View Full Version : What's your worst irrational fear?

I can't stand being faced with a big blank window facing the outside when its night out. I have this fear that a big white face *shudder* will appear suddenly. If I'm looking out at the night and I think about that then I have to go somewhere else because I get so freaked out. ^_^;
You?

My most irrational fear is probably people being heavy-handed with balloons. It's not the squeaking noise or anything, just the fear of it exploding, and even though I know a balloon popping is harmless, it still freaks me out to no end. I've always believed that when I was little, a balloon exploded in my face and has since given me an irrational fear of them.

Horror movies. Or rather, anything that has a bit of suspense AND is accompanied by creepy music. I have to go hide and not come out until the scene is over.

Cockroaches. Big or small, doesn't matter, I see one of those suckers and I'll enter full-on hysteria for a good twenty minutes or so. I can't kill them either because the only thing worse than cockroaches, is cockroach crunch. >_<
Or doctors - I often have to be sedated upon entering a hospital because I am considered a "hostile patient". But this isn't irrational, really.

I freak out if any small flying things come near me. Our neighbours used to have a budgie that they let loose in their lounge; it used to swoop at me when I was tiny. Combined with the fact that I have difficulty focussing on things that are close to me; if pigeons or chickens start flapping towards me, or if bees, flies - even butterflies - get too close to my face, it really freaks me out. ^_^;
It's weird though: I'm perfectly fine with big winged critters like Owls, Hawks and such - I've even had those plucking food out of my hand as they go past, and it doesn't bother me. It's just the flapping/fluttering motion, or the unpredictable way in which insects dart about.

I'm the same way with balloons, Droo. Can't stand them near me.

I'm afraid of needles, mostly because I think that any cut will make me bleed to death. Also being abandoned/alone...there's lots more, but that would be an entire thread in and of itself. :(

I think moths are cute.
I am really putting forth great effort into liking spiders, but they do creep me out a bit.
Irrational fears though.. hmm, I'm not fond of closed spaces - especially when they are crowded. I was stuck in an elevator too once, but with a gaggle of nurses and doctors. >_< It was hot, and tense, and otherwise icky.
I used to have a clown thing, but I'm mostly over that.
And I'm only afraid of the dark if I'm alone.. <_<

Airplanes and bridges. I get hella nervous in cars as well. I guess these things because I have a lot of messed up dreams.
As for the whole balloon thing, yeah. I hate them. But it's probably broader than that, though. I hate anything that can make loud, sudden noises that scare the bejesus out of me. >_> Air shows as a kid were torture. And fireworks. >_<;;;;

Right now? I'm not sure, but for a long time I was afraid of a T-rex smashing it's head in through my bedroom window, snatching me from my bed, and dragging me outside into the yard to devour me. A result of watching Jurassic Park at too early of an age...

Being buried alive
Spiders - I will literally freak and run at the sight of even the smallest of them. Of course, I was bitten by a brown recluse in the leg and that landed me on crutches for 6 months. Yes ... 6 months from a spider bite.
Creepy crawlies in general. Bugs and I do not mix.
Being grabbed by the ankles by something under the bed or when walking down ''open'' stairs. You know the ones, where you can see right through them because they don't have the little back panel on them.

OH MY GOD I HAVE THIS SAME FEAR!
Sometimes I can't stand too close to my bed when the lights are off.
Of course when I was little I had this fear that the floor between my bed and the bathroom was covered with tiny witches (:lol) so I'd cower in bed and then run as fast as I could to the refuge of the bathroom when I couldn't hold it any more.

Why on earth would you be fearful of spiders? You are vastly bigger. You have shoes. Apply shoe to spider.
Snakes? You are bigger and faster. Run away or grab a stick and beat the ever loving crap out of said snake.
Crocodiles? Dont swim in freshwater lagoons in Australia. And you are also much faster.
Sharks? Dont swim in unprotected waters.
Drop Bears? Okay, that's a problem. Meat eating koalas are scary as.

Spider in shoe. TERRIFYING.
Almost as bad is putting a bare foot into a shoe while camping and feeling something crawling on your foot and finding out its an earwig or two. *shudder* true story. That was the same year a bug flew into my ear and got stuck. :x

I read somewhere that this is a primal fear from back in our monkey days. When we lived in trees or climbed up trees to escape from predators. Those dangers would generally come from below. That's why there's the childhood fear of stuff being "under the bed." Its the predator in the bushes below you, waiting to grab your feet and pull you down.

tot his day if the lights are out, and I need to get out of the bed in the dark I leap several feet away so the monster that lurks waiting to grab my ankles will be thwarted. <_<
Makes for fun on the hardwood floors in socks! XD
I know what you mean about the window thing too, Holly. I get that way with mirrors too. In fact, a lot of things creep me out it seems! :lol

Ah, ditto the mirror thing. Sometimes when I'm in the bathroom alone I start thinking "What if someone just appeared in the reflection with me" and then I freak out and I have to force myself to look in the mirror. Or, I avoid looking in the mirror, feel like a crazy person, and get out of there. :lol

Oct 30th, 2008, 09:38:44 AM
Yeah - I have the same fear about the dark windows, mirrors (especially in bathrooms - bathrooms in general scare me) and being grabbed by the ankles from under my bed. In my room at home, I'm quite sure there's a clown there, waiting for me to make a false move. I have a bunk bed, so I lean out a little perilously with my eyes closed to flip the light on if I need to get up during the night.
I'm at Uni right now, and the clown doesn't seem to have followed me.
My worst irrational fears are snakes, and the dark. For snakes, I have no reason to fear them as I have had no bad experiences with them. I'm quite content to watch a documentary or go and see them in a reptile house, but as soon as that protective pane of glass between me and it is removed, I get really frightened. As for the dark, again, I'm not sure why. It might have something to do with seeing Susan Hill's "The Woman In Black" a few years ago. When I get scared, I don't often run. I freeze to the spot and stupidly cry. Sometimes it's embarrassing ...
That's my contribution. But I'm working on it ^^

Crickets. I'm terrified of them.
Holy crap! We have a reptile store next to us, and all their crickets have gotten up into our ceiling! I don't find them scary (if they jump and scare me, that's a bti different). I always try to save them and throw them outside because I'm a huge dork.

I was about to say that I'm a big bad mountaineer who's risked his life climbing ice and rock in various countries and how I've jumped across crevices and pulled climbs in the dark and all that jazz.
I don't get scared. Which is pretty true. I cross the street with little care, don't even flinch at the smell of burning plastic on an airplane (true story), couldn't care about the bear 15 feet away as I sleep under the stars (also true), or the snake next to my boot (again, true), or any of that...
Then I remembered I do have one really, really annoying "fear" (if you want to call it that... it's more like anger): TICKS.
I hate ticks.
I hate ticks with a passion.
Ticks should be removed from this world.
They have no purpose other than to spread horrible, horrible diseases like lime and make your life go down the drain.
They're tiny, they dig into your flesh, and they eject their stomachs into your bloodstream.
Ticks.
They're like lawyers; but, far, far worse.
I wouldn't call it a fear. It's just something that I think about immediately when I get back from a day of romping in the forest. I check myself, shower, then check hotspots once or twice more later in the day.
Stupid ticks.

That's such a downer :( I'd rather go along with the thought that maybe in some past life I was roped around the ankles and dragged to my death. It just sounds far cooler than being a monkey and having a predator snatch me from under a bush. It also makes me feel like less of a big baby when I launch myself from the foot of the bed into the hallway just to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Dru, I foresee the following situation occurring next summer.
Peter, channeling Capt. "Howling Mad" Murdock, will hypnotize you, a la Sgt. Bosco "B.A." Baracus (http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0025283/), to get you onto the plane and to Atlanta to the Con.
It will be awesome. Jenny can help too, I picture her more as Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck. But she might be fulfilling the mastermind role of Hannibal. :D
