View Full Version : I'll add something different to mine
Aurelias Kazaar

You know the drill:
Aurelias Kazaar
Taylor Millard
Cyrus Haman
Wargrave
The Black Man
But I want something else too. I'm curious about writing style on some of these characters, specifically Kazaar's. I know some people don't like the addition of colored text into his posts, but a part of that is because I see Kazaar's world as (literally) black and white. I'm curious what you guys think about that.

AURELIAS KAZAAR: Have to say, Im his biggest fan. This character has so much spirit to him. It is difficult to ride the ledge of good guy/bad guy and not be too cliche. He's a rebel, he's a killer, he's a princpled guy, but he's a gun for hire too. Very contradictory and complex, and totally entertaining. You pepper him with just the smallest amount of sensitivity to Estelle and in lesser portions to Adelaide, that hint at the man within, but then you do something typically bone-headed that makes the reader think they were seeing things. As for the color text, I dont mind it. The only thing to say is it can sometimes shift the focus slightly of what your saying, putting more emphasis on the colored word than is necessary simply by the visual. But, it is a thing you uniquely do, and so I like it for that reason alone. Obviously, I love writing the threads with Kazaar. He is one of the board must-have characters.
TAYLOR MILLARD: He is not my favorite of yours, simply, I think, because he is a military stuffed shirt. And this remark is a compliment because there is no comparison between Millard and Kazaar, or Haman or TBM. Millard is a man who stands alone.
HAMAN: Love this rapscallion little dude. He is a rascal of the most uninhibited and unapologetic kind. I think that is why Hera likes him so much. He is scum, and he does not hide it. You get exactly what you see with Cyrus Haman. Plus, he is as funny as hell.
THE BLACK MAN: Is a very cool customer. I like him immensely. He is just oblique enough to be believeable as a spy. Do more threads with him.

I've only read the stuff with Kazaar, but I like the angle. You've definitely cut yourself a path in pulp genre, and you've got a brash way of describing things that makes it a treat to read.

Geez, I don't really have opinions on any character other than Kazaar.
So, here it is -
Love him. Honestly, I read every single thread he is a part of because, well, he's written so well. I really wouldn't change a thing about him, and you've heard this from me already, bucko. More than once. ;)

Aurelias Kazaar - Estelle and Aurelias are a one-two punch. I really appreciate how these two characters who might be considered oil and water by some outsiders have managed to pull together an impressive partnership. Estelle is tougher than she looks, and although Kazaar is the one supposed to be training and protecting her, it seems like she's doing the same for him.
He's got a great duality going on with his shady past and his... shady present. Okay, so maybe it isn't such a duality. He gets away with a lot of stuff that lesser agents couldn't because he's just that good, and also because in a very real sense he just doesn't care. If he threatens to leave, he'd actually leave the Rebellion, and so he's forced his superiors to dance between reprimanding him and just being happy that he's on their side. ;)
You are so prolific with him and I wish I had more time so I could actually read all your threads. :( I enjoy that you and Hera are so comfortable with each other's characters that you can NPC each other in a roleplay... it helps you complete so many more than other people who get bogged down in the minutia of dialogue and movement.
Taylor Millard - He was probably your second most prolific character before the reset. I haven't read more than a post by him since then. I'm glad he's back, and i look forward to reading more from him!
Cyrus Haman
Wargrave
The Black Man - I haven't read much recently by any of these characters. I'm not sure what's going on with them!
But I want something else too. I'm curious about writing style on some of these characters, specifically Kazaar's. I'll be honest, I didn't get the inclusion of the colored text until today when I read this and then read part of "The Games Hutts Play". I can actually see the whole Sin City thing you have going on with the pops of color in the text, and I have to admit, I kind of like it! I love Kazaar's accent and mumbled words as well, and the way you write it not just in his dialogue. Its a great way of showing what your character is thinking without having to write: This is a great way to write, thought Kazaar.
:) You are really talented.

Aurelias is my favorite of yours, for many of the reasons already stated by others. Suffice to say, he is a fun character to read, and I find his 'style' (the coloured text and such) to be pretty neat. I'm excited for us to explore the history he has with Dasquian.
Millard - I really liked the Millard of pre-reset times, or at least what I got to see of him and his dual nature with Wargrave. The storyline you had going with sIlancy was really interesting too, him chasing her and trying to tame her. I don't think I have read anything of him post-reset. I think that it would be hard to top what you did with him... but if anyone can reinvent him in an interesting way, its you :)
One thing I will say overall is that when you create a character, you seem to really go all out in terms of bringing them to life. They each have their own unique personalities, quirks and histories that all seem to fit so naturally into place. I think it helps that you don't have a huge number of characters, so you seem pretty dedicated to creating these big, on-going stories for those you do have. It's nice :)
