It's almost that time again, folks...

Who's playing this year? ;)

I always say I will but I never do. I may just give it a go this time around. I'll brainstorm and see what ideas I can come up with. If I get a good'un I'll see if I can plow through 50,000 words.

The main problem I have had the last few years, aside from my laptop dying, has been that school work tended to get pretty heavy around November time... but since I'm graduated now, I think I might be able to give it a go :)

Any ideas what you might write about, Peter?

I came up with an interesting religious fantasy story about a guy who is granted tainted powers by a corrupt St. Peter. Heaven and Hell have an almighty clash with Earth and Mankind in the middle. The protagonist has this unholy strength which, when used, has different consequences that sort of favour Hell even though he's fighting for Heaven. I haven't thought much about it other than odd ideas floating around in my mind, plus a twist at the end which I think is quite cool.

Like I said, I'll brainstorm and jot ideas down. But the idea is to just write without stopping to edit, which is the best way to write IMHO. Editing as you go slows the process, causing you to second-guess and re-write and before you know it you've changed too much and lost track of the original thread. If I can get a good general backbone I can hang stuff on it as I go and be really creative.

What about you?

I do it every year, so, this year is no exception. Time to start brainstorming.

Dang it, last year may have been the best chance in my life to do it since I was out of school and hadn't found work yet, but there is no way I'm doing it while I'm in grad school.

Maybe a 10,000 word story...

Maybe, just maybe. I've still got a month and a half until this starts, so we'll see whether my life will allow for it or not.

I'm tempted; depends if my brain is still working after the script writing competition I'm entering. >_<

Uh...maybe? I can't begin to think what I'd write about, or where I'd find the time or motivation.

I'm probably going to put pen to paper (so to speak) on the fantasy idea that I've been mulling over for a while. The very brief blurb I wrote for myself is this:

"The use of magic has caused seemingly irreparable damage to the world. There is a threat now, however, which may only be defeated through the use of magic. How can the foe be stopped, if the only thing that can save the world might also destroy it?"

That is the main, over-arching theme I guess... combining fantasy/magic and almost environmental issues. Kind of like magic is a non-renewable energy source or fossil fuel.

I'm still struggling with my NaNoNoVel from last year :x I'm terrible.

And the only other NaNoNoVel I've tried ended miserably (except in it I came up with the Mer concept, which we're using in Myth, so hooray!)

I came up with an interesting magical theory for a fantasy setting in my 2nd year of my Imaginative Writing university course. It was influenced by Final Fantasy VII a bit, in that all living things generate a life force which condenses deep within the earth. The energy can be found in a crystallized, liquefied or gaseous form. All forms can be harvested but the crystals emit magical energy (radiation) which can be collected with arcane crystals and stored in a sealed vault contained within a sub-plane of reality. The stored energy can then be utilised by an wizard of the same house that created the vault.

Hmm, I may very well tweak this idea and include it in my novel. Give it a heaven/hell twist. Maybe there are two different energy types - that which is created by inherently good-natured beings, and that which is created by inherently evil beings.

Oooh, just come up with a good idea for the Garden of Eden - that's definitely going to feature in the story! Where's my notepad!

They relaunched stuff at the site, and I could log in, but was denied access to everything, and then my account didn't exist and then ....well, I signed up AGAIN. And am awaiting approval.

Wheeeee.|I

In any case, getting the gears of my brain running to cook up the fun (and insanity) for November.

EDIT: Okay, they had one of their big database servers succumb to disk failure on October 1st. In other news, my login issues were resolved. -shrug- Weird.

I'm in, though I don't know how long it'll be since I'm already behind on my schoolwork. I can definitely spell P-r-o-c-r-a-s-t-i-n-a-t-i-o-n.

Mine is actually a fairly boring premise compared to some other ones on here. Presently it has the working title of The Epiphany Collector. It's about a young man who gets into the habit of writing down what people were doing and thinking about when they had epiphanies so that he can understand how to have the "ultimate epiphany". A little blurb explains it a lot better than any sort of synopsis I can come up with:

Not good. Rather than try to do the whole NaNoWriMo thing I may use it as an excuse to make a proper start on something. It's certainly got me in the writing mood, but I'm in more of a slow, planning, contemplative mood than a blitzkrieg write-a-thon.

I managed 500 words the weekend. Plenty of ideas, just unable to commit them to the page. I think I'll slow down and be more deliberate with my writing this month. If I get enough done I'll crack on with it after the end of the month and produce something good as opposed to producing something for November just because it's NaNoWriMo.

I have to be the worst writer in the world. One who doesn't write.

Woohoo, go WriMo's, GO!

Peter, you fail. Tsk tsk. The point of this exercise is to WRITE, not to make something polished. If you spend all your time trying to polish it up before you write it, you'll never get anything on paper, which is your problem, yeah?

Bite the bullet and just do it! :whip
