Phil Foglio is a weird cat, and Steve Jackson is pretty damn funny.
The Japanese are pretty adept at oceangoing stuff and they had better naval tech than the west did for a long time (or is it China? I can't remember).
Pencil me in for Ninjas but the real answer is Spetsnaz.

You're thinking of China. Japan's oceangoing capabilities were only concerned with making it to Korea, and even then half their ships sank. China sailed halfway around the world.

Depends on which time era your talking about. For the early years it would be the Chinese yes.
Ninjas would trump pirates, hands down. The pirates would still be asleep when the throwing stars laced with scorpion poision hit them from the sneaky and stealthy ninjas that flew aboard on large kites from the trade winds.
Now, Samurai versus Pirates makes things much more interesting. In that case, I think Pirates would triumph with their dirtier tactics.

Do you a deal then. I'll stay quiet and you lot that keeps beating zombies / pirates and ninjas into the ground stop bringing this internet garbage into real life so we who have had enough of it have a place to escape it? Like stop talk like a pirate day?
Honestly, its funny in small doses. Not on every bloody board and not in real life and not over and over and over again. Ever wonder why that panning stuff has disappeared? Because it's just not funny when it's been beaten into the ground.
So it's not being a misreble git - and I don't have a rally car at present anyway - it's expressing the valid opinion that this has been seriously overdone. And it has. Please stop, I actually prefer to be a lighthearted funny guy, not one about ready to throw a cat through the monitor. And Stig doesnt like being thrown. And the mnitor doesnt like being hit with something vastly heavier than a brick.
Come to think of it, is it even possible for a human to pick that cat up in the first place.....?

I think they're all better than Spetsnaz honestly. Don't get me wrong, Spetsnaz is full of hard, scary-looking dudes who know martial arts and have crazy spring-loaded knives, but I think that's the mythology at work. SAS just has a miles-long rap sheet of really effective combat engagements. They're also a feeder school for some of the best private military contractor firms in the world, for what that's worth.

Yeah, it's somewhat big. It only weighs about 15 or 16 pounds, but because it's solid weight, as opposed to "droopy" weight (i.e. I had a cat who was 15 lbs and really easy to hold), it feels like 50.
Holding it downward and upward, farely easy. Holding it to the side, yeah, good luck. Not a one-hander at all. Two-hands with a grunt.
Next step: To hang it on the wall and hope to gawd it doesn't fall on anything or anyone. Like i said... it's solid. If it hit something, it may come away with a scratch, but whatever it hits will come away with a dent, or worse. (I think i'll be keeping the point-cap on just for safety. It's somewhat sharp at the end. :uhoh

Also, no flintlock? Come on. You can get a functional one even in your repressive little banana republic state. That's where the fun is! Hell, you could probably stick to cap & ball and still find a cool reproduction at your local Cabelas or something. Plus, you get to shoot off big puffs of white smoke which is why black powder guns are fun.

Cavemen vs. Astronauts hinges on one very important question. Are they on earth or in space? In space astronauts win. On earth, cavemen. The astronauts would not be able to function for several days in the Earth's gravity, and have decreased muscle mass from their time spent being weightless. Lets not forget those bulky spacesuits. ;)
And the cavemen would be disoriented in zero-G and dead in the vacuum of outer space.

Ninjas would handily defeat pirates in most people's opinions, though the exception to this rule effected my vote: "Black Bart" Roberts. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartholomew_%22Black_Bart%22_Roberts)
I don't care what the circumstances (other than a drunk crew), but This pirate single-handedly makes it possible to wipe the floor with ninjas that were brave enough to try the seas. On land? Meh, Roberts'd be defeated, after they had to get the most elite ninjas in the land posing as weak farmers and such.
