This comes out tomorrow. The first two games are classic RPG games any word how good this one is going to be?

I'm really looking forward to it. The setting is possibly one of my favourite fantasy/sci-fi settings - a post-apocalyptic wilderness full of untold relics of the past, guarded by all manner of miscreants and mutants.
My Playstation 3 is ready and waiting - I think it'll be great!

I was a huge fan of Fallout. In my view, one of the best, if not the best RPG ever in gaming history, so I am obviously very excited about this.
The early word and reviews for this is very good.

Word now is, this may be a serious competitor for Game of Year on the PC, and possibly one of the best RPG's of all time (yeah, Fable II also gets excellent reviews right now, but this is probably even better). Some people have been concerned it would be too similar to Oblivion, but from the sound of things, this is a unique game with the best elements of the Fallout series. The consensus is, it has a great story, characters and immersion, captivating setting, but where it really stands out is the classic RPG style with real choices and concequences, and highly appealing tactical action gameplay. Lots of stuff you can explore and do, and high replay value becase the path and style of the game depends on what perks and skills you train. From what I heard, there are like 8 different endings. Not only a worthy successor of Fallout 1&2, but the best one in several different ways.
Of course, I reserve judgement for when I am able to try it out myself, but what I heard so far is extremely promising.
Some early reviews:
- IGN 9.6 (http://pc.ign.com/articles/924/924346p1.html) (one of the highest ever)

- Voodoo Extreme - 37 hours in (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/previews/42567/Fallout-3-Thirty-Seven-Hours-In):
Thirty-seven hours in, I've become a vampire, been hailed a saviour, a bigot, and a lover extraordinaire. I've battled Super Mutants, Radscorpions, and all manner of nasties. I've left the safety and security of the Vault, I've exterminated those who opposed me. And yet, I've only scratched the surface.
Fallout 3 is a gigantic, brilliant game. Every inch of its hand-modelled world brims with detail; something to see, something to do, something to use, something to kill. It has guns, it has Oblivion features, but it isn't Oblivion With Guns. It is its own game. A game expertly crafted to provide an abundance of entertainment per Dollar, at a time when six hours of fun is an acceptable return from fifty-five bucks.
As it stands, I have no reservations recommending Fallout 3 to any and all. If the remaining seventy-odd hours did go completely Pete Tong, the experience to date would still be worth the price of admission. Buy Fallout 3. Support Bethesda, one of the few companies still creating compelling, lengthy experiences. You won't regret it.
If I was excited before, I am even more excited now.

I am really excited now it does sound great. I hear the Enclave is back which should be interesting. I am sure the story is great that is a strength of the series. I looked at Walmart today but they didn't have it yet. I will probably go to Best Buy or Target later in the week.

It is available at Steam too... like right now! Although, Europeans have to get it through some American (official European release is friday).

A lot of games make a big deal out of player choice, but few in recent memory offer so many intricate, meaningful ways of approaching any given situation. You fulfill or dash the spiritual hopes of an idyllic society, side with slavers or their slaves, and decide the fate of more than one city over the course of your postapocalyptic journey through the Washington, DC wasteland. Your actions have far-reaching consequences that affect not just the world around you but also the way you play, and it's this freedom that makes Fallout 3 worth playing--and replaying. It's deep and mesmerizing, and though not as staggeringly broad as the developer's previous games, it's more focused and vividly realized.

Played this game today. Spent roughly 3 hours with it. Most of it was just in the beginning phases but, wow. Its definitely a very Oblivion feeling game. Obviously because of the developers. Like an Oblivion 2: In the future.
Its not a bad thing either. Voice acting is grade A. Textures are great and the action is a lot of fun. Animations are...C quality. But if you remain in first person you won't notice the slipping feet or awkward actions.
The beginning is a lot of fun and is very immersive and its evident that you are part of this post apocalyptic world. If you start wandering about you will DIE. My brother and I spent the first hour trying to figure out where to go and it played out pretty realistically. A naive vault dweller with no notion of the dangers that lay in the wastes and with no experience in this harsh new world.
We picked a fight with a giant scorpion, which we watched earlier (from a safe distance) chase down and kill some poor human wanderer. Clearly armed with a pistol WE would be able to destroy this insect. Wrong. The game definitely has a sense of realism as the creature twice our size killed us fairly quickly and the tiny caliber did little to its shell. Even though we had ran into a house and up some stairs. It was quick to retreat and hide behind rocks out of range of our sniping pot shots. It was fun to watch it scamper from rock to rock avoiding our fire though.
End result Scorpion 2. Us 1.
We took off in a different direction on the 3rd run. Running into bandits who eagerly lobbed grenades before rushing in with knifes and at one point a flame thrower. In one instance we gunned down one of 2 thugs running toward us. The 2nd dropped her weapon and ran for cover behind a 3rd thug who was joining the fight. After we dispatched the 3rd thug she ran back to her first friend and knelt down at the corpse in mourning. After that More raiders came and we ran.
Shortly after escaping we found ourselves near death, out of ammo, water, and food, plus we were lost. When night time rolled around we found ourselves bumping blindly about trying to find our way and running in fear at every sound. The last of which were a series of foot steps that came from behind with a screech before killing us.
This was a lot more then I planned on writing but overall the game was a lot of fun. A young, and naive vault dweller's first bout into the waste lands left dying and lost. Eventually being stalked and killed by something in the dead of night.
We never did see what killed us either but it had a tail...

Eat that stuff they drop for fire resist and go melee them to death. Otherwise you may run out of ammo.
Ant nectar, buffout, jet, beer, and a ripper. Good times..

Judging from all the forums I frequent, this is probably the 2nd most prolific statement on ze internets at the moment.
(the most prolific, of course, being "OMG OBAMA WINS!!!11!1!!" :p)
Now for something amusing - 40 mines and 1 old man (consider it a kind of 'physics test' for Fallout 3 :lol - don't worry no spoilers :) ):

I guess I'll be holding out until the game gets cheaper.

I finally got it 2 days ago and I'm loving every minute of it. Haven't strayed too far from the first town yet (Megaton) and I'm just exploring around, killing raiders and selling what I can scavenge off them.
Does anybody happen to know the rate of cap regeneration for the various traders in the game? Is it on a daily (in-game daily) basis and if so, any idea how much/what percentage it might be? I've tried looking for it online but there's no mention of it. I know the other Bethesda RPG's (Morrowind in particular) had this sort of info on the wiki for it.
So far I've been playing the game in a pretty selfish manner. My main concern is the main quest, and I'm pretty much lying and stealing my way there. I've even killed one or two people who have rubbed me up the wrong way. It's a lot of fun and I'm certain I'll get weeks of enjoyment out of it.

I bought this on the half-price deal on Steam... been fun so far!
I love the tutorial/introduction. Great way of getting used to the games controls and features without the usual "PRESS BUTTAN X TO DO THIS" that some games hammer into you (I'm looking at you, Black and White, with your goddamn unskippable tutorial).
So far, I haven't wandered far outside of Megaton... mostly because every time I do, I seem to act as a magnet for vicious dogs and molerats and whatever else is looking to pick on a poor helpless vault martyr. (Actually, I am looking kind of like Roland the Gunslinger right now in a badass duster and cowboy hat :cool)
I wandered a little too far at one point and got absolutely mauled by a Super-mutant and a Centaur (I think that was their names, I was too busy running away to pay much attention). Something about having Galaxy News Radio on whilst wandering through the Wasteland makes it even more scary than wandering without.
Pity my laptop only meets the minimum specs necessary to run the game, 'cause I can only play for an hour or so before the damn thing starts to over-heat.

I picked this silly thing up and started playing not too long ago. Just got through "the Family" quest and... wanted to shoot them all the entire time but didn't. :|
I think next round I play this I'll end up being an evil bastard... right now I'm just kinda a snarky bastard that ends up helping people anyway after I ask them how much money they'll give me to do it.

^ I'm playing the same kind of way at the moment. I started out the Tutorial as 'the nice guy who wouldn't take any shit' ...but the more I play, the more I feel like there is no room for a nice guy in the Wasteland.
I have spent too much time playing Thief so I can't help wanting to spend all the time crouched, sneaking around, pick-pocketing and stealing. In fact, I think I just do it automatically now. Especially with metal plates or anything shiny, just in the hope that I can pawn it off to someone later :lol

Yeah, I just picked it up, so? :p
Thanks Em for making me addicted to it, I'm already on my second playthrough in a much more thorough and complete bastard fashion. The first time around I was a good guy and it just didn't feel right.

I loved falling into the back of the Black Talon Mercenaries camp by accident, and sniping every single person there with my hunting rifle. Then going underground and shooting the big boss as he slept.

I have just started playing this again and I'd just like to reiterate my hatred for fire ants.
Can we form some kind of Anti Fire Ant Coalition?

Best strategy against the fire ants (if there's more than one) is to shoot the antennae - let them fight each other, and becaquse they've got a semi-ranges attack it's easier for them to fight each other, hence easier for you.
I remember the first fire ant I fought. I never knew it was a fire ant so I let it get real close to use my rad scorpion tactic - run in, hit, run back, repeat. Then a few feet away from me - FIRE!!!!! I shit one and ran up a hill to snipe the bastard.

Fire ants do suck, yeah. About the only things I hate worse are deathclaws and Mr. Gutsy. The bumpkin locales out west are full of Mr. Gutsys that will dial in from downtown and melt your face with plasma weapons.
Fortunately I am by this time damn near unstoppable. Got Paladin Cross & Dogmeat on my six and I roll with enough weaponry for an entire platoon.
Peter McCoy

Once you know how to approach a situation (like anything really) you're fine. Go for a deathclaws legs to really slow it down, then leisurely take potshots at his head. Once you've crippled a deathclaws legs, they're easier than the larger mirelurk varieties in my experience.
General Dan
Oct 27th, 2009, 01:12:00 AM
That's true. The biggest problem on Deathclaws is their speed, so you want an edge on that.
