kazaar: 11-5
Liam Jinn: 11-5
Jedi Master Carr: 10-6
Miranda Tarkin: 10-6
Ryan Pode: 10-6
Dragon: 9-7
Nathanial K'cansce: 9-7
Park Kraken: 8-8
Figrin D'an: 7-9 (did not pick)

And we've got a new leader:

1. Yog 107-53 (95)

2. Dragon 105-55 (96)
2. jjwr: 105-55 (93)
2. Rutabaga 105-55 (92)

5. Lilaena De'Ville 101-59 (89)
5. Miranda Tarkin 101-59 (91)

7. Liam Jinn 100-60 (89)
7. Aurelias Kazaar 100-60 (89)

9. Nathanial K'cansce: 99-61 (90)

10. Jedi Master Carr 98-62 (88)

11. Ryan Pode 97-63 (87)

12. Figrin D'an 96-64 (89)

13. Park Kraken 85-77 (77)

As always, let me know if I screwed up.
