Wednesday proved to be a very eventful day to say the least. Of course there was the normal waking up a little late, but I suppose that's to be expected. I saw my last day at my Mom's place as a rather easy experience, without surprises or any of the like. My little sister Ari and I went out riding, which was wonderful since I'd not been on a horse for at least almost two years (I ride with an Aussie rig Mark; always have, always will).

After returning the horses to the pasture, Ari and I went out to the high school to pick up the remainder of the food from the wedding that'd been stored there.

And on our way back!

On our left are alfafa pastures, and on our right are alfafa pastures. Both sides are lined with irrigation ditches along the road, but what should wobbles his way across the street but a fawn! I'm talking damn near newborn, more than likely born that morning or just the day before. Ari is driving, and she slows down as we both 'aaawwww' and 'what the heck is he out of hiding for?!". Something like this isn't normal since the mother would make sure that her baby stays put while she's off tending to her own affairs, but here this little guy was stumbling across the road.

Of course that meant that we had to stop and see what the heck was up. No doe in sight whatsoever, so Ari parks the car on the dirt shoulder as I climb out. The poor guy was so out of it, but that didn't stop him from bumbling his way through the sagebrush, through the irrigation ditch and on to the other side to lie down. He was so tired that he just plopped down to rest.

Now, the irrigation ditches were full of cool and refreshing water, and I was waist deep in the sagebrush, using them as handholds to keep from slipping into the water. Kind of odd, since I'm allergic to sage. Ugh.

Two seconds of thought was all it took for me to just take one step down into the water, then another. Standing up to my knees in running water, I reached out and picked the little guy up.

It was tricky getting back up, but with Ari's help I made it with fawn in arm, and we scrambled back into the car and sped home.

So, without further ado, I want to introduce you all to Smalls.

He was pretty exhausted after the car ride, and settled for my lap:

we thought it best to get him some water, and he seemed to appreciate it

after which of course we had to show off his fawn spots

To make sure he wasn't going into any sort of shock, I eased him up a few times to stand

... which he did very well

Ari went to get a cat collar for him so we could tie some bailing twine to and let him walk around

It was a little too big. But, what's over there?

Should we investigate?

We went out into the yard for a little bit

Someone needs kisses

Of course, after som romping around we went back up to the deck to see if he would drink some lamb's milk - which was the closest thing to deer milk that we could get. He took to it fairly well, and after some feeding he just chilled out in my lap

Of course Ari's cat Fearless had to say hello

He seemed to enjoy the relaxation

Unfortunately there is not a happy ending to this story; suffice to say that he is with Nox now, chillaxin' and doing whatever else it is that little ones do up in the big blue.

But, I'll leave you all with one last parting picture to remember Smalls by:

He was a really awesome little guy and while its sad that he didn't make it, I feel really blessed to have gotten the experience of helping to take care of him.

That's so precious. Very sweet and cute.

And darnit, I swear it must be the "passing of pets" week. 'Cause my oldest fishie, a tetra who I named Trooper (there are reasons for this name), finally flopped upside-down and floated to the top of the fish bowl. I'm back down to one fish again. Poor little remaining fishie, all alone.

I'm better with cats. >_<

Ah, man. Not a good week for our furry friends. :(

Even in something that might seem random, directionless and without an ultimate end purpose, some sense of completion came from it. Glad he felt comforted , loved and you felt the warmth of his company, before his passing.
