View Full Version : Oh, to understand the mind of a child... such a challenge sometimes...

Ummmm... so yeah, my 6-year-old was talking to my friend on the phone tonight while I was washing the dishes in the kitchen. This is nothing out of the ordinary - I mean, she's 6, and she's been able to be in a room by herself for a long time without getting any strange urges - but today it's different:

I walk into the room, and about the first thing that my eyes settle on is the huge gaping hole in the curtain right beside where she's sitting.

First thought: Maybe the screw at the back of the chair got tangled...?

Second thought: That hole is awfully even for an accidental tear...

Then she turns around in the chair to face me, still talking on the phone, and in the other hand she's holding the scissors. There's a big, goofy - and disconcertingly satisfied - smirk on her face.

Third thought: Ohh crap... O_o

According to her, she just cut a hole in it because she wanted to. It's a perfectly round hole about the size of a walnut. Curtains aren't supposed to have holes like that. I don't know why she thought she needed to do this. She's never done anything that made as little sense as this. It's scaring me.

Does anyone know if random wanton destructiveness is a particular phase that all 6-year-olds go through? I really hope it is....

Wow.. sounds like independence and impulse overtook her! :o My son has always been like that though, he's ten now, but yeah..lots of random..
'What on earth did you do that for?!' ..conversations over the years.. I'm going to have to say it's pretty normal, but I'm not very strict. :\

I think kids all do things were they test your limits, just to see what they can get away with. I know my baby cousin used to do it all the time, and she was only 3. Her mother was immensely if not ridiculously strict though. >_> I wouldn't worry too much about it unless she starts really acting up.

I wouldn't worry about it, though I would try to nip it in the bud immediately. :p there are only so many things you can do with scissors and some of them include cutting hair. ;)

^ yes, be glad she's an only child, because siblings LOVE playing hair-dresser :uhoh I'm sure I've done it to my younger sister too...

Your daughter seems like a smart young lady, so I'm sure she'll understand that cutting up things other than say, paper or whatever, is a no-no.

Oooooooooo, sounds like a good story. :D

Anywho, I don't think that it is that big a deal. I did worse when I was a kid, instead of scissors I used a swiss army knife.

Sounds pretty normal. Not anything you should be concerned about, kids just love to cut and break stuff from time to time. They don't mean anything bad by it, it's just interesting.
